CDBJ Believing in Jesus also assumes an obedience to Jesus. Jesus said if you love me you will obey my commands. Back to your illustration of the gift of life in paradise. To realize the gift you had to get on the plane you could not near it you had to get on it. Further you had to get into it, you could not just stand on the wing. Once you get to island you must get off the plane you can't enjoy the island of paradise staying on the plane. once off you have to experiencing it. Just as you can't enjoy your salvation without experiencing it. Further as you get off the plane a caretaker greets you and says you are free to enjoy the island but there are few rules you must follow. When you see a sign warning of quick sand you must avoid the quick sand or you will be sucked under. Second when you see a sign that says low ceiling you must duck you head or you run the chance of hitting your head. This is exactly what the Bible does it warns us of things that will suck us under or smack us in the head. Even though we have the gift of salvation if we refuse to heed the commands of Christian living we will never fully realize the joy of our salvation. So while we don't have to do anything for our salvation we must obey Jesus' commands to fully realize it and enjoy it. As James said without works faith is dead nothing more than a word. |

2 | how do you know if you are saved? | John | CDBJ | 238143 | ||
Greetings, Just as being on the jet plane is a function, being in Christ is the same type of function and it’s accomplished by the Holy Spirit AFTER one trusts in the work that Jesus accomplished on the cross. Abraham believer God; Galatians 3:6 (NKJV) 6 just as Abraham "believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." Abraham’s works only demonstrated the trust that he already had in God when he was about to sacrifice his son Isaac. It wasn’t a means of obtaining righteousness and he proved this when he said that God will provide the sacrifice before the two even went up the mountain. The way of our salvation taught to us by the Holy Spirit was the same salvation shown to Abraham; God will provide His Son to take our just due, i.e. God’s anointed one, the Christ. Galatians 3:8 (NKJV) 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, "In you all the nations shall be blessed." We, in essence were place on that plane the same way we are placed in Christ for positional truth and then the transformation takes place not visa versa! I’ve used this illustration before but here it is again for those that haven’t heard it. Faith is a lot like poison ivy, when one gets poison ivy they can’t keep from scratching, I’m speaking from experience! If another person sees this and they start scratching they could scratch until they are blue in the face and they still don’t get poison ivy because they haven’t come into personal contact with the ivy vine. Jesus said I am the vine. Illustrations just like parables can only go so far and then they brake down and there are those that can find fault with everything: I’m glad that my Saviour is faultless! The religious crowed in Jesus time went out of their way trying to find fault with Christ and Jesus Said: Matthew 15:14 (NKJV) 14 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch." CDBJ |

CDBJ I read your use of faith and trust as being synonymous. I see trust as faith being made alive. Abraham had faith but Abraham had to be tested before that faith was made alive as trust. Genesis 22:12 (NASB) 12 He said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me." In regards to the question “How do I know if I’m saved” I’m trying to emphasis is unless we can trust what we have faith in that faith is empty. The only way I know that, that trust can be realized is by having it imparted in us by the Holy Spirit. Then it becomes I know that I know type of thing. I found your comment about Illustrations and Parables only being able to go so far before they break down interesting. This is usually true of man's illustrations and parables but not of Christ's :-) |
