1 | Why did Jesus call this woman a dog? | Mark 7:27 | rmiddleton | 128633
Yes, I did and some were very helpful in studying this out. You should be able to follow through the thread and see the responses. The following is the conclusion I came to after further study This did help in that it led me search out more scriptures and commentaries. I have come to the following conclusions: The Savior did not use the word dogs as an epithet to be applied to this woman, but only as a part of the metaphor, by which he illustrated his position in respect to her and her nation. He says that, as it would not be proper to give the food intended for the children of a family to the dogs, so it is doubtful whether he ought to bestow upon the Gentile nations those miraculous benefits which he was sent to communicate to God's own chosen people. This was very different from applying the term to her as an opprobrious epithet. Hence the point and beauty of her reply,--that the dogs were not to be entirely neglected, but might at least receive some small share footnote - most of the above was gleaned directly from Abbots commentary and MHC - not my words but helped to crystalize my conclusion. Again, Thanks for your help! This forum is a great tool. Your Brother in Christ, Rocky Middleton |

2 | Looking for tools not a debate | 1 Tim 3:2 | rmiddleton | 76065
Sorry, I am still learning the site and did not see the other threads until after I posted. These other posts did not really help me find the answer. This is such an important issue that there has to be an answer in the Bible somewhere. The health of a church is at stake here. I have read around 8 commentaries split pretty evenly on the subject. I do not desire to start a debate, I just was looking for some direction to find the answer. Thanks, Rocky |

3 | Husband of but one wife - Elder? | 1 Tim 3:2 | rmiddleton | 75951
The husband of but one wife??? Does this mean that he can never be married? Or does it mean one wife at a time? What if he is divorced for the Biblical reason (adultery)? Can anyone point me to scriptures to figure this out? Thanks, Rocky |

4 | If you are saved can you lose it | Heb 6:6 | rmiddleton | 75824
Hi all, This issue is only divisive when we "lean on our own understanding" or interpretation. What we need to do is decide to believe the Bible and then find out what it says. There is a clear plan for "making one's call and election sure." That is in II Peter 1:3-11 (NIV) 3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. 10Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, 11and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Also in I John 1:5-10: 5This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. All christians sin - the question is "Do we walk in the light (ie repent(change)) or do we continue in those sins for as Jesus said the verdict is clear:John 3:19-21 19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." Man by nature loves the darkness. God by nature loves the light. There is a spiritual battle going on inside every christian like Paul described in Romans 7. Can we fall away? Seems clear the answer is Yes Can we make our election sure? Again, the clear answer is Yes! We do get to control that part - we do that by obeying God's Word and growing in the graces Peter discussed in the first scripture I quoted above. The key for all of us is to keep studying God's Word and not just hear it but DO IT (James 1:22) In Christ, Rocky |

6 | How Does Baptism Save? | 1 Pet 3:21 | rmiddleton | 75818
Dear Brad, First, have I said how much I like your signature line - Speaking the Truth in Love - that is great - wish I had thought of it first! The greek word used here implies water. My lexicon puts it this way:baptizo bap-tid'-zo from a derivative of bapto; to immerse, submerge; to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism:--Baptist, baptize, wash bapto :bap'-to a primary verb; to whelm, i.e. cover wholly with a fluid; in the New Testament only in a qualified or special sense, i.e. (literally) to moisten (a part of one's person), or (by implication) to stain (as with dye):--dip. Taking these with Jesus' teachings in John 3, Mark 16 and Matthew 28 as well as Peter's teachings in Acts 2 and I Peter and add that to Pauls own conversion story in Acts, BAPTISM IS CLEARLY ESSENTIAL TO SALVATION. It is so essential that in Acts 19, Paul had the people baptized in Jesus name even though they had been baptized under John the Baptist' baptism of repentance(which was taught prior to the DBR of Jesus and thus the new covenant). Hope this helps. Rocky |

7 | How Does Baptism Save? | 1 Pet 3:21 | rmiddleton | 75770
Hi Brad, The first century church translated the tachings that are now Col 2:12,Acts 2,Mark 16,Rom 6,et al to mean water baptism. I personally am not a Bible scholar but all my study has shown me that the baptism in water is required (Water and the Spirit - John 3) Acts 2 - Repentance (which presupposes belief) plus Baptism brings forgiveness of sins plus Holy Spirit. Water baptism is where we participate in the Death,Burial, and the Resurrection of Jesus, meet the Blood of Jesus (which forgives sin) and receive the Holy Spirit Rocky |

8 | How Does Baptism Save? | 1 Pet 3:21 | rmiddleton | 75748
Dear BradK, You would have to explain what you mean by spiritual. Jesus taught Nicodemus that being born again involves water and the Spirit (John 3:1-5). I can find no basis in the Bible for spiritual baptism - If you can point me to some scriptures I will be happy to study them out. Thanks, Rocky |

10 | How Does Baptism Save? | 1 Pet 3:21 | rmiddleton | 75595
Absolutely Col 2 was one of the scriptures I was thinking of this morning. That scriptures makes it clear that baptism is not a work but is required to faithfully obey God (After all, He made everything including the plan of salvation) |

11 | How Does Baptism Save? | 1 Pet 3:21 | rmiddleton | 75592
ABSOLUTELY! Salvation is a gift that cannot be earned or a work of man. It is a work of the Living God and He determined the how's and the why's. If we have any work to do, it is to study the scriptures and OBEY! In Christ, Rocky |

12 | Why did Jesus call this woman a dog? | Mark 7:27 | rmiddleton | 75541
Why did Jesus call this woman a dog? It seems like a racist term. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God and therefore perfect so he could not have sinned. What gives? |

13 | Baptism by water is not necessary | 1 Pet 3:21 | rmiddleton | 75540
Jesus proved again and again that He had the power on earth to forgive sins. There are many examples in the Gospels but he also taught about baptism(Mark 16:15-16). He also prophecied that when he left and the Spirit came, repentance and the forgiveness of sins would be preached. Read Acts 1-4 (all 4 chapters), and Romans 6:1-11 Baptism is where we,By faith in God's power, meet the blood of Jesus and have our sins forgiven. |

Great answer! Here are some more scriptures to help everyone have their own convictions: Mark 16:15-16,Acts 2:36-41,Romans 6:1-11 In Matthew 26:28, Jesus (The Savior) explains that His blood is poured out for the forgiveness of sins --- Jesus blood is what forgives man of his sin. Baptism is where we participate in the Death,Burial and Resurrection and meet the blood of Jesus |
