1 | Have you spoke in tongues? | 1 Corinthians | rrherzog | 116976 | ||
Same question can be asked about salvation. How can you be sure that you are saved? Because the Word of God say's you are if you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. Same with speaking in tongues. The Word tells us that we can pray in the understanding or we can pray in the spirit. It also say's 1 Cor. 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. So you see we do not always know what we say when we pray. And before we say that tongues is just a foreign language, lets not forget that the scripture say's that no man understands him because he speaks not to man, but to God. So this cannot be speaking in a natural tongue as some would say. What purpose would it do for me to pray to God in another lanquage such as Spanish when I speak in English? Everything we receive from God is by faith, from salvation to tongues to healing. It is all in the Bible, and the same gifts that God gave the apostles of that time He gives to us, or else He would be a respector of man, and He is not. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. Remember the Apostle Paul said himself, 1 Cor. 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: God Bless, Your Brother in Christ |

rrherzog I agree with what you said about faith and tongues, however there is one aspect I would like to discuss. You said "...same gifts that God gave the apostles of that time He gives to us, or else He would be a respecter of man, and He is not." Is that true? Didn't God give the anointing to David to be King of Israel? I assure you I never got it also. He gave Elijah and Elisha powerful ministries but gave Elisha twice what he gave Elijah. Paul had a very traumatic salvation experience but I think he was probably the only one that experienced God to that extent. I think you have ripped this verse Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: from context. Peter was saying God provided salvation to the Jews and gentiles. If God gave everyone equally then we all could play every instrument, paint any masterpiece, be leaders of countries, have the skill of surgeons, the stamina of a well conditioned athlete, preach perfect sermons, and write hit songs. No God gives gifts as they are needed for His glory. I really do believe in tongues, but I also believe we seek the gifts harder than we seek God. We desire the gifts more than we desire a closer relationship with God. We would rather be used of God giving a message in tongues more than serving God in the nursery or speaking life into the children in Sunday School. We need to get these things into right balance before we can expect to convince the rest Christianity of their validity. Jesus in Acts 1 said we would receive the Holy Spirit to empower us evangelize. Yet today the Pentecostal church is probably one of the worst in evangelism. Once we realize the gifts weren’t given to “entertain” the church but were given to change the world and start using them as such things will change. I guarantee the minute people are drawn into church to “truly” worship God every church will want to know what drew them in. I also think the gifts of the Holy spirit are far too precious (holy) "when properly used" to have their validity debated. EdB |

I believe you are right in some instances of seeking the gifts with more intensity than we seek God with. However it is my belief in studying the scriptures that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are very important in our seeking God. They can be used for the edification of the Body of Christ and to win the lost. Also I believe according to the scriptures and by my experience, that praying in the Holy Spirit builds us up personally. Jude 1:20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith; praying in the Holy Spirit; Remember Pauls say's 1 Cor. 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. When we know what we should pray for, we pray in the understanding. When we know not how to pray, we pray in the Spirit. EdB, I do understand what you mean though. I have seen this happen where people seek the gifts more than the One that gives them. Sometimes I believe just to be noticed. On another note, I think that you misunderstood me when I said God was not a respecter of man. I realize that we have different talents and natural gifts, but I am talking about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is true that we don't all operate in all of the gifts, but Paul tells us to desire the gifts. 1 Cor. 12:31 But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way. This is the last verse in this Chapter in which Paul list all the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Also, I don't know where you got your facts concernig the evangelistic efforts of Pentecostals, but I belong to the biggest Church in our area, which is Pentecostal and I know that we are a Church that believes in turning out to win the lost and not a Church that just turns in to ourselves. Maybe we are the exception. And you said I ripped Acts 10:34, but if you read further in verses 44-46 you will see that they also were filled with the Holy Ghost. And it is not you that I am concerned with in showing the validity of the gifts for today because you believe them. It is those that doubt these precious Holy gifts from God that I am concerned with. One thing we really need to remember. We can talk about this all day, but I believe the more excellent way Is Love. Be Blessed Your Brother In Christ Rick |
