1 | Years of Silence? | Mal 4:6 | Makarios | 44831 | ||
Greetings Mommapbs! "The Time Between the Testaments" "The time between the Testaments was one of ferment and change - a time of the realignment of traditional power blocs and the passing of a Near Eastern cultural tradition that had been dominant for almost 3,000 years. In Biblical history, the approximately 400 years that separate the time of Nehemiah from the birth of Christ are known as the intertestamental period (c. 432-5 B.C.). Sometimes called the "silent" years, they were anything but silent. The events, literature and social forces of these years would shape the world of the NT." Thanks for that insight Makarios! I am interested in the possible comparison between the time prior to the First Advent and the Second Advent of Jesus Christ. In the first, the "silence" of God (and the ignorace of Israel?) with His people can be contrasted with the prolific spread of the Gospel (and the ignorance of Israel!)in these last 400 years! It was about 400 years ago when a small group of Christians sought to worship God as HE wanted rather than follow the prescribed pattern as set forth by the "state" religious leaders. So they left their homeland and ventured into the New World. To them, Jesus was worth it all, and many paid for their desire to honor Him with their very lives. Living in the USA, many of us are ignorarnt of our many brothers and sisters across this globe who are still choosing to do the same, as these early "pilgrims" did, today! Anything to add to my comparison? Blessings, Mommapbs |

Greetings Mommapbs! I know that the events immediately preceeding Samuel was the closure of a time that had experienced a 'silence' or rarity when it came to visions and prophecy (1 Sam. 3:1). But beyond that, I can only think of the time of the Babylonian exile that there was such a 'silence' from God. While it is true that no inspired prophet arose during these 400 years (between the testaments), much happened during this time. Alexander the Great conquered the Persian Empire and helped to bring the Greek culture and influence to Palestine. It is believed that Alexander dealt kindly with the Jews. After a series of generals ruled in Alexander's stead, the Septuagint was written, which helped revolutionize "Bible" translation up to that point. Blessings to you, Makarios |

Thanks Makarios. It was interesting to me that you refered to the three empires what I have heard symbolized in Rev. 13:2 as The Babylonians (Lion) The Greeks (Leopard) and the Persians (Bear). Indeed, God is not silent! He who has an ear, let him listen! Watching and waiting (and listening!)with you! Mommapbs PS:Can we compare this inter-testament time period with Israel today? A nation occupied and oppressed vs a true Nation State (occupied by Palestinians and still oppressed by world opinion!) A persecuted nation vs a persecuted "people." worship of God on their terms (see the accounts of the kings where the high places were allowed to remain and also the worship of the Samaritains) vs a desire to return to worshipping God as HE prescribed as evidenced by the Temple Insitute today looking for Messiah as promised vs still looking for Messiah as expected I'm still working on this. . . do you have any observations to suggest? |
