Greetings Mscanlon1! There are several issues that need to be addressed in regards to your question. The first question which must be addressed is the meaning of the terms themselves. Sceptics have long tried to argue that a 'maiden' or 'almah' is not the same as a 'virgin' or 'bethula'. They are partially right, but they are also partially wrong. A maiden would normally be a virgin. :-) Thus, the sharp distinction between the two terms simply doesn't work. Further evidence of this is that the Hebrew speaking translators of the LXX used the Greek word for 'virgin' to translate the Hebrew word 'almah'. Thus, they clearly understood Is. 7:14 as a reference to a virgin. The second issue that must be addressed is the original context of the prophecy. Some prophecies have dual meanings. The orginal prophecies probably only meant that a young woman, who was currently a virgin, would conceive and give birth as a sign to Israel at that time. However, we know from the New Testament that there was an even greater fulfillment where a virgin would conceive without knowing a mn. Which, brings us to the final issue. The doctrine of the Virgin Birth does not stand or fall upon how one translates the term in Is. 7:14. Why? Because, the inspired New Testament specifically tells us that Mary was a virgin. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Great points Steve and Tim, I think that he [my instructor] didn't use that angle specifically because it can be contradicted with the NT verse. Instead of trying to discredit the part that really mattered [Mary was a virgin], he only tries to discredit the prophetic aspect of the verse. By the way, I really appreciate the the help with this. This was my first post on this sight and you guys are pretty awesome resources! Murrai |

Greetings Murrai! Actually, It was Tim and Mark who responded with some great answers. All of it good but the point Tim makes regarding the inspired New Testament is something Christians need to keep in mind. In every attempt by a none believer to discredit the Word of God that I have seen, always falls short in light of the scriptures. This case is a good example of how one would have to disregard other scriptures in order for their argument to stand. Of course I'm convinced no argument will ever stand if it contradicts the Word of God :-) Let me take this time to invite you to continue to spend some time in this forum. I don't count myself in the mix but there are many others here that you can learn a lot from. You will find it is a good place to study and discuss the Word of God. God bless you in your study! Oops, you are right I meant to put Mark in the "thank you" section too! All of you have been very insightful and this sight is a God send. I have been browsing it periodically over the last few hours I guess, and the amount of information is delightfully overwhelming! I wish that I could somehow absorb this information so that I could more adequately defend the Christian faith when necessary. This blog that I have referred to is only one of many disapointingly ignorant situations that I encounter continually in the world of secular acedemia. I guess the only way to absorb is to study - so I will continue! :-) |

I hear ya! But keep in mind, there is nothing wrong with telling them you don't know. It still doesn't mean they are right and it certinaly doesn't mean our faith is not based on the truth. Don't forget to smile at them ;-) Knowing in all their selfrighteousness they are actually the ones that are wrong :-) and if it pleases the Lord God to open their eyes He will! Oh yea, and don't forget to pray for them! God bless, Steve |

Very true, and as obvious as that last part is. . .it seems to be the easiest to forget sometimes. Thanks for the reminder. Murrai |
