1 | Abortion for medical reason ??????? | Ex 20:14 | Witp | 32582
My wife and I are faced with a decision that is tearing at our very being. God has blessed us with three wonderful, healthy kids who we love dearly. My wife developed some medical complications and has been watched closely by our GP and her gynaecologist. After collapsing one morning and being unconscious for a few minutes, she was given a blood transfusion to increase her iron and hemoglobin count. This has not helped. She has been advised by the gynaecologist to have a special IUD inserted. This IUD would prevent the heavy blood loss she currently experiences during menstruation. The IUD was to be inserted in February 2002. We have just found out that she is 3 weeks pregnant. I am concerned about her health and cannot loose her. Is abortion wrong for us? We have been advised by the gynecologist that because of her age and her medical condition, she will develop complications. The unborn child could be at risk as well. WHAT DO WE DO. Is the Lord testing our Faith? |

2 | Abortion for medical reason ??????? | Ex 20:14 | Listener | 32595
I can only imagine how you must feel. Please accept my sympathy and good will toward you and your family. I have very little medical knowledge but I feel compelled to share what I have learned through experience: 1) Men, including doctors and clergy don't know everything. Even when they act as if they are certain, they are sometimes wrong. We can only rely on God and His word. 2) Men, including doctors and clergy have a strong tendency to act in their own self interest. For doctors this means minimizing the possibilities of lawsuits and complications while maximizing profits. This is especially true if you have good insurance. For you, this means you must realize this bias in their advice, and make every effort to give priority to your family over yourself, as I trust you are now doing. 3) Get a second and a third opinion. This may clear things up immeasurably. When you ask the next doctor, try not to bias him/her with the previous doctor's recommendations. Proverbs 19:21 ¶There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. May God bless, comfort, and heal your wife. |

3 | Abortion for medical reason ??????? | Ex 20:14 | charis | 32632
Dear Listener, Greetings in the name of Jesus! I can only infer from your post that your experiences lead you to lump doctors and clergy together. I pray that I am wrong. "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you." Hebrews 13:17 NASB. My friend, I detect a distrust toward God's servants that is not right. Indeed, we must all wait upon God, and read His Word. But God often gives His counsel through His chosen shepherds. I feel sorry for you if you have not experienced this blessing. Peace and joy in Christ Jesus, charis |

4 | How can I submit to fallable clergy? | Ex 20:14 | Listener | 32716
Charis, Thank you for your biblical and straightforward response. You are correct in that I tend not to have faith in men/women of any stripe - whether they be doctors, clergy or anything else. Your biblical reference pinpointed this problem. As a thinking person, though, I am not sure how to overcome this. My observation, personally and from history, is that clergy are just as prone to error and self-will as the rest of us. Must I ignore history and personal observation? If not, how can I, in good faith, "Obey your leaders and submit to them"? Even Paul commended his listeners when they compared what he said with the scriptures, to see if they lined up (Acts 17:11). Jesus directed us to be as wise as serpents yet as harmless as doves (Matthew 10:16). How can we balance obedience and submission with discernment and wisdom? Obviously clergy who incite violence at abortion clinics should not be followed, and there are many other examples, both contemporary and historical. How is this reconciled with submission and obedience? If I say that I will submit and obey only in as much as what they say lines up with the Bible, then there is always room for contention on minor points of doctrine and practice. If I say I will submit and obey even in contradiction to the Bible, as long as the issue is minor - then how can I be sure what is minor in the Lord's eyes? The above paragraph is an attempt to clarify my dilemna in hopes of a usefull response and subsequent solution. I am confident that with His blessing, through the written word, the indwelling Holy Spirit, and brethren who are vessels of His blessing, this attitude can be changed to one which pleases Him. Thanks, Listener |

5 | How can I submit to fallable clergy? | Ex 20:14 | charis | 32718
Dear Listener, Greetings in the name of Jesus! My friend, your honesty is disarming! I, too, have much experience with clergy and professional ministers that are unworthy of trust. As a 'fellow' minister (but because I am a 'lay' pastor, I am not *completely* accepted into the clique! :-)), I sometimes see a side of the clergy that is hidden from the 'laity.' I am ashamed for those that do not know how to be ashamed. But, nonetheless, the Word of God requires us all to honor and obey those in spiritual authority. As Christians, this respect must be without reservation or qualification. So, God's people have a certain abount of responsibility to find God's chosen leaders. The problem is not just a lack of shepherd-like shepherds. There is also a dearth of sheep-like sheep! All I can say, Listener, is that you MUST search (by the leading of the Holy Spirit) until you find a pastor who will shepherd you. God requires it. Soulish or intellectual satisfaction are not enough. Convenience or tradition are not good enough for God's people. Good music, good school or good programs will not feed you what you really need. The local church must be a *family* of God. Any good family needs a pillar, chosen (called) by the Lord. Bless you in this quest! In Christ Jesus, charis |
