1 | I chose Israel and lifted up My hand? | Ezek 20:5 | Ray | 141569
I have been studying the differences between the NASB and the NKJ for chapter 20 of Ezekiel. Ezekiel 20:5 has the first occurance of a difference in translation. The verse has the first and second occurances of the seven things that God "swore to" in chapter 20. How important is it to know that God lifted up His hand? What verses come to your mind in regard to His swearing? From the heart, Ray |

2 | I chose Israel and lifted up My hand? | Ezek 20:5 | greentwiga | 141575
Young's literal 5 and thou hast said unto them: Thus said the Lord Jehovah: In the day of My fixing on Israel, I lift up My hand, To the seed of the house of Jacob, And am known to them in the land of Egypt, And I lift up My hand to them, Saying, I [am] Jehovah your God. American standard 1901 5 and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: In the day when I chose Israel, and sware unto the seed of the house of Jacob, and made myself known unto them in the land of Egypt, when I sware unto them, saying, I am Jehovah your God; I looked at the two most literal translations I know. As you can see, the literal is to lift up the hand. This is equated with swearing an oath. I guess we might shake hands on an agreement or sign a contract. God is an Oath keeping God. I studied the word evil. it literally means useless because it is broken. It seems to most commonly be used of oath breaking or covenant breaking. Therefore, it is not important to me whether he physically lifts his hand or not. The oaths he swears (Noah, Abraham, Moses, and the new covenant come to mind and are important. See esp Heb 6:13-20, Gen 22:17. Deut 32:40, Ezra 10:19, Lam 5:6, Ezek 17:18 use hands in a covenant or contract context. greentwiga |

Hi greentwiga, Thank you for your work and study here. I appreciate the Scripture references and the idea of our lifting our hand as in a pledge of faithfulness, or in submitting to someone, or pledging allegiance. The Hebrews 6:13 reference was the one that came to my mind right away when I was looking at Ezekiel 20:5. God swore by Himself, for there was no one greater. I think of our being sworn in at a trial in the U.S. and how we put one hand on the Bible and raise our hand. The Word swore by Himself. I like a literal translation of Ezekiel 20:5 so I have penciled in "lifted up My hand" throughout the chapter for the NASB copy; thus going with the marginal note for that verse, which agrees with the NKJ. 1) The next difference in the NASB and NKJ that I have noticed is represented by verse 8. NASB, "Then I resolved [Marginal note, Lit., said] to pour out My wrath on them, to accomplish My anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt." NKJ, "...Then I said, 'I will pour out My fury on them and fulfill My anger against them..." Which version would you go with for verses 8, 13, and 21; those having the "I resolved to" of the NASB.
