1 | KJV of Is59:19 uses the word "standard" | Is 59:19 | Ray | 49304
Good morning Tim, You understood my Luke 13:35 reference did you? O.K. Here is my question concerning Acts 13:47 and the rendering of the NASB and NKJ. I agree with the NKJ here. The words that I question or point out for the NASB I will put a star by. Acts 13:47, "For thus the Lord has commanded *us, 'I have placed *You as a light for the Gentiles, That *You should bring salvation to the end of the earth.'" Have a good day. Ray |

Greetings Ray! The NKJ seems to be a little more 'literal', but the meaning seems to be the same in both! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim, The meaning seems to be the same if you don't look at the capitalization. For there is a difference between "You and you" just as for Isaiah 59:19 there is a difference between "He and he". From the heart, Ray |

Hi Tim, The Hebrew people heard with their ears and the language didn't allow for capitalization differences, so I can understand how you didn't notice.:) For us today, however, the question is there for our eyes to see and evaluate. Tim, you went with "he" for Isaiah 59:19. What do you go with for Acts? From the heart, Ray |

6 | KJV of Is59:19 uses the word "standard" | Is 59:19 | Morant61 | 49414
Greetings Ray! I would probably go with "You" since the quote from Is. 42 is used in the context of the "Servant of the Lord" or "Christ". Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim, Now that you talk of the Servant of the Lord, I notice that the NKJ has Isaiah 42:6 with capitalized "You" words. I hadn't taken note of that before. Did you notice that the NASB and the NKJ have opposite capitalizations for Isaiah 42:6 and Acts 13:47? The problem is they do not show the same concern of keeping them the same case for both verses. I agree with you that the case, whether lower or upper, should be the same. However, I would put them both in lower case. Allow me to state my case.:) Acts 13:47, "For thus the Lord has commanded us,...". Paul is saying here that the messsage is for him, along with Barnabas. Therefore the correct rendering for my mind is, "I have placed *you as a light for the Gentiles, That *you should bring salvation to the end of the earth." Now as for the lower case in Isaiah 42:6, the NASB is already in lower case. I believe that they are correct in their rendering here because the preceding verse is talking about the people of the earth and the spirit of those who walk in it. Thus, they use the lower case "you" words for verse 6. The Servant is in the first verses of Isaiah 42, but much is said of the servant also. Isaiah 42:18, "Hear, you deaf! And look, you blind, that you may see. Who is blind but My servant, Or so deaf as My messenger whom I send? Who is so blind as he that is at peace with Me, Or so blind as the servant of the Lord? You have seen many things, but you do not observe them; Your ears are open, but none hears." Isaiah 49:3 is another verse where the capitalization is different between the NASB and the NKJ. Here I would go with the NKJ. Isa 49:3,4, NKJ, "And He said to me, 'You [you] are My servant, O Israel, In whom I will be glorified'. Then I said, 'I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain; Yet surely my just reward is with the Lord, And my work with my God.'" The verse after those two go on, "And now the Lord says,...". So the verse goes back to the Servant and the upper case. Isa 49:6, Indeed He says,'It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth." So I am not denying that the Servant is spoken of as "a light to the Gentiles", but I am saying that for Isaiah 42:6 and Acts 13:47 that it was taken as a command for Paul and indeed for us also. For we too glorify the word of the Lord. Acts 13:48. From the heart, Ray |
