Hi Azure, Here is some interesting information on Jeremiah 31:22 From: (Bible Knowledge Commentary) 31:21-22. God called on the captives to set up road signs and guideposts as they traveled to Babylon and to remember the road they would take. They would need this information during His promised restoration so they could return to their towns. This time of promised restoration will be so remarkable that it will be as if God will create a new thing on earth. That new event is described proverbially by the clause, a woman will surround a man. This is probably the most difficult verse to understand in the Book of Jeremiah. One possible idea is that a woman will seek, or court, a man (NIV marg.). In that culture a woman would not normally court a man, so this would indicate something unusual. The woman here is Israel (v. 21). She had been unfaithful, but in the future she will finally seek out her God and ask to be united with Him. That might be a good source for your collection of study aids, I know it helps me, CDBJ |

Azure, the Preceptaustin.org website gives information on the inductive study approach. It also explains why this method is beneficial before going to commentaries. It also gives information on the interpretive approaches individual commentators use. This helps to understand their approach. Hope this helps. | ||||||

Shalom sister Azure, I haven't read the complete thread so I may be just repeating someone else, or I may not have your question understood completely. But I think one of your questions was about the word "compass"ing a woman from Jer. 31:22. I don't know if this will help or not but I use the Complete Jewish Bible which uses the Jewish English translation of the Old Testament, so here is how it reads from that version: Jer. 31:21 Set up road signs, erect guideposts, pay attention the to highway, the path on which you traveled. Come back, virgin Isra'el, come back to these cities of yours! Jer. 31:22 How long will you hesitate you unruly daughter? For Adonai has created something new on earth: a woman with the strengths of a man. Jer. 31:23 Here is what Adonai Tzva'ot, the God of Isra'el, says: "This expression will be used again in the land of Y'hudah and its cities after I have returned their exiles: 'May Adonai bless you, home of justice, holy mountain!' Sounds like Zion is being spoken about. If I got lost in the thought of the thread, just ignore me :-) Cheri |
