1 | Wise Christian spending? | Lev 19:18 | justme | 140050
As a Christian US citizen, should we attempt to buy US made goods, where available, over goods made in other countries? How much do we consider that some goods made in some countries are made with basicly slave wages. Should we stop buying goods made from countries that are against Christianity? Please attempt to relate your answer with Scripture. justme |

2 | Wise Christian spending? | Lev 19:18 | MJH | 140051
Lev 19:18 ". . .you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD." I think this is the best verse that applies. They could be child laborers in sweat shops. OR they could be making a good living wage in their culture. Often companies actually bring economic renewal and help to area of the world by setting up shop. Not all companies are greedy money grubbers out to harm the little guy. I mention this because I have friends on a board of a non-profit mercy organization that tries to find companies that will set up in poor nations to help them. So by not buying you may be “loving your neighbor.” But then you may be “loving your neighbor” by buying the products. It’s not always so clear. Also you said, “. . .countries that are against Christianity.” I don’t think that applies, since you may be hurting the wrong people. If we do something against a country specifically, and not just a company or product, the best way would be for the United States to impose sanctions. MJH |

MJH: China is one of hundreds of countries I will mention. People earn 25 to 50 cents an hour! Would this not be one of the hundreds of slave labor countries, that WalMart uses to supply us with substandard products, and that have cost the USA over a million jobs so far. Do we not owe our fellow Americans workers the kindness to but American made goods when possible?y American made I include Canada, Mexico, and ever Central America. Any thoughts? justme |

Justme While 25 to 50 cents and hour may be beyond our belief if you only need 2-4 dollars a day to live then it isn't slave wages. I remember a time in this country a good income was 500 dollars a month. You could buy a car for 1500 and house for 10,000 now the wages are 3000 a month and a car costs 30,000 and houses 250,000. Personally I would rather be making the 500 and buying cars for 1500 then making 4000 and buying cars for 30,000. What a laborer is paid is not the key how much spendable income does he have after he pays for the necessities of life is the gauge. Here in the US we have allowed our cost to exceed our income by our willingness to pay the price. If we stopped paying the high prices things would come down but while the correction is taking place people would be out of jobs. Something no one wants. EdB |

EdB: Merry Christmas Ed! My dad told me of times he worked for very little a day back when....? However, I have never heard anyone recalling those days without telling how much they suffered as well. My first new car was a 64 Chevy and it cost 2,882.00. It lacked every safty satanard we have today! Compaired to the car we got this year about 4 times a much, and gets 33mpg I will take the things of today, thank you. Having been to a few thrid world countries, there are certian things that cost the same no matter where you live. For example tolet paper costs pretty much the same everywhere. No place on earth is 25 to 50 cents an hour a anything but slave wages. May I suggest that here in the USA we have so excepted Walmarts 10. dollar cheap shoes that come from China, and last maybe three months, over a 125 dollar pair of USA made genuine leather shoes that last five or more years and can be resoled! I believe if we continue to act unwisely by buying cheap foreign goods, eventually our wages will continue to go down to match those cheaper cost and poorer quailty goods we buy. There are very few skilled labor jobs get paid a high as they did say 15 years ago. Yet we are telling the X generation they should save up more and more for education and future retirement. We have a generation that sees most things as expendable, and to use until a bigger and better item comes along, be it cars, houses, or husbands and wives. Ed, if we as a country all stopped buying a certian item we wanted to come down in price, that would have the very opposite results, costs would increase because quanity reduces production costs. Scriptually I would say a workman is worthy of his wages. As Christians we need to bring attention to the countries like China that treat the labor so much like slaves. Justme: I agree with you: "there are certain things that cost the same no matter where you live." It is a myth that elsewhere in the world food and other goods are generally cheaper than they are in the USA. For example, in 1972 a gallon of gas in western Europe cost two dollars and fifty cents (if I remember correctly). At that time gas in the USA was 50 cents a gallon (again, if I remember correctly). People in third-world nations who get by on 25 to 50 cents an hour are living below a standard that would've been unacceptable here 100 years ago. They may "live" on those wages, but then the question is: define "live". And by the way, my first new car was a 1969 Chevrolet that cost 2,575 dollars. Grace to you, Kalos |
