1 | Who is the "woman" who is the "man"? | Jer 31:22 | Hank | 86812
Mommapbs: The best I can offer is a quote from John MacArthur. Says he of the enigmatic sentence in Jeremiah 31:22: "A woman shall encompass a man. Here is one of the most puzzling statements in Jeremiah. Some see the virgin birth of Christ (but 'woman' means a woman, not a virgin, and 'encompass' or 'surround' does not suggest conceiving). Possibly it refers to the formerly virgin Israel (v.21), who is now a disgraced, divorced wife (v.22; 3:8). She will one day in the future re-embrace her former husband, the Lord, and He will receive her back, fully forgiven. That would be 'a new thing on the earth.'" [MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, p. 1106] Does this help clear it up for you? --Hank

Hi Hank - yes, thank you. I suspect that it is Israel as I see so much prophecy in Jeremiah regarding her future restoration. Israel will one day shout, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!" Yes, that will be a new thing! mommapbs |
