GreatfullyDead, I don't believe it is, that's a legalistic issue in my opinion. There was sort of a similar issue which Jesus dealt with only it was in regards to meat, but I think it can be applied here. Look at Matthew 15:10,11 "Jesus called the crowd to him and said, 'Listen and understand. What goes into a man's mouth does not make him unclean, but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him unclean." Jesus elaborates further in verse 18 that it's things of the heart that make a man unclean. Now, I would however be cautious when it comes to smoking around other Christians, and here's why. Romans 14:21 "It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak." I know back when I smoked, I did not smoke at Church functions, and I only smoked around my fellow Church members that I knew were 'ok' with it. So, if you think you're smoking will honestly offend your brother, or cause them to question matters of the faith, you need to refrain from smoking or smoke out of their sight. Love for your neighbor is the second most important commandment. Well, and last of course is smoking is in fact bad for you health wise. That's my 2 cents, God loves you, take care SUEDE |

3 | Is it sin to smoke a cigarette? | Is 44:1 | Rowdy | 114084
I realize Paul's instructions to the Corinthians is about sexual immorality but it sets a basic principle about our bodes in general. 1 Cor 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. 19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. If you'll check with any reformed ex-smoker or ex-drug user, they'll all tell you the same thing. That "stuff" in the human body becomes a monster, controlling your every waking moment. Indeed to most, it becomes a god so it most CERTAINLY IS a sin in our Father's eyes. I know this subject so well, not through experience as I have taken a few puffs of a cirgaret once in my life, many decades ago but my father was addicted and he's told me many times about how bad it got and the after affects to this day. If this is not enough, read again the scriptures below and tell me you can all in good conscience tell us that you'll be able to meet God at Judgment Day with a cirgaret in your hands or in your mouth. Yes, I know these verses are about eating but don't you see the folks in the 1st century didn't know anything about smoking tobacco. They did know about drinking alcohol to excess and that is also condemned so again the principle is quite clear. Rom 14:22 The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin. Please, I would beg you, DON'T give encouragement to anyone who is hooked on this junk and let him think God won't hold them accountable. We need to help educate people like this and love their souls enough to tell them the truth. I do hope you'll reconsider. There are far more damaging, long term effects than just the image you mentioned. God bless you in your study. |

GreatfullyDead I see Paul’s statement to the Corinthians as more specific, noting that he says “All OTHER sins man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.” We should note that adulterery is one of the 10 Commandments. I therefore think it is incorrect to use the “body as a temple defense”. Really, we have to ask ourselves, where does it end? Ok smoking is bad, what else? Well, alcohol is bad, so that too must be a sin. Caffeine alters your ‘temple’; therefore it is a sin too. In fact, all drugs alter your body, so we should let our child die instead of taking medication. Do you see the snowballing that legalism gets into? “”If you'll check with any reformed ex-smoker or ex-drug user, they'll all tell you the same thing. That "stuff" in the human body becomes a monster, controlling your every waking moment.”” Yes, I know. Not only am I an ex smoker, I’m also an ex drug user. But, I didn’t use the body as a temple statement. That carries way too many legalistic aspects as noted above. “”Please, I would beg you, DON'T give encouragement to anyone who is hooked on this junk and let him think God won't hold them accountable. We need to help educate people like this and love their souls enough to tell them the truth. I do hope you'll reconsider. There are far more damaging, long term effects than just the image you mentioned. God bless you in your study.”” Don’t get me wrong now. I certainly don’t give encouragement to anyone. In fact, I know that I can use my own testimony to help out others. I’ve been there with the smoking, I’ve been there with the drugs; I know. You should not do this, make no mistake. However we need to be careful what we condemn as a sin, we must avoid the Holier than thou mode of thinking. Cults do that, not Christians. Take care, SUEDE |

Naturally, I'm assuming your post is directed to me instead of Gratefully Dead, as it contains most of the words from my post. (For future reference, it helps if you click on the post of whom you are directing your reply. But no harm done.) I realize that the Bible doesn't come out clearly and specifically condemn smoking per sae. But it is very clear that it is condemned by God so you see it's not I that is condemning this act, it's God. I'm merely allowing God's true light of truth shine through me just Peter and John when they were told by city officials to hush their preaching; what did they say? "Who are we to obey men or God?" We can and should do no more and no less. In reference to the other points of your message, I don't agree. God certainly does NOT condemn the consumption of alcohol IF it's not abused to excess. Same for any drug. The key here is moderation and what is it being used for. If for healing, good; if for an escape, not good at all. As I mentioned in my post, we should do all with complete faith as if we're doing a particular act in the actual physical prescence of God as that's the standard He'll be judging us. And of course no one can possibly defend any of these kind of abusive activities under such a standard. Now, please don't misunderstand. I know several members in my own congregation who are battling that awful monster of tobacco as you are. Their prayer is to get away from it but they slip up and give in ocassionally. That's where God's grace kicks in and covers us as His children. As long as we're sincerely trying our best to stay in God's good graces and beg forgiveness from Him through prayer when we fall short, His grace covers for our sins. I hope this is clear and God richest blessings on you. |

So, out of curiosity, how can you condemn smoking (whether in excess or not) but condone the consumption of alcohol and "any drug" as long as it's in moderation? Sounds bogus to me.
7 | no smoking but alcohol and drugs ok? | Is 44:1 | Bojo2 | 114183
As long as your action doesn't make you wander from Jesus and the Gospel, it's all okay. By that I mean, if getting drunk causes you to sin, it's not okay. I've never seen a person lose focus of Jesus because of cigarettes. I have seen many people wander because of alcohol and other mind altering drugs. With that being said - Jesus not only drank wine, but made it. I think it all comes down to, are you gloryifing Christ with these actions? Does it bring you closer to Christ? If it does then smoke, drink, snort, shoot up! If it makes you lose your values, you should not be doing it. |

Bojo2: The thought occurred to me to take steps to restrict this post of yours so that it would not be seen on the home page of this Forum, but I want it to stand so that all users of this StudyBibleForum can see for themselves how unbiblical and outrageous it is. How can anyone with the sense of a goose envisage any possible way in which to "smoke, drink, snort, shoot up" can bring him closer to Christ? I recommend the study of this post as a sterling example of what a post on this Bible forum should not be. --Hank
9 | no smoking but alcohol and drugs ok? | Is 44:1 | BradK | 114210
Bojo2, Where on earth would you get such an ungodly idea that drug use/abuse are a way to get closer to Christ? They're not, and speaking as one who has been there and done that, I would condemn such a cavalier attitude. Scripture in both 1 Cor. 6:19-20, and Rom. 14:13 would strongly disprove such behavior. Smoking pot or snorting coke ARE NOT God-glorifying in any way, shape, or form. Get real! Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
