Hi Starfire, Just a few thoughts... 1. Life is in the blood, not blood brings forth life. (Lev. 17:11,14; Deut. 12:23) 2. God breathed life into man and he became a living soul. (Gen. 2:7) 3. The curse was multiplied pain in child birth, not child birth itself. God wants people to have babies and have dominion over the earth. (Gen. 3:16; Gen. 1:28) 4. The menstual blood is dead blood. It is what is shed from the uterus when a baby is not conceived. Therefore there is no longer any life in it. 5. Used menstrual cloths smell bad and you have to admit are disgusting. That is why we wrap them up and throw them in the trash. Conclusion: our righteousness is dead, has no life, smells bad, worthless and needs to be throw away. Therefore the comparison. God is not against the natural flow that he created. He is against us trying to earn our salvation. This graphic picture is used to make a point of how God sees our righteousness and to show us how much we need to trust in the righteousness of Jesus and the finished work of the cross for our salvation. Hope this helps, Bows44 |

Bows44, You've helped a great deal..esp. the part about scripture. Also, I hadn't thought about it as "dead" blood...interesting. Used menstrual cloths are not pleasant, but I still think there is plenty that is MUCH more smelly/disgusting ....Like the bandage over an infected wound, etc, etc. I guess the point though was God was not comparing SIN (truly vile) to this, but our OWN attempts of trying to earn our way into salvation. Maybe the point is that (using the wisdom you so kindly shared :-) our acts are pointless and no (eternal) life can flow from them just as when the menstrual cycle occurs, it's an indication that no life has been formed (egg was not fertilized); so both are useless when it comes to establishing life, eternal in one case, a child in the other. Also interesting point about the curse being the PAIN of childbirth. I've got to read that some more. I'd seen a (woman) minister once give a talk about how Eve must have been so startled after the fall when she first became pregnant and saw the stages her body was going through and prepared for delivery without anyone to help her through and not knowing WHAT to expect. That image had burned into my mind and somehow I missed that significant point that you shared. She'd had children most likely...just no PAIN with them. You have helped me my dear sister and I thank you. I appreciate the offer to speak off-site, however because some other woman may be in need of clarification regarding this passage and feeling God finds her "naturally" disgusting, I'd prefer it to be here. I don't want someone else feeling bad about her body as I had because of this passage. God Bless and Keep you, Dear Bows44!! |

Hi Starfire, I'd like to add at this point that there really is no indication that Eve had children before the fall. The indication from Romans 5, describing the imputation of sin, would argue that only Adam and Eve existed at that time, as Adam went on to pass his fallen nature to their progeny. On the other hand, we can only speculate about what knowledge of their humananity God say fit to impart to Adam and Eve. He may have given Eve the understanding of what would happen to her. We really don't know. I think you and Bows44 have brought some intresting insights to this passage. I would like to extend a (somewhat belated) welcome to the forum! :-) Love in Christ, Mark |

Mark, Wow you are brave responding to a question like this . LOL Truly, I appreciate your reply. I guess it was confusing and painful to me, because when I was a girl and started the menstruation process, my mother was so great telling me that it's NOT disgusting, but a *very special* gift that God gave to women that will some day allow me to have children and how it's ushering me into womanhood and how the whole bodily changes (puberty) was a magical time in a woman's life and should be viewed as simply evidence that I was growing into a woman, as God had designed. I appreciate your sharing about Eve and how much is speculation. I believe what I'm going to take from this is: 1) Menstrual rags are a reminder of our intial separation from God (I seriously doubt she had menstruated prior to the fall, because its function is to release the unfertilized egg and IF she hadn't born children, she may not even have had eggs.) Even if she did however, it still is a reminder that through our womb and it's functions we can bear life, pain and all, which is a result of the first sin. 2) Our righteous acts will never produce fruit (eternal life) just as menstruation is the evidence that there is no Fruit in our womb (child). Also 3) Also, it's really NOT menstruation, but the rags that were used that are compared to our own acts in our (futile) attempt for salvation. (and since menstual blood, as any secretion was considered "unclean", perhaps in the original language it was not "filthy" rags, but "unclean" rags. Neither is worthy of being in the Holy presence of our Lord. Thank you so much for caring enough to write and offer insight and comfort regarding this. May the Lord Bless You and Keep You |

Hi Starfire, All I can say is this: I am squeamish buying "those things" for my wife when she asks me to (I do it for her but I hate to) but I found no squeamishness in this thread, because it is a part of the Bible. And I really meant what I said, that you and Bows44 brought some good insights, things I would not have thought of simply reading this text by myself. You make a good point that God could have used as an example something more immediately repellent to everyone, but this example shows a more thorough analogy. I love that about the Bible, that it not only makes total sense on the surface, but continues to make total sense no matter how deeply you examine it. Thank you for your willingness to share with us, even such personal matters that most keep secret. Love in Christ, Mark |
