1 | Who are the heads of the widows? | Eph 5:22 | octoplus | 180482
The answer is straightforward and found in the same verse. You note that the ultimate authority is the Lord. So, even if the husband is still living but asks the wife to do something that is inconsistent to the scriptures (e.g. forced prostitution) the wife reserves the right to refuse. Looking forward, in the absence of any male as the head, then Christ shall head both the widow and divorced parties (both husband and wife). You will note that there is practical difficulty to submit to a church (which consists of many belivers). It is unlikely for the person (after the trauma experience of losing the spouse) to submit to a body of belivers. However the person is strongly encouraged to join a local fellowship for mutual support and encouragement. |

5 | Old and New? | Matt 1:21 | octoplus | 162984
The Old and New testaments are in fact not contradictory. OT is basically the events before the first coming of Jesus (claimed as the messiah) whereas the NT detailed the events that occur after the coming of Jesus. The promise of a Messiah is already envisaged by the prophets in the OT and is confirmed by Jesus himself in the NT. Hence, both parts (OT and NT) are not contradictory but is a continuous and consistent records of God himself and Jesus as the Savior.

8 | the Lord make a distinction between... | Ex 11:7 | octoplus | 156015
The Exodus account is about the hardships faced by the Israelites. The relationship of Israelites as God's people seems to be formalized in Ex 6:6 where God "adopt" Israel as his people - and promises to redeem them from the harsh labor. These "adoption" and "redemption" were first mentioned specifically in Ex. Egyptians on the other hand - are polytheist - and are very different from Israelites. In fact, most of the Exodus talks about the liberation of Israelites from Egypt.

17 | How does God speak today? | Acts 9:4 | octoplus | 142153
in today's context, since we already have the Bible - God can speak directly to us through the Bible. It is the inspired word of God (2 Tim 3:16) and if God wants to speak to us something, it will be very consistent, and this is the experience that I have since becoming a Christian some 20 years back. Also God can speak to us through the preaching (Rom. 10:17). It will be a rewarding experience as we seek God through His word (the Bible).
18 | once saved always saved? | John 5:24 | octoplus | 141015
The principle is found in John 10:28-30 where Jesus confirms that no one can snatch us out of the Father's hand - we are fully secured in Christ once we have trusted Him. Our basis of salvation is based on faith , and not feeling. Another passage to support this is based on John 5:24 - once we believe - we have passed from death to life. The latter refers to our eternal life in God. We are spiritually alive.
19 | how and where to start learning the bibl | John 1:1 | octoplus | 140449
It is very good that you have interest in the Bible. One way is to start off with one of the four gospel in New Testament - Matthew Mark Luke and John. The John book is a very readable book and in your reading , try to learn with a focus or theme, may be Who is Jesus ? And learn to know the Lord himself. The reasons why we start with New testament are that you need not know too much about the historical backgrounds as in Old testament. Another suggestion is that you might consider joining a church (e.g. Anglicans or Methodist) study group. They will be very much of assistance to you. The NIV version is a much simplified version because it uses simple English that you and I speak today. God bless your Christmas |

20 | God's Law vs. Man's Law | 2 John 1:6 | octoplus | 140412
Paul was talking in the context of our relationship with fellowmen which is governed by love. Remember that our Lord had summed up in Mark 12:29-31 the greatest commandment is to love God and second is to love our neighbour - men. You are quite right in that if we can practice "agape" love in our daily life, law will be fulfilled. Law is still there for those who may have wronged, but if we can pratice love (see 1 Pet 4:8) it covers multitudes of sins. we have no fear of the law because in 1 john 4:18 there is no fear in love. ... (see the remaining encouraging verses if you so wishes.......)
