1 | women be silent? - 1 Cor 14 | 1 Timothy | timurray2000 | 112405
Our pastor resigned last night. I was at a meeting to discuss what we need to do next and the suggestion to have a men's meeting this Saturday came up. The only woman in the room suggested a "men's" meeting will upset a lot of women in the church. Someone brought up 1 Cor 14:34-35 as a basis for having this men's meeting. 34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. 35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. Others said this scripture was being taken out of context. Does this scripture support the men of the church assembling to make decisions? |

2 | women be silent? - 1 Cor 14 | 1 Timothy | kate47 | 112406
Of course women should participate in church. In the Corinthian church, Corinth had become a matriarchial society, and the women would disagree with something going on or being said in the church. They would just stand up and heckle. What a bunch. Paul addressed this issue, in the scripture you are referring to. There are many scriptures referring to the behaviour of women, often taken out of context. For instance, wives obey your husbands...etc. Many men love these scriptures, as they justify ill mannered, very poor behaviour with them. What they do not do, is read the rest of the scripture, which prescribes the male's behaviour. Women played a very significant role in the NT church, they were deacons, prophets, they could be everything but an elder or a pastor *referred to as a bishop* Should women have a voice in the church? Of course. The best thing about having both genders included in these sorts of situations is that men and women process information differently. What a great thing to have many perspectives, before committing to a pastor. Taking time, praying, and seeking counsel, praying some more, taking as much time as needed, and praying somemore is usually the correct way to select a pastor. Too many are in a hurry, and forget that God has exactly whom HE wants to lead your church. It may not be in your time, but the right person will come along and God will show both the men and the women the correct person to be your new pastor. It's always such a hard thing to loose your pastor. I shall pray for your church, that you will all be sensitive to God's leading in acquiring a new leader for your church. God Bless, Kate. |

3 | women be silent? - 1 Cor 14 | 1 Timothy | Searcher56 | 112408
Kate ... There are churches that say in their rules (by laws, consitution) that women should not speak in the business meetings. They reason the women should tell their husband ... singles need to tell a man. Should wives not obey their husbands because their husbands don't do their part? |

Are you just looking to nit pick or do you really have a sensible question? I doubt it, this is nothing but baiting, or you cannot read. You decide which. I'm not playing. Kate. |

You said, "There are many scriptures referring to the behaviour of women, often taken out of context. For instance, wives obey your husbands ... etc. Many men love these scriptures, as they justify ill mannered, very poor behaviour with them. What they do not do, is read the rest of the scripture, which prescribes the male's behaviour." All I asked was "Should wives not obey their husbands because their husbands don't do their part?" ... because you implied that if a husband doesn't to his part, he can't force his wife to to hers ... or she doesn't have to her part, if he doesn't to his part. Both use the excuse that if the other doesn't do their part, they don't need to do their part. |
