1 | How to ask for things we don't know | Jer 33:3 | Hecameforu | 33623
How are we to find out these great and mighty things? How do you seek out something you don't know about? Is there a special way to Call unto God. Is it Prayer? Is it Praying in other Tongues that the mysteries are revealed to us. Romans 8:26 "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered". Romans 12:2 "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God". 1 Cor 14:4 states "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church". It's the frist part of this verse that I'm talking about. Is this the way the Lord shows us those Great and mighty things? John 16:13 states "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come". 1 Cor 14:2 "For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries". And lastly, knowing that Paul wrote a lot of the New Testament, he says in 1 Corinthians 14:18: "I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all". Is it safe to say that a lot of his wisdom came from speaking with tongues? He also had so much more to say but in 1 Cor 3:2 Paul writes, "I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able". So the renewing of our Mind, the great and mighty things to be shown or told to us, the guiding into all truth by the Spirit....is praying in other tongues the way to receive this? I am in now way thinking that anything can take the place of studying the Word. God Bless, Barry |

Barry, An interesting question and one that I have personally wondered about as well. How do we know when God is speaking to us? How do we know His will? For me, I find the answers in one of three places. His word first and foremost. I am continuously amazed how my morning bible studies answer questions I had not even known I had!!! Has that happened to you? Sitting there reading perhaps in Luke and suddenly something (Holy Spirit) taps you on the shoulder and says, "See? This is what I meant!" As our Lord said in John 16 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. Trust Him! The second place I find answers is in church. These answers MUST be tested using the word. 1 Thessalonians 5 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. 22 Avoid every kind of evil. The third and final place is from the counsel of Godly men! Proverbs 27 17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. I do not believe that ANY wisdom comes from speaking in tongues. I have attended a Pentecostal (sp?) in my youth. A number of people "spoke in tongues" or claimed to. I felt VERY uncomfortable in that church. I believe that was the still small voice of God telling me I was in the wrong place! Also not all of us are called to do great and mighty things. That path can be the path of pride. So be careful and trust Him in everything you do. In Him Clay |

3 | How to ask for things we don't know | Jer 33:3 | Hecameforu | 33657
Clay, Thank you for your response. I too have had things revealed to me while I've read the word. I always pray before I read and as I said at the end of my previous post, nothing takes the place of reading the word. But then, Paul didn't have any new testament scripture to read did he? Pray, Pray is what he did I believe. I was not speaking of praying in other tongues in church but in private, for self edification(1 cor 14:4) alone with the Lord. Let me put it this way. Paul wrote most of the New Testament so, 1.He seemed to have more direct detailed Revelation knowledge than anyone else in that day and age. 2. He prayed in tongues more than anyone else. 1Cor 14:8 Is that a coincidence? I don't believe there are any coincidences when it comes to our Lord. It just makes sense that the more he prayed in tongues, the more knowledge was revealed to him through the Holy Spirit who only speaks what Jesus tells it to say. John 16:13 God Bless Barry |

Barry, the Scripture reference you gave as 1 Cor.14:8 was I'm quite sure meant to be 14:18. Paul did not say he prayed in tongues but spoke in tongues. Paul's chief discourse in this chapter concerns "a tongue" -- the singular, indicating that it refers to the false gibberish of the counterfeit, pagan ecstatic speech. In verse 18, he uses the plural "tongues" and it refers not to the previously-discussed babble but to intelligible speech, real human languages. --Hank

Hello Hank, Thanks for your input. You are correct, thank you. It was 1 cor 14:18 I was referring to. You said: "Paul's chief discourse in this chapter concerns "a tongue" -- the singular, indicating that it refers to the false gibberish of the counterfeit, pagan ecstatic speech". I'm not sure how you can say that it's false gibberish when Paul clearly says that when you speak in an unkown tongue, you speak to God. He uses the plural "tongues" because he had spoken in an unknown tongue many times before. My impression is that "speaking in unknown tongues" is the same as praying in tongues, out loud, by yourself. What did the Lord mean in Mark 16:17? "These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues" Tongue(s) from the greek "glossa"--- a language (specially, one naturally unacquired) Tongue(s) for 1. Personal edifacation 1 cor 14:4 2. Interpretation 1 cor 14:5 3. deep intercessional groanings Romans 8:26 4. sign to an unbeliever 1 cor 14:22 The 4th took place on the day of Pentecost. Acts 2:4-11 Love in Christ Barry |
