Naturally, I'm assuming your post is directed to me instead of Gratefully Dead, as it contains most of the words from my post. (For future reference, it helps if you click on the post of whom you are directing your reply. But no harm done.) I realize that the Bible doesn't come out clearly and specifically condemn smoking per sae. But it is very clear that it is condemned by God so you see it's not I that is condemning this act, it's God. I'm merely allowing God's true light of truth shine through me just Peter and John when they were told by city officials to hush their preaching; what did they say? "Who are we to obey men or God?" We can and should do no more and no less. In reference to the other points of your message, I don't agree. God certainly does NOT condemn the consumption of alcohol IF it's not abused to excess. Same for any drug. The key here is moderation and what is it being used for. If for healing, good; if for an escape, not good at all. As I mentioned in my post, we should do all with complete faith as if we're doing a particular act in the actual physical prescence of God as that's the standard He'll be judging us. And of course no one can possibly defend any of these kind of abusive activities under such a standard. Now, please don't misunderstand. I know several members in my own congregation who are battling that awful monster of tobacco as you are. Their prayer is to get away from it but they slip up and give in ocassionally. That's where God's grace kicks in and covers us as His children. As long as we're sincerely trying our best to stay in God's good graces and beg forgiveness from Him through prayer when we fall short, His grace covers for our sins. I hope this is clear and God richest blessings on you. |

Rowdy, if you are going to advise this user that smoking is clearly condemned by God, shouldn't you at least offer him some specific scriptural reference so he can read it for himself? You are asking him to take your word for it. I doubt that that will satisfy him; it wouldn't me. You continue to tell him that God doesn't condemn the use of alcohol or ANY drug, if not used to excess. Perhaps your correspondent would like some scriptural evidence that what you are saying is biblical truth. Again, I would. --Hank

I provide scriptures to support my statement and you criticize. I make statements w/o scriptures and you criticize. I'm confused. Why don't you take a second look at my posts on this subject and present a logical statement that clearly OPPOSES the overall sentiment of my post. I do hope you're going to be a little more objective to my participation on this Forum. But as always I pray God blesses you with patience and tolerance for your fellow man and our weaknesses. Let me "hear" from you. Thanks. |

Rowdy, in this case your citation (1 Cor 6:18ff) does not cover smoking ... that it is a sin. While our body is temple of the Holy Spirit, if you say smoking is a sin, I think I can find something you do that is bad for your body. While I don't smoke, I can't say smoking is a sin.

I agree it's a conclusion that is drawn from God's Word on my part. But I do think it is a solid conclusion, one that is in agreement with the vast majority of christians, especially those who know their Bibles. BUT I don't want to cause a large controversy over this. I'm satisfied that those on the Forum who needed these words of encouragement and truth will get them from the few posts as cited. Believe it or not, I'm not striving to add or take anything away from God's Word. I'm just like you and the rest of those participating on this Forum. Yes, I too have my weaknesses and they're probably too many for a christian of my age and my background. But I think we all have to recognize the tremendous gift of grace from God above. But in order to qualify for that gift on a daily basis, we have to maintain a constant relationship with God and let him know through prayer that we really do intend to reform or repent from our sins every day. Now, don't get me wrong. When and if we give up on God for a period of time, it's easy to get back in His family and ask God's family for forgiveness, encouragement and support. This tenuious relationship with God is fragile only because we as humans have a difficult time being truly faithful. Again, we need to keep uppermost in our minds it's only by the Grace of God that any of us make it to Heaven. I hope this makes my position clear and God bless. Thanks for your post. |

It doesn't matter if a "majority" of Christians believe it. It is what is taught by some ... it could even be tradition. Methinks the men of the South would say it is okay. Side note ... I believe Christ died on Thursday - based on Scripture. Tradition teaches it is Friday ... some trands say it is Wednesady. |
