"A woman will encompass a man" - this is the new thing that God has created. What does this mean?

Mommapbs, You picka tough passage. Every Bible I own has a slightly different translation, so that eventually all the possiblities expressed in the Amplified translation are express. Hank's post also covers most of the options. One of my Bibles, The Jerusalem Bible translates the verse as: "For Yaweh is creating something new on earth: the Woman sets out to find her husband again." It then crossreferences to Hosea 2:18-19. But more interesting is the footnote: "The Hebrew verb translated here as "sets out to find again", means "to surround", "to turn (dance?) round something", "to go looking for". The text expresses the resumption of the loving relationship between Israel and her husband Yaweh. cf Hosea 1:2f; Isaiah 54:5-8; Ezek 16:59-60. The Vulgate has accentuated the messianic scope of the text by translating "the woman will surround the man", suggesting the virginal conception of Christ." The last suggestion follows the line of the term "the woman" in Genesis 3:15. This verse is a good example of a difficult and "ambiguous" text as one commentary described the Hebrew. Emmaus |

3 | Who is the "woman" who is the "man"? | Jer 31:22 | Mommapbs | 86831
Greetings Emmaus - I have quoted you in one of my responses today - how I value your input. Thank you for sharing! Indeed there are things that I ponder and think about that cause me angst at times. It seems I can get just so far in comprehending and then it becomes "too lofty" and out of reach - I am overwhelmed. Yet God in His time will often reveal the answers to the questions I have had over the years. It never ceases to amaze me when this happens! Your suggestion of dance is intriguing to me. "You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness," Ps 30:11 "Again I will build you and you will be rebuilt, O virgin of Israel! Again you will take up your tambourines, And go forth to the dances of the merrymakers." Jer 31:4 "Then the virgin will rejoice in the dance, And the young men and the old, together, For I will turn their mourning into joy And will comfort them and give them joy for their sorrow." Jer 31:13 At first, I thought of the conception of Jesus but as Hank has pointed out, the word for woman is not virgin. (I think I need a Hebrew text - then I wouldn't have to ask some of these questions!) To me, this is a picture of the final restoration of Israel in the earthly Kingdom of the Lord. Now one last final thought: if the Lord is creating this new thing, which I believe refers to the remnant of Israel - could we say that HE has CHOSEN the remnant, and will bring this very thing to pass where Israel's desire for the Lord is rekindled? Israel's "desire will be for her husband yet he shall rule over her" (Gen 3:16) comes to mind . . . Blessings and thanks again! mommapbs |
