1 | Thomas Watson on Hypocrisy | Ps 119:80 | DocTrinsograce | 140519
Excerpt from "A Reproof to Such as are Only Pretenders to Godliness" by Thomas Watson (1603-1684) Question: When is a man under the dominion and power of hypocrisy? Answer: There are two signs of its predominance: (i) A squint eye, when one serves God for sinister ends. (ii) A good eye, when there is some sin dear to a man, which he cannot part with. These two are as clear signs of a hypocrite as any I know. Oh, let us take David's candle and lantern, and search for this leaven, and burn it before the Lord. Christian, if you mourn for hypocrisy, yet find this sin so potent that you cannot get the mastery of it, go to Christ. Beg of Him that He would exercise His kingly office in your soul, that He would subdue this sin, and put it under the yoke. Beg of Christ to exercise His spiritual surgery upon you. Desire Him to lance your heart and cut out the rotten flesh, and that He would apply the medicine of his blood to heal you of your hypocrisy. Say that prayer of David often: 'Let my heart be sound in thy statutes.' 'Lord, let me be anything rather than a hypocrite.' Two hearts will exclude from one heaven. |

Hey Doc hope this day finds you well and blessed of God. Very convicting, very thought provoking. I have few thoughts on this also and I want to be sure I'm on the same page with you and I'm tracking in the same direction you are. Are you talking about deciet (Paul referse in Phil1:15-17 to those who preach Christ out of selfish ambition.) and on the second are you talking about unresolved unconfessed sin. Just wanna be sure I'm seeing what your seeing. I will wait for your reply and then we can persue the rest of this together. Thanx bro. lionheart |

3 | Thomas Watson on Hypocrisy | Ps 119:80 | DocTrinsograce | 140527
Hi, Lionheart... Actually, it was an excerpt from something Thomas Watson had written. I was reading through his description of a true Christian today -- I tend to read the old Puritans quite a bit. I just thought that that particular portion warranted sharing. My motivation was rooted in nothing more than a hope that others in the forum might find it insightful as well. Your reference to Paul's comments in Phil 1 was very interesting. I suppose that this could apply to the notion of hypocrisy. However, I've always thought that the folks Paul was talking about had some kind of pride thing going. In Him, Doc |

Thanx Doc that was much appreciated! That gives me much to consider in my own walk with God. The one thing I want to ensure is that my walk with God is out of pure motives first and formost. I know I'm gonna blow it every day and that I need Gods forgiveness every single day of my life. It keeps me honest with God and gratefull for what he works in my life every day.Thank you again my brother. lionheart |
