1 | How did Nehemiah obey the kosher laws ? | Neh 1:11 | singaporean | 117521
If being a cupbearer involved tasting all the king ate or drank, how did Nehemiah abide by the Jewish rules about clean and unclean food ? How, with such a job description, did he "fast and pray for days" ? I'm sure there is a logical answer as Scripture is inerrant. Could you help ?

Thank you for your answer. I understand what you are saying, but I find that often my not understanding the culture or context hides some answers from me. Matthew Henry for example, comments, "Nearly four months passed, from Chisleu to Nisan (from November to March), before Nehemiah made his application to the king for leave to go to Jerusalem, either because the winter was not a proper time for such a journey, and he would not make the motion till he could pursue it, or because it was so long before his month of waiting came, and there was no coming into the king's presence uncalled, Est 4:11. Now that he attended the king's table he hoped to have his ear." This suggests that there was a system of rotation for the cupbearers and he was able to fast because he was "off duty" so to speak. However, there still remains the question of tasting the king's food and adhering to the Jewish food laws. I ask these questions not frivously but to try to help a friend who is searching but bothered by these seeming contradictions (which I know must have a (usually simple) answer to). Appreciate your view, which is one way of looking at things. :) Thank you. |
