Their is a play on words between Jabez and 'oseb(pain). Because of that his name was likely to bring him many unpleasant circumstances. Many belived that the only way to change this was to change his name. However, Jabez did not do this. Instead he prayed to God. It is believed that the writer emphasized this to show that direct prayer can change the fortunes of life. His prayer was very special. It was a prayer for spiritual properity. It also asked for the enlargement of his coast and deliverence from evil. He showed great spiritual discernment. He prayed not to be kept from evil but to be kept from being grieved by it. He acknowledged that God was indeed the true center of his life. I may be mistaken but I believe that there was a book that came out recently about the prayer of Jabez.
