NIV translation says:"I hate divorce" says the Lord God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himself with violence as well as with his garment" How do we reconcile this NIV version with NASB and AMP versions you have? What exactly does this verse mean? Does this permit women to divorce abusive husbands? | ||||||

Hi Sandya, I believe that the covenant of marriage and the covenant that God makes with us are covenants of life and peace. For instance the covenant spoken of in Malachi 2:5. "My covenant with him was one of life and peace..." We all have one Father for one God created us. But we "deal treacherously" each against his brother, verse10, and against his wife, verse14. Yet if we who have a remnant of the Spirit, who have access in one Spirit to the Father as Ephesians 2:18 states it; we who are seeking to be built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit; we, being of God's household (brothers/wifes) need to grow into a holy temple in the Lord for he preached peace to us. The marriage should be one of life and peace. God is the One who is seeking a godly offspring. He is seeking men and women who live in life and peace. We should listen to the spirit and instruction given to us and walk with Him in peace and uprightness per Malachi 2:6. This is the instruction to everyone, brothers/sisters, husbands/wives. But in relation to a marriage with an abusive husband, we should not say that he is doing good in the sight of the Lord, and that He delights in them. We serve a just God and wrongdoing should be dealt with appropriately. Husbands who do physical damage should be charged with crimes. Wives who are in danger should leave their husbands, using common sense and again listening to the spirit given them. The covenant should be one of life and peace. That's the way I see it. Welcome to the forum. I trust that you will find help and enjoyment here. From the heart, Ray |
