1 | Exodus 33:11 vs. Ex. 33:1-22? | Ex 33:23 | Makarios | 95532
Ray, 1 Corinthians 15:45-49 in the NKJV reads, "And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man." [NKJV] Now the NASB is a bit different.. "So also it is written, "The first MAN, Adam, BECAME A LIVING SOUL." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural; then the spiritual. The first man is from the earth, earthy; the second man is from heaven. As is the earthly, so also are those who are earthy; and as is the heavenly, so also are those who are heavenly. Just as we have borne the image of the earthy, we will also bear the image of the heavenly." [NASB] Now, without even looking at the punctuation, there are differences betwen the NASB and NKJV in this verse! :-) As we have found to be true before, the NKJV will ALWAYS be more "fuller" than the NASB in text, and will always exhibit more incidence of capitalization of Diety than will the NASB. Therefore, I propose that we utilize the NKJV text over that of the NASB text for our study.. If were being "Deity-sensitive" in 1 Cor. 15:45-49, I would say that it should be "amplified" as follows: "And so it is written, "The first man Adam (capitalizing Adam here, since it is a proper noun) became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving Spirit (capitalizing Spirit, since this is a reference to Jesus). However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. (Not speaking of Deity directly in that sentence.) The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. (no changes) As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. (no changes) And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man. (no changes) That is my proposal to you, anyway.. What do you think? :-) Blessings to you, Makarios |

2 | Exodus 33:11 vs. Ex. 33:1-22? | Ex 33:23 | Ray | 95616
Hi Makarios, It is good to talk to you about these things because we both love the NASB and NKJ. The change that you made in your interpretation of the passage is that you determined that Spirit should be capitalized in verse 5. But I have to go with the versions before us and not make that change. I believe that in comparing 1 Corinthians 15:45 with Genesis 2:7 we can see enough difference between a man, Adam, who became a living being and the Man (the last Adam) who became a life-giving spirit. God is Spirit and the idea of "becoming", even though it is not in the Greek but inferred in context, would not be appropriate to my mind. So I'll leave it in the lower case for 1 Cor 15:45. I call to mind John 6:63, "It is the Spirit who gives life." In my personal copy I have penciled in "It is the spirit [sic] who gives life." 1 Corinthians 15:45, "The last **Adam became a life-giving spirit." John 6:63, "It is the spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that **I have spoken to you are spirit and are life." That is my interpretation. It makes for more consistency in the choices. It gives us the idea that the words, the spirit, of the last Adam continues to give life. I call to mind John 3:6 where I have penciled in another lower case "spirit". John 3:6, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the *spirit is spirit." Those are my proposals to you. What do you think? From the heart, Ray |

That sounds really good Ray! I understand your reasoning for using the lower-case "spirit" in verse 45.. I like it, and for whatever its worth, it passes my 'test of approval'... :-) Blessings to you, Makarios |
