1 | How do I honor God and my parents? | Ex 20:12 | Sweetest Mami | 56358
Ok. First of all, thank you for the response. I am non-denominational and my parents are Catholic. I don't beleive in reverencing Mary and a lot of other "religious" things that they practice and that I used to practice. I know that I need to sit down and talk to them, but my father is very adamant about Catholicism being the only "religion". They do not yet understand that I am seeking a relationship with God and not a religion. They think that I'm in a cult because of how I refuse to back down off of my beliefs. I realize that to adequately answer the question, you'd need a lot more background than I can give you in 2,000 words or less. I don't really know what else to tell you. Basically, my parents are trying to tell me what church I can and cannot attend, and I don't think that at this age, they should be able to do that. I need to know whether disagreeing with them in that respect and still doing my own thing is dishonarable. I am not bashing the Catholic church, but I do not agree with the doctrine of the church. Thank you.
2 | How do I honor God and my parents? | Ex 20:12 | Hank | 56365
Thanks for your response, Sweetest Mami. OK, you're 18 now, and you have honest convictions concerning your faith which are in conflict with your parents' convictions, right? So let's go back to square one, my first suggestion. Have that honest, forthright heart-to-heart talk with your parents. Let them know that you still love and honor them and are not trying to be openly rebellious or belligerent with them, but that you have, and have every right to have, your own convictions concerning your own personal faith and so, for that matter, do your parents. There is no problem that cannot be resolved with the help of Almighty God. And, of utmost importance, pray and keep on praying for guidance and wisdom to help you deal with the situation. You and your parents will be in my prayers and I wish you every success in resolving this difficulty. --Hank
