1 | Why don't you know for sure? | Eccl 11:6 | Aixen7z4 | 99940
I am surprised to find myself disturbed by the thought that God leaves us so much on our own. God knows we often don’t know what we are doing. We make mistakes, we waste time, and sometimes, as now, we don’t even know if we are doing just that. Why should we as God’s children sow seed without knowing if it will grow and bear fruit (as in Ecclesiastes 11:6)? Why should we preach the word out of season (as in 2 Timothy 4:2)? Yes, a sower went forth to sow, etc. But also, he calls us friends, not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth. So many things we discuss here and we have different opinions. It is not clear what the Lord is saying. And why does he let us do it? It is not clear what he is doing. Will you just share your opinion now and hope it does some good? |

One thing you must realize is that you are reading the Old Testament. I believe that He left us alone for so long because we were not following the laws that He handed down to Moses. Once Jesus came and died God sent us the Holy Spirit. We are living in a time of Grace and Mercy which was not available to those in the Old Testament days. I'm going to research more of the scriptures but wanted to answer this best to my knowledge as we just went over this in my bible school. To answer the second half of your question once Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit God gave us freedom to make or own choices. He wants us to choose Him but instead we turn away and do what we want.

"We are living in a time of Grace and Mercy which was not available to those in the Old Testament days." If there was no grace and mercy in those days, what was the purpose of the sacrificial system? Was that not a visible demonstration of God's grace? I also think that David spoke enough about God's efficacious, "steadfast love" in the Psalms to eliminate any doubt of God's grace in the OT. --Joe! |

I'm just going by the history of God's anger among the people of Israel, Yes there was forgiveness from God and He gave them another chance but once God got fed up that was it He destroyed the earth by the flood, and He also destroyed Sodom and Gomora(excuse the spelling I'm at work and don't have my bible in front of me. Joe I am not an expert but this is what has been said in the new testament and is always being said around me that we are now living under God's grace and Mercy. I hear countless Pastor's say this.

"'m just going by the history of God's anger among the people of Israel, Yes there was forgiveness from God and He gave them another chance but once God got fed up that was it He destroyed the earth by the flood, and He also destroyed Sodom and Gomora" Both of those are pre-Israelite examples, but I get the idea. The Assyrian invasion and the Babylonian captivity were examples of God's judgment of Israel's apostasy. But we do not need to scan the New Testament too long to see that God has the same thing planned for rebellious humanity in the New Testament. In Revelation 1-3 Jesus declares that churches that dishonor his name will be removed or even spit out of his mouth. The second epistle of Peter reveals an even greater judgment ahead for the people of this world. God was very gracious in the OT, giving the Law, delivering Israel from captivity, sending judges to rescure Israel, sending prophets to proclaim His truth, raising up godly kings from time to time who called Israel to repentance, and declaring redemption through the coming Messiah. "Joe I am not an expert but this is what has been said in the new testament and is always being said around me that we are now living under God's grace and Mercy. I hear countless Pastor's say this." I know you probably do, and I agree when people say we are living under the grace of God. My disagreement is when they say Old Testament Israel was not living under God's grace and mercy. They were. There is a false distinction given between the "Old Testament" people of God and the "New Testament" people of God. While we are the beneficiaries of more revelation and greater grace in a certain sense, and while some changes took place at Pentecost, there is one people of God, not two (Ephesians 2:14 ff.) --Joe! |

[In Revelation 1-3 Jesus declares that churches that dishonor his name will be removed or even spit out of his mouth.] I thought once saved, always saved. What happened here? |

"I thought once saved, always saved. What happened here?" Nothing. CHURCHES are not once saved, always saved. CHURCHES. Congregations. Not individuals. Not people. Kind of like Israel, which was often invaded and subjugated in judgment even if there were SOME righteous people keeping God's covenant. They were saved; Israel was not spared. --Joe! |

You either have ETERNAL life or you don't. I don't see anywheres where you have eternal life then you don't its a contradiction if that was the case. Israel was not spared? They seem to be doing fine It is where Jesus will return and set up his kingdom. God isn't in the habit of breaking promises. Israel was/is being punished, but God has not forgotten them or broke the Covenant with them. |

"You either have ETERNAL life or you don't. I don't see anywheres where you have eternal life then you don't its a contradiction if that was the case." I agree. "Israel was not spared?" It wasn't obliterated, but it certainly wasn't spared from God's judgment. Ten of the twelve tribes were scattered to the four winds by the Assyrians, for example. The Old Testament shows this, and Jesus accurately prophesies the destruction of the Temple in A.D. 70. "They seem to be doing fine" I wouldn't call generation upon generation of Jews going to hell due to rejection of their Messiah "doing well." "God isn't in the habit of breaking promises." No he isn't, but many of his promises are conditional. In the case of the churches in Revelation, for example, "Israel was/is being punished, but God has not forgotten them or broke the Covenant with them." Of course he hasn't, but most Jews nowadays show themselves to be covenant breakers. While he will always preserve a remnant of Israel, spiritual Israel consists of covenant-keeping Jews (read: Christian Jews) and the Gentiles who have been grafted in (read: Christian Gentiles). Those who will be in hell are not recipients of God's eternal covenant blessings. --Joe! |

...I wouldn't call generation upon generation of Jews going to hell due to rejection of their Messiah "doing well." This statement, I'm not confortable with. I know I could get into a debate on the forum about it. But would rather tnot. I will just say that I am not confotable with it and leave it at that. ...Of course he hasn't, but most Jews nowadays show themselves to be covenant breakers. While he will always preserve a remnant of Israel, spiritual Israel consists of covenant-keeping Jews (read: Christian Jews) and the Gentiles who have been grafted in (read: Christian Gentiles). Those who will be in hell are not recipients of God's eternal covenant blessings. The Jews are promised the Land of Cannon. the Promise was actually given to Abraham God also made the covenant to Himself. If you look back at Genesis God walked through the cut animals alone (This is when Abraham asked God to "prove it" and Abraham had the dream. Abraham never walked through. So technecally speaking Its a Covenant with God. But the way most people view it is Abraham and God who made the covenant with Conditions Abrahams Condition was to leave his home land he did that. When it comes to Hell I believe there is a hell but at the same time I believe there is something we are missing somewheres. I dunno where it is or what it is. For example Jews are given 2 threats they are 1) To be cut off (Kicked out of Israel) 2) To die by the sword. I never see hell as a judgment with them. The New Testement Jesus said about Judas. Its better for him not to have been born. That seems a mild compared to hell. Job wished the same thing in Job. I don't believe in pugatory or anything like that. I just think there is something we are missing and I have no clue what it is. In Christ, Darcy |

'The Jews are promised the Land of Cannon. the Promise was actually given to Abraham God also made the covenant to Himself. If you look back at Genesis God walked through the cut animals alone (This is when Abraham asked God to "prove it" and Abraham had the dream. Abraham never walked through. So technecally speaking Its a Covenant with God. But the way most people view it is Abraham and God who made the covenant with Conditions Abrahams Condition was to leave his home land he did that.' I wasn't speaking of the Abrahamic Covenant, but rather the Sinaitic Covenant God made with the liberated Israel. "When it comes to Hell I believe there is a hell but at the same time I believe there is something we are missing somewheres. I dunno where it is or what it is. For example Jews are given 2 threats they are 1) To be cut off (Kicked out of Israel)" To be cut off from God's covenant people means no salvation. We have to remember that hell is much more defined by the Messiah himself, and his warnings of hell were given to his Jewish disciples. The words of John the Baptist to the Jews are also instructive: 'But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance; and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father'; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. The axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."' --Matthew 3:7-12 Clearly Jewish covenant unfaithfulness was more than geopolitical exile. "The New Testement Jesus said about Judas. Its better for him not to have been born. That seems a mild compared to hell." What Jesus is saying is it would have been better for Judas not to have existed precisely because he will be in hell. --Joe! |
