NASB | Nehemiah 1:11 "O Lord, I beseech You, may Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant and the prayer of Your servants who delight to revere Your name, and make Your servant successful today and grant him compassion before this man." ¶ Now I was the cupbearer to the king. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Nehemiah 1:11 "Please, O Lord, let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant and the prayer of Your servants who delight to [reverently] fear Your Name [Your essence, Your nature, Your attributes, with awe]; and make Your servant successful this day and grant him compassion in the sight of this man [the king]." For I was cupbearer to the king [of Persia]. |
Subject: How did Nehemiah obey the kosher laws ? |
Bible Note: Thank you for your answer. I understand what you are saying, but I find that often my not understanding the culture or context hides some answers from me. Matthew Henry for example, comments, "Nearly four months passed, from Chisleu to Nisan (from November to March), before Nehemiah made his application to the king for leave to go to Jerusalem, either because the winter was not a proper time for such a journey, and he would not make the motion till he could pursue it, or because it was so long before his month of waiting came, and there was no coming into the king's presence uncalled, Est 4:11. Now that he attended the king's table he hoped to have his ear." This suggests that there was a system of rotation for the cupbearers and he was able to fast because he was "off duty" so to speak. However, there still remains the question of tasting the king's food and adhering to the Jewish food laws. I ask these questions not frivously but to try to help a friend who is searching but bothered by these seeming contradictions (which I know must have a (usually simple) answer to). Appreciate your view, which is one way of looking at things. :) Thank you. |
