  John5:1-9
Why did Jesus ask such a "ridiculous" question? Why the man's response to Jesus in other answer? Why we are difficult to believe we can change?
2 John5:1-9 "Do you want to get well?" John 5:6 Mommapbs 54009
Greetings! It really isn't a ridiculous question, it is one we must all wrestle with. The REAL question is: what are we desperate for?

Jesus knew that this man had positioned himself there for a LONG time. Don't you think if he REALLY wanted to get better he would have devised a WAY to enter the waters?

You see, in his condition, he had to have all his needs met by others, yet it appears from Jesus' question that he had become complacent and comfortable with this "dependency."

Another thing to consider: Jesus might have perceived that the man really didn't believe that the stirring of the waters would heal him. Note how he makes "excuses" for himself in verse 7, as if to say "It's not MY fault." In essence, I think that Jesus was presenting a challenge to his faith.

I recognize that I may reap a firestorm for my statement . . . but this may be an example where Jesus healed to demonstrate that healing is NOT dependent upon man's faith but God's will!

Is your last question "Why is it difficult to believe we can change?"

Frankly, I believe that I cannot change, but God alone CAN and DOES change me!

Blessings, Mommapbs

3 John5:1-9 "Do you want to get well?" John 5:6 lialia1212 54169
Hi mommapbs, thanks for your answer!
The man's respone to Jesus is "i'm trying". The man are unmotived and lie to himselves. Yes i agree that Jesus was presenting a challenge to his faith.
My last question means: Many times, we see what God wants us to do...But we don't believe we can change. So we make up false doctrines-just believe (vs. change)
Interestingly, James2 tells us no change same as no faith!
Sure in God alone can. If we really want to change, we need personal training, tutoring, support groups, motivation.....
Which goes back to Jesus' question to this man..."Do you want to get well?" (NIV)

4 John5:1-9 "Do you want to get well?" John 5:6 Mommapbs 54190
Throughout God's Word we are told to CHANGE the way we THINK and ACT!. Notice what has to be changed first. Obviously, desire is at the root of all directed change. We must believe, as James 1:6-8 exhorts, without wavering! Knowing that I can do nothing on my own does not excuse me from seeking the ONE who is able!

Blessings,

Mommapbs
