1 | Where ARE the four corners of the earth? | Is 11:12 | Taleb | 105603
TommyS, you ask some interesting questions. When I read this question in passing the other night, I knew I knew what you were talking about. At least I hoped I knew. :) It took some digging in my not quite organized filing system to locate an old article that refers to what I gleaned for you. According to the June 19, 1965 "Science News Letter" the four corners are: 1. One of the earth's corners centers over Ireland and sprawls northward towards the pole. 2. Another corner extends across the equator from New Guinea northward towards Japan. 3. A third corner is south of Africa centered about halfway to the Antartic. 4. The last corner is west of South Amercia, with the high point off Peru. If, by chance you desire more info - let me know. Blessings, Taleb P.S. I love how science so often proves Scripture, or is that the other way around. :) |

2 | Where ARE the four corners of the earth? | Is 11:12 | Hank | 105616
Taleb: Have you any knowledge of the credibility of the "Science News Letter"? Not meaning to put down your source (I know nothing about it whatever), but I would be interested in knowing more about this periodical and how the author(s) of this piece came by their knowledge of the "four corners of the earth." It does sound a bit far fetched to say the least. I'm not convinced that someone isn't pulling someone else's leg on this one! I've heard of "the four corners of the earth" being used in a figurative or poetic sense (as in Scripture), but this is the first time I've ever read of their having been pinpointed geographically. I wonder whether they can also tell us how tall and what color the North and South Poles are :-) --Hank
3 | Where ARE the four corners of the earth? | Is 11:12 | Taleb | 105643
Good morning, Hank. Do you remember when “space travel” began? Do you remember the time before desktop computers? So do I. And you are right. The earth having four corners does “sound farfetched”. About as farfetched as a handheld computer sounded when it took a huge room to hold one computer. As far as the credibility of that “Science News Letter 87:139 dated June 19, 1965 – what’s to doubt? Why would the U.S. Navy and John Hopkins University “conspire” to change the shape of the world? Because the mentioned article didn’t refer to any Scripture doesn’t make it less credible. I have read many articles filled with Scripture that are deceptive through and through. We look at a globe and, because it was “designed” centuries before “science” discovered the real shape of the world, we take it as “credible” that the world is round. A grapefruit is round. Pears and eggs aren’t. Which one best “describes” the world as we know it today? Hint – it’s two out of the above three. While an egg and pear have "no corners" they have "angles". Do I dare to write about the "actual pillars" that Scripure accurately describes in 1 Sam. 2:8? Blessings, Taleb P.S. About the color of the North and South Poles – they are the exact same color as forgiven sin. Though our sins be as scarlet, they shall become white as the Poles. :) |

4 | Where ARE the four corners of the earth? | Is 11:12 | Makarios | 105644
Greetings Taleb, [1 Samuel] "2:8 pillars of the earth. A common figure in the OT for the solid base on which the earth (the dry land on which man lives, not planet earth; Gen. 1:10) is founded. The phrase does not teach a particular theory of the structure of the universe (see Job 9:6; 38:6; Ps. 75:3; 104:5; Zech. 12:1)." Makarios, I have many (too many, actually) “study Bibles” on my shelves. While they are somewhat valuable, they are NOT inspired. What I honestly enjoy is discovering where “outside sources” discover what the inspired Word declares. I've discovered the vast majority of the time every scientific "theory" that acutally becomes a “proven discovery” can be BACKED up with Scripture. And I acknowledge, before every scientific discovery, Scripture was as true BEFORE it was ever written, as it is today. Never has there been any "authentic" discovery that DISPROVES any Scripture. Agreed? Job’s (which is the oldest writings in the Bible) “Balancing of the clouds” isn’t merely figurative speech. In my lifetime (which, by the way, is a very lonnnnng time) it was discovered Job 37:16’s talk about the “balance of the clouds” was precise. Thunderclouds shoot negative charges down to the earth AND they shoot the “same sized” positive charges up to the heavens. Gen. 1:20 "Let the waters teem with shoals of living creatures" ... everyone used to think this was all the fish. Since the microscope we KNOW waters do teem with shoals of living creatures - one drop at a peek. The "laws of gravity and inerta" are revealed in Job 38:33. This was before any apple fell on what's his name. :) It also isn’t figuratively written in Job 26:13 about the “heavens being garnished”. Unseen with the naked eye, but seen with powerful telescopes IS a “garnished-with-brilliant-colored-heaven”. Eccl. 1:6 telling about the circulation of the invisible atmosphere was already true long before officially proven scientifically. Gen. 3:15 talks about the “seed of WOMAN”; Heb. 7:9-10 talk about the “seed of MAN”. It wasn’t long ago that science “discovered” BOTH seeds are necessary for being fruitful and multiplying. But rather than discussing the multitudes of discoveries that science has made backing up Scripture let me stick to YOUR topic. The official discovery of physical “pillars” happen to enhance Scripture. Thanks for providing the Scripture verses were God tells us about what has been discovered. How do YOU picture “pillars”? Please don’t say tall, skinny posts. :) The “earth’s foundation” WAS discovered. Mantle rock under the oceans is only 2 miles thick in places BUT under the “earth” (remember God separated the earth from the oceans) it is estimated to be 300 miles. There are seven continents. Each one has its own “foundation socket” or pillar. This is not a play on words. For how many centuries did “believers” think these “unproven” verses were only to be taken figuratively? The study-Bible’s statement: “The phrase does not teach a particular theory of the structure of the universe” is almost right. Blessings upon you, too Taleb |

6 | Where ARE the four corners of the earth? | Is 11:12 | Makarios | 105685
Greetings Taleb, I, too, have a rich wealth of Study Bibles at my disposal, and I would much rather use any one of those resources that I have that were written for and about the Bible and rely upon what they teach, rather than to rely on some 'scientific article.' I would just love to get into a 'competition' with you regarding just who has the best commentary to back up his position, and I am very confident that I would win that battle. But my whole purpose in returning to this Forum was not because of any sort of competition, but because of the fact that I actually did have something to offer to it in a positive way. When I was younger and not as experienced in posting: yes, I would happily go round and round with you, just to 'prove you wrong.' But I write now not in a spirit of competition, but in a spirit of willingness to be used for the purpose of God only. And my posts have changed greatly since then. I do agree that the majority of scientific findings can be supported by Scripture, although I do not believe so in the case of the earth having 'four distinct corners.' If we for once took to your description and considered that as truth, then I come up with more questions than answers, such as 'why only four distinct corners'? And how would the earth's topography in these corners be distinguished from that of any other region? Also, would these four corners actually make the earth round? Could any "corner" do that? And how is it that a "corner" could be 'distinguished'? Is not the earth round, all the way around? I believe that to presuppose that the earth has 'corners' is a clear contradiction of Isaiah 40:22. Blessings to you, Makarios |
