1 | Unable to speak in tongues. Why? | 1 Cor 14:19 | Ocelot | 197313
Dear jesus1km, I would point you to 1 Corinthians chapter 12. Also, prayerfully read chapter 14. Here are a couple of passages from those chapters that balance out the “tongues” issue. 1 Corinthians 12:28-30 “And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? But earnestly desire the greater gifts…” First of all, did you notice that “tongues” is last on the list of spiritual gifts that God has appointed? Secondly, the last portion of the passage makes it clear that God does not give everyone the same gifts. If He did, you’d have an unbalanced church. In 1 Corinthians 14:19 Paul says “…in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.” If you are going to a church that teaches that you don’t have the Holy Spirit unless you speak in tongues, you’re attending an unbalanced church (at best). You would be of much greater value to your church if you spoke five words that everyone could understand, that would instruct people spiritually, than ten thousand mumbled ramblings. I hope this helps. Ocelot |

3 | Bad things, Good People. Prov 4:10 | Prov 4:10 | Ocelot | 191042
Dear Jeff, I've read the Terms of Use. I'm not quite sure what name calling you're referring to. As far as labeling goes I assume you’re talking about the label “Calvinist”. To be honest, I didn't think they'd mind. If someone labeled me a "Christian" I wouldn't be offended. It seems to me that the individuals on this forum who adhere to the theological idea of predestination set forth by John Calvin (among others) are not ashamed of it (and rightfully so if they truly believe it). But if I have offended anyone by labeling them, I am very sorry. As for divisiveness, my intentions were to make peace. To assure Val that arguing the topic wasn’t going to get her anywhere. I can remember when I was new to the forum and got into a debate or two over predestination. It was very frustrating to have the opposing individuals ignore the obvious scriptural evidence (I’m sure they felt the same way about me). Anyway, I was simply trying to humorously make peace. If, after reading my explanation, you still believe that I was name calling, inappropriately labeling, or being divisive, please let me know and I will recant. Humbly, Dustin |

4 | filthy rags | Is 64:6 | Ocelot | 191007
Greetings Hunger and Thirst, The point of view being expressed here is Isaiah the prophet's. However, since Isaiah is being inspired by God to speak and write these words he is consequently voicing God's point of view. As for the specific filthy rag, I believe that Isaiah's statement here is, at least in part, referencing chapter 61, verse 10, where he says "I will rejoice greatly in the LORD... For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness..." What Isaiah is saying is that any "good works" or "righteous deeds" that we would do to make ourselves more acceptable to God, in contrast to God's awesome righteousness are like dirty rags compared to a beautiful robe. Since it is Christ’s robe of righteousness that saves us from sin, the point is being made that we have absolutely no power to save ourselves. It is only by the grace of God, through Christ’s righteousness that we are able to be saved. Ocelot |

5 | Joseph brother from oldest to youngest | Gen 43:33 | Ocelot | 191005
Dear Auntie, The Bible doesn't specifically tell us why he did this. However, we can see from other parts of the story that Joseph was trying to test his brothers to see if they had turned from their evil ways. I believe that this was just another way for him to psychologically put more stress on them to see if it changed their behavior. He would later do something similar to this when he would have his silver cup put into Benjamin's sack. I hope this helps. Ocelot |

6 | Bad things, Good People. Prov 4:10 | Prov 4:10 | Ocelot | 191002
Dear Val, You will find (or have found) that there are many Calvinists on this forum. Don't let this leave you dismayed. You will also find, if you live long enough and ask the right questions, that there are bugs in chocolate. Nothing is ever as we would like it. I wouldn't waste a whole lot of time arguing this subject if I were you(at least not on this forum). Just know that there are many out there that agree with you, just as there are many out there that disagree with you. Ocelot |

7 | Keep the Sabbath Holy? | Bible general Archive 3 | Ocelot | 191001
Dear Doc, You may find these quotes interesting. "The primitive Christians did keep the Sabbath of the Jews;...therefore the Christians, for a long time together, did keep their conventions upon the Sabbath, in which some portions of the law were read: and this continued till the time of the Laodicean council." "The Whole Works" of Jeremy Taylor, Vol. IX,p. 416 (R. Heber's Edition, Vol XII, p. 416). "The ancient Christians were very careful in the observance of Saturday, or the seventh day...It is plain that all the Oriental churches, and the greatest part of the world, observed the Sabbath as a festival...Athanasius likewise tells us that they held religious assembles on the Sabbath, not because they were infected with Judaism, but to worship Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath, Epiphanius says the same." "Antiquities of the Christian Church," Vol.II Book XX, chap. 3, sec.1, 66. 1137,1138. Ocelot |

8 | Keep the Sabbath Holy? | Bible general Archive 3 | Ocelot | 191000
Just a note: Revelation 1:10 does NOT mention the first day of the week. It does NOT mention the seventh day of the week. It simply says "the Lord's day". We are left to interpret what that means based on scripture. Ocelot |

9 | Keep the Sabbath Holy? | Bible general Archive 3 | Ocelot | 190999
Just an informational note. You said, in regards to the Sabbath: "Be very careful about the SDA doctrines. They are rooted in the teachings of Ellen White..." The Adventist doctrine of The Sabbath was actually impressed upon the Adventist church, who were known as Millerites and were in fact Sunday keepers at the time, by a Seventh-day Baptist lady (not Ellen White), who's name eludes me. At that time, Ellen White was not involved in the leadership of the church. Just some information. Ocelot |

11 | How Elisha destroyed King Ahab? | 2 Kin 9:1 | Ocelot | 180176
Hello Totty, and welcome to the forum. The passage of scripture that you’re looking for is found in the book of 2 Kings. Chapter nine records the destruction of the heirs of Ahab and ends with the violent death of Jezebel. King Ahab’s death actually occurs much earlier in 1 Kings 22:29-40. I hope this helps Ocelot |

Hello TNS978, Welcome to the forum. I may be mistaken, but what you’re talking about sounds like what king Saul tried to do to David in the FIRST book Samuel “… while David was playing the harp with his hand, as usual; and a spear was in Saul's hand. Saul hurled the spear for he thought, "I will pin David to the wall." But David escaped from his presence twice.” 1 Samuel 18:10, 11 “…as he [Saul] was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, and David was playing the harp with his hand. Saul tried to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, so that he stuck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.” I Samuel 19:9, 10 I hope this helps. Ocelot |

16 | Sufism | Not Specified | Ocelot | 176038
Hello my good friends of SBF. I have a dilemma. A “Christian” friend of mine has started calling himself a Sufi. He has tried to convince me on several occasions that he can be both a Christian and a Sufi at the same time. After some investigation, I’m still having trouble understanding what Sufi or Sufism even is. Based on several online encyclopedias it’s a mystical branch of Islam. Yet I’ve read several articles (by Sufis) claiming that Sufism is compatible with Christianity. Anyway, if anyone has any experience with this, I would very much appreciate any info you could give me that could help my friend. Ocelot |

Not to be contrary or anything, but I think it was actually Fredrick Nietzche that said “That which does not kill me makes me stronger.” Ocelot |

19 | Jesus' Instruction to Nicodemus | John 3:14 | Ocelot | 173965
Dear John, I agree that the analogy is quite poor. In fact, no analogy could come close to the Real Thing in any way shape or form. No fable could come remotely close to illustrating the degradation of sin or the incredible wonder of grace. In any case, perhaps now is a good time for me to drop the subject. I hope there are no hard feelings between us. In Christian Love, Ocelot |
