1 Lying is a sin. Rahab did it for the en, James 2:25 Vintage68 216945
  Hi

Can the lie that Rahab spoke be justified by, the righteous her act?
Can our sin be nullified by, our good deeds?

What makes what Rahab spoke a sin? By what measure do you judge it as such?
Can we be saved, justified, or become righteous, by works, without faith?
James 2:21,26

2 Lying is a sin. Rahab did it for the en, James 2:25 DocTrinsograce 216946
  Hi, Vintage...

In theology this is an area called ethics. The notion of setting aside one command in order to achieve a greater good is called the teleological suspension of the ethical. For example, we are commanded to obey the laws of the land. Thus, we are to obey speed limits. However, if you were hurt, in sudden need of a doctor, I could drive you to the hospital, breaking the speed limit, in order to achieve the good of the end result of your life being saved. This is not the same as the Machiavellian principle of "the end justifies the means." There are other examples of this in Scripture.

In Him, Doc

PS You still owe me an answer from post #216925. It is a very easy question to answer.

  Hi Doc

Will you still love me if I said thank you but no thank you.
Since it is of interest to you, look at my new and improved profile.
Should answer a lot of questions you might have, or it might do just the opposite, causing you to have a few more.

4 Lying is a sin. Rahab did it for the en, James 2:25 DocTrinsograce 216948
  Dear Vintage,

Ah! So the answer must be no, you do not attend a Church of Christ. I am glad you cleared that up. Your doctrine certainly sounds a lot like them, but I'm glad you have disavowed them and their Baptismal Regeneration, etc. By being forthright, it lends credence to what you have to say.

So, you going to let me send you that non-denominational book? Given your mind, I think it would avail you much -- and consequently, the whole Body of Christ.

Hey, Brother Doc, you can send me that book if you like. I would really love to have one! I like to read just about everything I can get my hands on! My birthday's comming up in a couple months too. :-)

Okay, buddy! :-) Your church should add it to their library, too.
7 Lying is a sin. Rahab did it for the en, James 2:25 stjohn 216970
Hey, Doc, I was kidding, you don't have to buy me one. :-)
Just give me the name of it, and I'll get my pastor to buy it for our Church. He's part owner of a Christian book store and can get it at the wholesale price! :-)

8 Lying is a sin. Rahab did it for the en, James 2:25 DocTrinsograce 216972
  Hi, John...

I suspect that your pastor is familiar with the work. It is in its third edition. According to my copy it has sold around 500,000 copies.

How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth
by Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart
Zondervan, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49530
ISBN 0-310-24604-0

It really is pretty basic, very easy to read, at only about 287 pages (including the appendices and index). However, it covers those basics very well. It also exposes the exegetical errors we are all so prone to make, and that we see on the forum so regularly.

When you read it, let me know what you think!

Dear Doc,

Yes, I think he already has one, he has quite a collection of books, and I'm pretty sure I remember him mentioning it. :-)

If not, I'll be sure to ask him to buy one.

It's really been very fortunate and providential for me since I've joined that Church, he's given me quite a few books to read already. Too bad I'm such a slow reader. :-(

Thanks Doc! :-)

John
