1 | People really lived hundreds of years? | Genesis | Aslans_Friend | 239946
The progressive decline of longevity is a direct result of sin entering the world. There is a book by a Christian geneticist, Dr John Sanford, called "Genetic Entropy and the Mystery of the Genome" which scientifically explains the phenomenon. Yes, they lived longer lives the further you go back, especially before the great flood. |

Thanks, Bill. I see the concept handed down in tradition more than the Pentateuch other than Genesis 3:16 . Clarke's Commentary on the Bible says about this particular passage: Let your women keep silence in the churches - This was a Jewish ordinance; women were not permitted to teach in the assemblies, or even to ask questions. The rabbins taught that "a woman should know nothing but the use of her distaff." And the sayings of Rabbi Eliezer, as delivered, Bammidbar Rabba, sec. 9, fol. 204, are both worthy of remark and of execration; they are these: yisrephu dibrey torah veal yimsaru lenashim, "Let the words of the law be burned, rather than that they should be delivered to women." This was their condition till the time of the Gospel, when, according to the prediction of Joel, the Spirit of God was to be poured out on the women as well as the men, that they might prophesy, i.e. teach. And that they did prophesy or teach is evident from what the apostle says, 1 Corinthians 11:5, where he lays down rules to regulate this part of their conduct while ministering in the church. But does not what the apostle says here contradict that statement, and show that the words in chap. 11 should be understood in another sense? For, here it is expressly said that they should keep silence in the church; for it was not permitted to a woman to speak. Both places seem perfectly consistent. It is evident from the context that the apostle refers here to asking questions, and what we call dictating in the assemblies. It was permitted to any man to ask questions, to object, altercate, attempt to refute, etc., in the synagogue; but this liberty was not allowed to any woman. St. Paul confirms this in reference also to the Christian Church; he orders them to keep silence; and, if they wished to learn any thing, let them inquire of their husbands at home; because it was perfectly indecorous for women to be contending with men in public assemblies, on points of doctrine, cases of conscience, etc. But this by no means intimated that when a woman received any particular influence from God to enable her to teach, that she was not to obey that influence; on the contrary, she was to obey it, and the apostle lays down directions in chap. 11 for regulating her personal appearance when thus employed. All that the apostle opposes here is their questioning, finding fault, disputing, etc., in the Christian Church, as the Jewish men were permitted to do in their synagogues; together with the attempts to usurp any authority over the man, by setting up their judgment in opposition to them; for the apostle has in view, especially, acts of disobedience, arrogance, etc., of which no woman would be guilty who was under the influence of the Spirit of God. But - to be under obedience, as also saith the law - This is a reference to Genesis 3:16 : Thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. From this it is evident that it was the disorderly and disobedient that the apostle had in view; and not any of those on whom God had poured out his Spirit. Thanks for your indulgence. -Jay |

4 | Did Adam have blood before fall? | Lev 17:11 | Aslans_Friend | 230634
Adam had an organic body before the fall, so therefore he had to have the mechanism to supply nourishment and oxygen to his cells. Leviticus 17:11 states that the life of a creature is in the blood. As far as the heavenly body, there is no reference and the corporeal may be maintained by a higher process we cannot imagine. |

5 | Can a person push God too far?? | 1 John 1:9 | Aslans_Friend | 229662
I wasn't arguing a doctrinal position, but I will attempt to justify my position, I guess. 1) "As long as you have breath within you God is willing to forgive you." -God's love is infinite: For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38,39 Back to 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS. Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him. Hebrews 9:27,28 2) The term 'fall from grace' is controversial in the respect that there are different interpretations of Luke 8:13 and Hebrews 6:4-6 Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away.(Luke) For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.(Heb) There are two opposing positions Armenianism and Calvinism Definition for arminianism: 17th century theology (named after its founder Jacobus Arminius) that opposes the absolute predestinarianism of John Calvin and holds that human free will is compatible with God's sovereignty. Here I defer to a Reformed Doctor of Theology and Philosophy, R.C Sproul: CLIP: We need to identify the nature of people who are being warned against falling away in Hebrews. Are they true believers or are they tares growing among the wheat? We must remember that there are three categories of people we are concerned with here. There are: (1) believers, (2) unbelievers in the church, and (3) unbelievers outside of the church. The Book of Hebrews draws special parallels with Old Testament Israel, especially with those in the camp who were apostates. Who are these people in Hebrews? How are they described? Let us list their attributes: 1. once enlightened 2. tasted the heavenly gift 3. partakers of the Holy Spirit. 4. tasted the good Word of God 5. cannot be renewed again to repentance At first glance this list certainly appears to describe true believers. However it may also be describing church members who are not believers, people who have made a false profession of faith. All of these attributes may be possessed by non-believers. The tares that come to church every week hear the Word of God taught and preached and thus are "enlightened." They participate in all of the means of grace. They join in the Lord's Supper. They partake of the Holy Spirit in the sense that they enjoy the nearness of his special immediate presence and his benefits. They have even made a kind of repentance, at least outwardly. The key to Hebrews 6 is found in verse 9. "But.... this manner" Here the author himself notes that he is speaking in an unusual manner. His conclusions differ from those who find here a text for falling away. He concludes with a confidence of better things from the beloved, things that accompany salvation. Obviously falling away does not accompany salvation. The author does not say that any believer actually does fall away. In fact he says the opposite, which he is confident they will not fall away. But if no one falls away, why even bother to warn people against it? t seems frivolous to exhort people to avoid the impossible. Here is where we must understand the relationship of perseverance to preservation. Perseverance is both a grace and a duty. We are to strive with all our might in our spiritual walk. Humanly speaking, it is possible to fall away. Yet as we strive we are to look to God who is preserving us. It is impossible that he should fail to keep us. Consider again the analogy of the child walking with his father. It is possible that the child will let go. If the father is God, it is not possible that he will let go. Even given the promise of the Father not to let go, it is still the duty of the child to hold on tightly. Thus the author of Hebrews warns believers against falling away. Luther called this the "evangelical use of exhortation." It reminds us of our duty to be diligent in our walk with God. :CLIP Although this is quite lengthy, I think it is to the point and reflects a sane interpretation. Thanks! |

6 | Do we obey all of the Ten commandments? | Rom 6:14 | Aslans_Friend | 229651
God gave the Law as a blessing for mankind as it provided a moral framework for social order. It could never be a means for sanctification, an attainable goal to heaven. That could only be provided by God Himself through the atonement of Christ. Jesus told His contemporaries the futility of trying to fulfill the requirement of the law as the Pharisees did, but maintained the laws importance in Matthew 5:16-20 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. |

7 | Can homosexuals receive salvation? | 1 John 1:9 | Aslans_Friend | 229650
Short: All sinners, meaning all men, can receive salvation! Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. SUCH WERE SOME OF YOU; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. 1st Corinthians 6:9-11 Full: The key phase "sincerely repents". As in any breach of trust, it is going to take time to restore relationships to a semblance of what they were, it may not be possible. But God sees the heart and His Holy Spirit can renew His relationship with you with a simple prayer. |

8 | Can a person push God too far?? | 1 John 1:9 | Aslans_Friend | 229649
When you fall from Grace, you don't care any more what the consequences of sin are; you are insensitive. As long as you have breath within you God is willing to forgive you. It is when we tolerate the little foxes in our lives, we ignore the entreaty of the Holy Spirit, that we begin to have callus hearts toward God and will come under judgment. Isaiah 6:8-10 Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!” He said, “Go, and tell this people: ‘Keep on listening, but do not perceive; Keep on looking, but do not understand.’ “Render the hearts of this people insensitive, Their ears dull, And their eyes dim, Otherwise they might see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their hearts, And return and be healed.” And a great exhortation in Hebrews 12 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; 5and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, “MY SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD, NOR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM; 6FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES.” If you have a child, your heart would be tender towards them and it would take a diabolical unrepentant heart of stone before you would disown them. God is much greater in mercy than we can imagine. |

9 | IS BAPTISM IS REQUIRED | Rom 6:3 | Aslans_Friend | 193588
When we became Christians and were baptized to become one with Christ Jesus, we died with him. For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Romans 6:3,4 If, in the earlier baptism, the Holy Spirit gives witness to the fact of a changed life, then I would not expect you to be re-baptised. The bottom line is, obey the Spirit, then you will have peace. |

10 | Whose voice? | Matt 7:21 | Aslans_Friend | 187650
I just ran across an article which is a translation of Martin Luthers "definition of faith" which addresses all aspects of your question, I think. Faith is not what some people think it is. Their human dream is a delusion. Because they observe that faith is not followed by good works or a better life, they fall into error, even though they speak and hear much about faith. "Faith is not enough," they say, "You must do good works, you must be pious to be saved." They think that, when you hear the gospel, you start working, creating by your own strength a thankful heart which says, "I believe." That is what they think true faith is. But, because this is a human idea, a dream, the heart never learns anything from it, so it does nothing and reform doesn't come from this "faith," either. Instead, faith is God's work in us, that changes us and gives new birth from God. (John 1:13). It kills the Old Adam and makes us completely different people. It changes our hearts, our spirits, our thoughts and all our powers. It brings the Holy Spirit with it. Yes, it is a living, creative, active and powerful thing, this faith. Faith cannot help doing good works constantly. It doesn't stop to ask if good works ought to be done, but before anyone asks, it already has done them and continues to do them without ceasing. Anyone who does not do good works in this manner is an unbeliever. He stumbles around and looks for faith and good works, even though he does not know what faith or good works are. Yet he gossips and chatters about faith and good works with many words. Faith is a living, bold trust in God's grace, so certain of God's favor that it would risk death a thousand times trusting in it. Such confidence and knowledge of God's grace makes you happy, joyful and bold in your relationship to God and all creatures. The Holy Spirit makes this happen through faith. Because of it, you freely, willingly and joyfully do good to everyone, serve everyone, suffer all kinds of things, love and praise the God who has shown you such grace. Thus, it is just as impossible to separate faith and works as it is to separate heat and light from fire! Therefore, watch out for your own false ideas and guard against good-for-nothing gossips, who think they're smart enough to define faith and works, but really are the greatest of fools. Ask God to work faith in you, or you will remain forever without faith, no matter what you wish, say or can do. website: http://www.iclnet.org/pub/resources/text/wittenberg/luther/luther-faith.txt |

11 | Saying "AMEN"...outloud? | Deut 27:20 | Aslans_Friend | 187642
I agree with you. When I say "Amen" I am saying "that is certainly true." (It also is a good feedback for the pastor) Perhaps your friend attends a church that is "extremely reserved", and needs deliverance more than encouragement. LOL |

12 | What Am I doing wrong? | Bible general Archive 3 | Aslans_Friend | 187637
Hey, Mouse, I think you are right where you ought to be. Keep studying the word daily with the Holy Spirit to guide you, He won't steer you wrong! Not everyone studies the word in the same way, just as not everyone repairs their auto in the same way. Some like to get their hands greasy and buy their parts wholesale, others are content to exchange their resources with those who have the expertise. As one grows spiritually, they encounter common problems that have plagued the church since its inception. We can fellowship with many who share our fundamental beliefs, but there is a dividing line that no one should cross, as the path leads to error. We need others in the body to keep us on the right path. |

13 | Good Works Equal Born Again? | Matt 7:21 | Aslans_Friend | 187633
Rom 10:8-10 Salvation that comes from trusting Christ-which is the message we preach-is already within easy reach. In fact, the Scriptures say, "The message is close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart." For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. 1) Luke 9:23 Then he said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross DAILY, and follow me. Romans 6:5-11 Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised as he was. Our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. And since we died with Christ, we know we will also share his new life. We are sure of this because Christ rose from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him. He died once to defeat sin, and now he lives for the glory of God. So you should consider yourselves dead to sin and able to live for the glory of God through Christ Jesus. 1 John 1:6-10 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness. We are not living in the truth. But if we are living in the light of God's presence, just as Christ is, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from every sin. If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts. 2) Works are not an issue for being born again. They are an evidence of family integrity and open communication with the head of the family. Hebrews 12:2-11 He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy he knew would be his afterward. Now he is seated in the place of highest honor beside God's throne in heaven. Think about all he endured when sinful people did such terrible things to him, so that you don't become weary and give up. After all, you have not yet given your lives in your struggle against sin. And have you entirely forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you, his children? He said, "My child, don't ignore it when the Lord disciplines you, and don't be discouraged when he corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes those he accepts as his children." As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who was never disciplined? If God doesn't discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children after all. Since we respect our earthly fathers who disciplined us, should we not all the more cheerfully submit to the discipline of our heavenly Father and live forever? For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God's discipline is always right and good for us because it means we will share in his holiness. No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening-it is painful! But afterward there will be a quiet harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. |

14 | Are we something before we were somethin | Is 43:7 | Aslans_Friend | 187631
As I said in my earlier post, I will refrain from citing the website even though it is a free resource of solid teaching by Watchman Nee. Perhaps only 10 percent of the available literature is by Watchman Nee, I admit. My intent was not to offend anyone in my postings, but to enlighten my brothers to the truth of Christ as taught in the Holy Bible. |

15 | Are we something before we were somethin | Is 43:7 | Aslans_Friend | 187630
I agree that some of the teachings of Witness Lee are heretical. From now on, if I quote Watchman Nee, whom I admire as a gifted teacher of truth, I will merely quote the source without reference to the website. To my way of thinking, it is like going to the library. There are many books available to check out. Many are worthless for you to pursue, but it doesn't help you find truth unless you are willing to go there. |

16 | Isdenial of concept of religion legit? | James 1:27 | Aslans_Friend | 187585
What people are saying, I think, is that they don't want to identify with a collection of laws as a disipline leading to acceptance by God, but with a personal relationship with a God who has provided the only Way of salvation. It is just rhetoric that signifies contrarian sentiment. A group bound by similar beliefs by definition is a religion. |

17 | Are we something before we were somethin | Is 43:7 | Aslans_Friend | 187583
We think in the order of time, start to finish. God on the other hand, exists outside of time and space. God knows every event, regardless of cause and effect. He knows the end from the beginning. (Faith changes facts into truth) Genesis 2:7 says, "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." In the beginning, God created the figure of a man with the dust of the earth and then breathed into his nostrils "the breath of life." When the breath of life came in contact with man's body, the soul was produced. The soul is the consummation of man's body and his spirit. This is why the Bible calls man "a living soul." This "breath of life" is man's spirit, the source of man's life. The Lord Jesus tells us that "it is the Spirit who gives life" (John 6:63). This breath of life comes from the Creator. Yet we should not confuse this spirit, which is the "breath of life," with the Holy Spirit of God. There is a difference between the Holy Spirit and the human spirit. Romans 8:16 shows us that the spirit of man is different from the Holy Spirit; the two are not the same. "The Spirit Himself witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God." The word "life" in the expression "the breath of life" is chay; it is plural in number. This tells us that God's breathing produces two lives, a spiritual one and a soulish one. This means that when God's breath of life entered the human body, it became the spirit. At the same time, when this spirit came in contact with the body, it produced the soul. This is the source of the two lives, the spiritual life and the soulish life, within us. The body is the "world-consciousness," the soul is the "self-consciousness," and the spirit is the "God-consciousness." There are five organs in the body which afford man the five senses. This physical body enables man to communicate with the physical world. This is why it is called the "world- consciousness." The soul comprises that part in man known as the intellect, which makes man's existence possible. The part of love generates affections toward other human beings or objects. Affections originate from the senses. All these are parts of man himself; they form the personality of man. Hence, they are called the "self-consciousness." The spirit is the part with which man communicates with God. With this part man worships God, serves Him, and understands his relationship with God. Hence, it is called "God-consciousness." Just as God dwells in the spirit, the self dwells in the soul, and the senses dwell in the body. -THE SPIRITUAL MAN by Watchman Nee. Aailable online at http://www.ministrybooks.com |

18 | Human minds cannot understand | 1 Cor 2:14 | Aslans_Friend | 187582
I don't know of anything specific. The reference in 1 Corinthians 2:14 refers to the difference between spiritual and unspiritual. The passage that comes to me is Isaiah 55:8,9 "My thoughts are completely different from yours," says the Lord. "And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts."
19 | Cannot Satan counterfeit fruit? | Matt 7:21 | Aslans_Friend | 187566
You have to start over. Definition of "genuine believer" : A person who places his trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ, whose sin nature has been crucified with Christ and has been born a new creation to good works in Christ. Note that believer in this sense is NOT one who acknowledges God's existence. No one can be so judged while still alive, since the grace of God is still in operation. That is ultimately between God and the individual, since only God can weigh the heart. |

20 | Christians? | Matt 7:21 | Aslans_Friend | 187332
Matthew 4:17 From then on, Jesus began to preach, "Turn from your sins and turn to God, because the Kingdom of Heaven is near." (New Living Translation) Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (King James Version 1611, 1769) Sins are acts we commit. Sin is the nature imputed to mankind through Adam. Jesus not only died for our sins, the acts we commit that fall short of the glory of God, but for sin, the nature that makes us blind to God's righteousness and our relationship to Him that is now restored through Christ. |
