1 Eating meat with blood in it: Gen. 9:4 Gen 9:4 minjackson 111569
I have been searching at least 10 years for a serious answer to this question from Genesis 9:3,4: "Why do we Christians not take seriously the above passage in light of its' context but mostly seem able to accept vs.5,6 as applicable for today. In the age of mad cow disease and it's cause, should we not revisit the implications if God was serious about this as He gave us this meat to enjoy as food? I was told by Meat Inspection in the state I resided in at thet time that "Christians eat anything!" I was told that by law, the only ones who could specify how their meat was slaughtered were the Jews and the Muslims. Prior to the Age of refrigeration,I was told, animals were bled to prevent spoilage, but refrigeration removed that concern and "Animal Rights Groups" who saw the old way of slaughter as inhumane lobbied and won legislation to change the way meat was slaughtered. I love meat, but hate going to the meat counter because the meat is even packaged in its' blood! Thanks for your answer in advance.

Most of the blood of living things is located in the life giving circulatory system. If an animal is strangled the blood cannot escape the carcass. If the animal is stunned in the way chickens are slaughtered with electric charge the heart is shocked out of rhythm and cannot pump blood to evacuate the carcass. If an animal is killed and is cut up and packaged before the heart can empty the blood as is done in most of our slaughter houses in the name of production the circulatory blood will remain in the vessels and meat.
I bought some roosters from the Amish and allowed them to kill and dress them and there was no dark areas around the bones or blood oozing out of every opening as is the case with the store bought chicken.
I enjoy my freedom in Christ and value it. I think Adam and Eve enjoyed their freedom too. Does that one little thou shalt not they were given mean they were under bondage? Thanks much.

Lisa Marie. Thanks for your reply.
I met a farmer in my place of employment who chided me about the terrible tasting chicken we buy from the market which is so called "humanely slaughtered" by law by placing them on wire which is electrically charged and giving them a jolt rendering them unconscious before they are killed. This method of slaughter stops the pumping action of the heart, therefore, the circulatory blood remains in the carcass. See dark areas around the bones of your next chicken and check it out. This extra blood means extra weight at the counter if you think about it.

I found out that the farmers were right.
Until that encounter I thought animals were still slaughtered the way I remembered as a child. The carcass was drained of blood the same day it was slaughtered and the meat had a resting period before we ate it.

The LORD tells us that the life of the flesh is in the blood, Lev 17:11.. and I see his prohibition on eating blood or animal flesh with the lifegiving or circulating blood in it as a way of teaching us to respect the animal's life even though God had given its flesh for human food. Acts 15:29, Gen. 9:3-4, Lev. 17:11-14.
I cannot believe that a culture that can send a man to the moon cannot find a way to kill a cow/hog or whatever and empty the carcass of blood if we wanted to. I'm finding this to be something which grieves my spirit as I try to enjoy the meat God has given us to eat with one request of us. God also had one request of Adam and Eve in the Garden and I don't see that request as legalism. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I see it as a test of obedience.
My spouse was a meat cutter and tells me what I see on or in or around the meat at the meat counter is mostly frank blood. My spouse is not in to biblical stuff, so is unbiased in observing what's happening, and I wonder why we don't see it and do something about it.

I must confess here that I've discovered I am not Shadrach, Meshach, or Abednego. Daniel 1. Those guys could do nothing about their situation. We're in a totally different position in this country. Could it be that the reason our prayers for life to be valued again in this country are not answered because we are not valuing life at the bottom of the chain as evidenced by our unwillingness to honor God's Word in Genesis and Acts.
Sorry, I have not heard of the PETA campaign.
Thanks for answering honestly. It is good to hear and consider your responses.

God started to reveal in Genesis 9:3,4 and expanded upon the revelation in Lev. 17:10 that the life of the flesh is in the blood. These many thousands of years later, we know scientifically that without blood circulating through the circulatory system of our body, you're dead regardless of the condition of your other vital organs.
You can survive for a while without some of the other organs, but nothing survives long without the blood.
I interpret lifeblood as that blood which can be evacuated by a pumping heart.

Thanks for responding. I have spent time in the Kosher meat market simply because I wanted to enjoy eating my meat and found in some cases more blood in some of the meat than was in the regular market. This said to me that because we Christians are so comfortable with our grace, we cause others who know nothing of our grace to violate their consciences. When one tries to overcome the effects of the laws of a land, that sometimes makes them targets of mischief, and I thought someone, i.e. disgruntled worker, was deliberately trying to sabotage what the Kosher meat company was trying to accomplish.

I am not under law, I know, but under grace. If this issue was only about the Leviticus passage, I could accept this as a law/grace issue. Because of the Acts 15:20 and Genesis 9:3,4 passages, I do not see this issue as a law/grace issue. By the way, meat that is properly drained of its' blood content tastes much better than that which is not.
I put this issue in the category of the Genesis 2:16,17 command to our foreparents. They couldn't bear one little prohibition.

I see God subjecting the whole creation to groaning as noted in Romans 8:19-23, because of our sin, and giving us meat to eat is part of that groaning process. It seems to me God is saying to us in Genesis 9:3,4 respect that which gave that animal its' life, its' circulating blood.
Good hearing from you and would love it if you have more to share on the above.
Shaloam.

  Thanks for responding jcsav.
I know there are some groups, or one in particular, which forbid members from receiving certain medical treatments related to blood and the discussion surrounding that.
My new question will be, what is the difference between Genesis 2:15-16 and Genesis 9:3,4? It seems to me that Genesis 2:15,16 was specifically for Adam and Eve in their times. It also seems logical that Genesis 9:3,4 refers to post flood times since the rainbow is still visible in the sky. I am trying to make sense of it all.

Why do we then allow those who make our laws for growing and slaughtering animals to say it is o.k. to feed cattle the blood of other cattle, a practice which the usda just banned because of the mad cow outbreak here caused by infected feed?
The concern as I see it is a new thing since refrigeration. Meat was carefully bled before refrigeration out of necessity to prevent spoilage. Refrigeration is a very good thing; but I don't think we understand some of the changes which have occured in the slaughterhouses since refrigeration that is a direct assault on Genesis 9 if it is still in effect.

It is not a new thing however, that we would second guess the meaning of what God really said.
Therefore, keep the ideas coming!

Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the response and observation. I grew up on a farm and my mom killed the chickens when we did eat one and I still remember the scene. You ate that chicken with an awareness that something had died to fill your hungry belly, and by the way, we didn't have many fat folks around! Maybe the cure for some of our obesity problem is to have everyone slaughter what they have to eat. (smile)
But our God who is the essence of goodness and mercy; as a matter of fact, any sense I have of compassion and mercy come from Him. He is the One who said "Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you:" therefore, being a vegetarian is a choice one can make for himself, but it is not by commandment of God and is not my choice.
I want to see us treat animal and human life with respect by God's definition of what constitutes respect for that life.

I really did not go looking for this question. It found me while I was minding my own business on the job and faithfully talking to and communing with my Heavenly Father. The 2 farmers who set me on this quest did not have a religious agenda. They simply shared this info with me to enhance my appreciation of some good tasting chicken. As evidence of what they were saying, they asked me about the dark areas around chicken bones after it is cooked. I went to the Amish and bought some poultry and had them kill and dress it and there were no dark areas aroung the bones when I cooked that chicken and the taste was outstanding.

I checked with the State Meat Inspection Department and they were the ones who told me why they slaughter the way they do. They also told me that what I saw as blood around the bones was not blood but they could not explain why the darkness, but they maintained that it was not blood around the bone.

When I went to the Kosher Shop some years ago, I was so happy with their chicken that I decided to use their chicken to entertain my guests at an affair. I did not know there was Gentile chicken and Kosher chicken and they sold me some of the bloodiest chicken I've ever seen! I didn't try that shop again and never ordered anything in advance at the other shop either. Their chicken was good and expensive.

Peace to you EdB

Isn't God wonderful to give us choice? Make sure you get a little protein with that salad, but you'd better watch out because they might be putting pastuerized blood as protein in that salad dressing you put on that salad!(smile)

That was meant to be funny, but we do need to be aware of what we are cooking up in the laboratory
of our humanistic society. This whole discussion is about whether we might be sleeping on something that could be very offensive to our God. God's compassion is to every thing He has made, including "Every moving thing that liveth (which) shall be meat for you;" (Gen. 9:3a)if you choose. God said we can eat it but respect that which gives that moving living thing life.

Good hearing from you glory777

We share the Amish area experience. I agree with most of what you say, but since I worked with blood and blood products for years and I also grew up on a farm, I know when i see too much bloody residual to even suspect an animal's circulatory blood has been evacuated. My spouse told me that the speed with which they process animals prevents normal evacuation of blood from the meat, so they vacuum pack it in an effort to try and enhance the removal of the blood.

This is a concern which mainly affects this generation, because as you state, blood spoils readily and will cause spoilage of the meat unless it is refrigerated. People before our time were forced to bleed the meat to prevent spoilage because there was no refrigeration. Refrigeration makes it possible for blood to be stored and also meat containing blood to be stored without concern of spoilage. That is why there is no modern day concern about blood being in a product.

I cooked a chicken just the other day and the blood from the circulatory vessels spilled over into the meat and out into the cooking media. It is unmistakeable. I celebrate when I do get a good tasting, well bled piece of meat.

I am not saying that none of the blood gets evacuated, but I am saying we don't care if it does, and if it doesn't spill out, the chicken will weigh more. More blood, more money!

EdB, when is the last time you have been by the meat counters or cooked some of that stuff without trying to soak the blood out of it?

Thanks EdB
