Grace and Truth: If you don't know whether believers in the "faith only doctrine" [as you describe it] use the book of James -- and obviously you don't -- then at least be intellectually honest and admit that you don't know! Be it known to you that the Southern Baptist Church, of which I am a member, believes and accepts ALL Scripture as being God-breathed! -- albeit we may not refer to the book of James or any other specific book or passage of the Bible quite as frequently as those of your camp refer to Mark 16:16 or Acts 2:38..... Furthermore, regarding prayer, are you actually calling the prayer of a penitent sinner a man-made doctrine? What is prayer? Is it not a communication with God? Tell me, therefore, what the criminal on the cross was doing when he said to the Lord Jesus Christ, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your Kingdom." [Luke 23:42] Did Jesus hear his prayer? Did He answer it? [v.43]. So to you the prayer of a sinner is a man-made doctrine? I suppose it belongs in the trash can along with instrumental music in worship and all those other "man-made doctrines" that don't fit into the scheme devised and promulgated by the Churches of Christ who, of course are the only true believers on the face of the earth, and who proclaim most emphatically and most surely that they really don't have any creeds! --Hank
2 | Ques. for Grace andTruth | Romans | Treadway | 51495
After only a week or so, interacting with the StudyBibleForum members, I am struck with this stupeying observance: One Book, inspired, God-breathed, inerrant and about 1500 or so different denominations with differents "takes", different beliefs, different approaches. How can this be? This site was recommended to me as an aid to my understanding, but so far, it has added to my confusion. I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of other Christian websites that may help? Treadway |

3 | Ques. for Grace andTruth | Romans | Morant61 | 51503
Greetings Treadway! You asked, "How can this be?" The answer is pretty simple: When people ignore Scriptures or misinterpret them, confusion and false doctrine results. Our recent discussions about Acts 2:38. Many have ignored the grammar of this verse and as a result have come up with a false doctrine (i.e. that we must be baptized to be saved). Further, many have ignored the clear teachings of Scripture which demonstrate that this doctrine is false. Hence, we have different denominations with different beliefs. However, having said that, I still believe that the vast majority of protestant denominations are closer in their beliefs than most realize. There may be minor differences of emphasis, but the core beliefs are the same (in most). Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
