chapter 4 Jesus was talking to the Samaritian woman at the well. v.19 "Sir", the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. v.20 Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem. v.21 Jesus declared, "believe me woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem v.22 you Samaritians worship what you do not know;we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. v.23 yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. v.24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth. God is not limited to one location, nor does he identify with only one nation. the whole universe is his, and he is present everywhere. genuine worship involves both fact and faith. truth means we are to worship the right God the God revealed in the Bible through Jesus Christ. spirit means that true worship demands more than just outward motions. it is an inner submission of oneself to God.(Romans 12:1) Sanctification in greek( hagiasmos) as used in the Scriptures means to make holy, to consecrate, to separate from the world, and be set apart from sin in order that we may have close fellowship with God and serve Him. pray this will help you God bless. | ||||||

Service and Worship There are six verbs in the Bible that are translated into English as "worship." One of the six means "to prostrate oneself, bow down." The other five do not. Hebrew 1) sahah, "to worship, prostrate oneself, bow down." Greek 2) proskuneo, "to make obeisance, do reverence to." 3) sebomai, "to revere." 4) sebazomai, "to honor religiously." 5) latreuo, "to serve, to render religious service or homage." 6) eusebeo, "to act piously towards" (Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, 1984, Thomas Nelson Publishers). ------------ Latreia (Strong's Number: 2999) Definition: 1. service rendered for hire a. any service or ministration: the service of God 2. the SERVICE AND WORSHIP of God according to the requirements of the Levitical law (emphasis added) 3. to perform sacred services ------------- Romans 12:1 (KJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service (Strong's 2999, latreia). NASB Romans 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. ("service of worship.") AMPLIFIED Romans 12:1 I APPEAL to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship. ("service and spiritual worship.") (TEV) So then, my friends, because of God's great mercy to us I appeal to you: Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should offer. ("worship.") (GOD'S WORD Translation) Brothers and sisters, in view of all we have just shared about God's compassion, I encourage you to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, dedicated to God and pleasing to him. This kind of worship is appropriate for you. ("worship.") (HSCB) Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship[2]. ("spiritual worship.") HCSB footnote [2]. Or 'your reasonable service'. |

Makarios: Thank you. From the material I posted yesterday the conclusion I draw is: though they are not one and the same thing, worship and service are so closely connected it is as if they were two sides of the same coin. How do you truly worship God without serving Him? How do you truly serve Him without worshiping him? Check your email and, when you have time, I would be interested in your response to what I sent you yesterday. Grace to you, kalos |
