1 | How do I honor God and my parents? | Ex 20:12 | Sweetest Mami | 56358
Ok. First of all, thank you for the response. I am non-denominational and my parents are Catholic. I don't beleive in reverencing Mary and a lot of other "religious" things that they practice and that I used to practice. I know that I need to sit down and talk to them, but my father is very adamant about Catholicism being the only "religion". They do not yet understand that I am seeking a relationship with God and not a religion. They think that I'm in a cult because of how I refuse to back down off of my beliefs. I realize that to adequately answer the question, you'd need a lot more background than I can give you in 2,000 words or less. I don't really know what else to tell you. Basically, my parents are trying to tell me what church I can and cannot attend, and I don't think that at this age, they should be able to do that. I need to know whether disagreeing with them in that respect and still doing my own thing is dishonarable. I am not bashing the Catholic church, but I do not agree with the doctrine of the church. Thank you.
2 | How do I honor God and my parents? | Ex 20:12 | Searcher56 | 56373
Sweetest Mami greetings and welcome to the forum, Hank has given great advice. I believe we never should stop honoring our parents, even when we are old ... I'm 50 and I still honor them. My wife grew up Catholic and has left, when she became a Christian. Her family accepts her choice, so it is easier for us. It is tough when someone doesn't want to listen to an alternative in their beliefs. Who would your father listen to? Would someone older, who has found the Lord, after years as a Catholic work? If you know that, ask a pastor of a local church if they know anyone to fit that need. Meanwhile, live for Him, so they see the Lord in you. Share what He is doing in you and for you and the differnece He is making. I'd say it is okay to go to their church ... but, you don't (shouldn't) say the "Hail, Mary"'s. We go to the Catholic church when we visit. I don't know the routine, yet. Hope this helps, Searcher |

3 | How do I honor God and my parents? | Ex 20:12 | Sweetest Mami | 56432
Well, Searcher. My dad is hostile to every other type of religion. And to him, most churches that are seeking more relationship with God (not through a ritualistic worship) are cults, so that is where the problems arise. I know that I am only 19 and don't have as much wisdom as someone who has been walking with the Lord and living longer than I have. My parents would rather have me give them lip service and lie than to attend the church(es) that I attend. If I were to go to church with them here, they would not be satisfied until I became Catholic again. I will now, and am not going to bind myself to that kind of tradition again. I know that trials come in my Christian journey and if my dad has to be the thorn in my side, His grace is still suffecient. Thank you.
