Bible Question:
John5:1-9 Why did Jesus ask such a "ridiculous" question? Why the man's response to Jesus in other answer? Why we are difficult to believe we can change? |
Bible Answer: Greetings! It really isn't a ridiculous question, it is one we must all wrestle with. The REAL question is: what are we desperate for? Jesus knew that this man had positioned himself there for a LONG time. Don't you think if he REALLY wanted to get better he would have devised a WAY to enter the waters? You see, in his condition, he had to have all his needs met by others, yet it appears from Jesus' question that he had become complacent and comfortable with this "dependency." Another thing to consider: Jesus might have perceived that the man really didn't believe that the stirring of the waters would heal him. Note how he makes "excuses" for himself in verse 7, as if to say "It's not MY fault." In essence, I think that Jesus was presenting a challenge to his faith. I recognize that I may reap a firestorm for my statement . . . but this may be an example where Jesus healed to demonstrate that healing is NOT dependent upon man's faith but God's will! Is your last question "Why is it difficult to believe we can change?" Frankly, I believe that I cannot change, but God alone CAN and DOES change me! Blessings, Mommapbs |
