1 | Does God choose us? | Jon 2:9 | DocTrinsograce | 193416 | ||
Hi, AMALBP... God has, indeed, graciously chosen some men to be saved, although none of the descendants of Adam deserve such mercy. He is our sovereign God, and He is entirely righteous in doing as He pleases with His creation. In Him, Doc "After giving a brief survey of these doctrines of sovereign grace, I asked for questions from the class. One lady, in particular, was quite troubled. She said, 'This is the most awful thing I've ever heard! You make it sound as if God is intentionally turning away men and women who would be saved, receiving only the elect.' I answered her in this vein: 'You misunderstand the situation. You're visualizing that God is standing at the door of heaven, and men are thronging to get in the door, and God is saying to various ones, 'Yes, you may come, but not you, and you, but not you, etc.' The situation is hardly this. Rather, God stands at the door of heaven with His arms outstretched, inviting all to come. Yet all men without exception are running in the opposite direction towards hell as hard as they can go. So God, in election, graciously reaches out and stops this one, and that one, and this one over here, and that one over there, and effectually draws them to Himself by changing their hearts, making them willing to come. Election keeps no one out of heaven who would otherwise have been there, but it keeps a whole multitude of sinners out of hell who otherwise would have been there. Were it not for election, heaven would be an empty place, and hell would be bursting at the seams. That kind of response, grounded as I believe that it is in Scriptural truth, does put a different complexion on things, doesn't it? If you perish in hell, blame yourself, as it is entirely your fault. But if you should make it to heaven, credit God, for that is entirely His work! To Him alone belong all praise and glory, for salvation is all of grace, from start to finish." --Mark Webb |

I would like to make a comment on a portion of your Mark Webb quote. Webb stated: "If you perish in hell, blame yourself, as it is entirely your fault. But if you should make it to heaven, credit God, for that is entirely His work!" So let me see if I understand If you are saved, it's entirely God's doing, and not to your credit at all. If you are damned, it's entirely your own fault, and not God's fault at all (even though God controls everything). |

Dear New Creature, I think you paraphrased Webb correctly. You wrote, "If you are saved, it's entirely God's doing, and not to your credit at all." Yes, as taught by the Scriptures, redemption is entirely a work of God (Psalm 68:20; Ephesians 2:5; Galatians 4:3-7; Hebrews 12:2a; 13:20-25). Redemption is a matter of grace. You wrote, "If you are damned, it's entirely your own fault, and not God's fault at all..." Yes, that's correct. As the Scripture teaches, sin always earns death (Isaiah 3:11; Ezekiel 18:20; Romans 6:23; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; James 1:15). Damnation is a matter of merit. You wrote, "(even though God controls everything)." Yes, the Scriptures teach that God is sovereign (Psalm 115:3; 135:6; Job 23:13; Daniel 4:35; Ephesians 1:11). As Creator, God is free to do as He pleases... and He does... God does as He pleases, exactly as He pleases, and only as He pleases. If you would like to discuss the doctrines of grace in a more particular fashion, I'd urge you to write to my email address. Sometimes the valuable exercise of polemic exchange is better served in a more personal venue. I deem that that is the case here. Thank you for your questions. In Him, Doc |

Doc, It's so good to have you back up and running. If I haven't told you, I've learned so very much from you. You have been a true friend and mentor to me my brother. I pray this finds you seeing more clearly. Keep pitching bro and we'll keep catching. In Him, lionheart |
