941 | who is Theophilus? | Acts 1:1 | prayon | 176800
Greetings Swt413 and welcome to the forum! Theophilus is referred to twice in the bible - Once in Luke 1:3 and again in Acts 1:1. He was a lover of God, a Christian and probably Roman. Luke dedicated both his gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles to him. Because of the fact that Luke referred to him as "most excellent" - the same as he referred to Felix and Festus it is assumed that he was a person of rank - perhaps a Roman officer. Nothing else is known about him. Hope this helps. prayon |

944 | How will Christ return? | Acts 1:9 | prayon | 6810
I don't think that Christ's exit from this world was that unexpected. He had been teaching all along that after He rose He would be seated at the Father's right hand. He also told us that He was going to heaven to prepare a place for us. I do think that His return will be unexpected since He has told us that He will return like a thief in the night and that no one knows the day or the hour. I am expecting something quite awesome in His return. First the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the heavens. We don't know what that sign will be. It could be as loud as the crash of thunder or as quiet as a sleeping baby. I can't find the exact scripture but the bible says that He will "split the eastern sky". It also tells us that the trumpets will sound and that He will arrive on the clouds. I expect that the light from His shikinah glory will be blinding! It should be a quite a dramatic and spectacular appearance! prayon
945 | What is prayer? | Acts 1:14 | prayon | 6024
Prayer is any form of communication with God. It is the primary activity involved in worship. It can be the act of petitioning, praising, giving thanks, complaining, confession, intercession (Psalm 122:6-9), or asking for guidance (Acts12:12-13), wisdom or direction. Prayer can be vocal or silent, individual or corporate. Prayer can be offered at any time or place (Jonah 2:1); the New Testament tells us to pray without ceasing (1Thes. 5:17) Posture for prayer is frequently mentioned in the bible but never in a way to prescribe any particular position, for example kneeling with arms outstretched (1Kings 8:54), head bowed with hands lifted (Neh 8:6, 1Tim 2:8), prostrate (Matt 2:11), standing (Luke 18:11,13). The effects of prayer are numerous. Lives can be changed, protection given, circumstances, attitudes or events changed (Ex 32:9-14, Acts 12.5, Is 38:1-5). We can be given wisdom (James 1:5) or direction. Jesus said in Mark 9:23 "all things can be done for the one who believes". Therefore prayer can accomplish anything. Prayer is always heard by God (Psalm 4:3). Prayer is always answered by God, sometimes He gives us what we pray for and sometimes that answer is no or not yet. |

946 | How did Judas die? | Acts 1:18 | prayon | 8887
Matthew 27:5 said that Judas hung himself yet Acts 1:18 says that he fell and his insides burst open. How did Judas die?
947 | what did he do to be replaced ? | Acts 1:23 | prayon | 125389
Greetings Emmaus, Actually Judas did not hang himself. Strongs tells us that hang also means to choke. So I believe a better way to read this would be Judas was all choked up. Let me explain - First in Acts 1:18 it says "Now Judas purchased a field of blood with the wages of iniquity and falling headlong he burst open and all his insides burst out" (Field of Blood) Field is personal possession Field of blood is a plot of land v. 18 – with reward he got for his wickedness (stealing throughout ministry) v. 19 People called it the field of blood Matt 27:7 calls the piece of land bought with the silver a potter’s field - 2 entirely different places Field of blood is a plot of land Mark 16:14 says that Jesus appeared to the 11 in the upper room butJohn 20 19-*24 – Thomas wasn’t there when Jesus came so Judas had to of been there since they had not chosen a replacement apostle yet. Again in Acts 1:13 it says all 12 went back to the upper room and Judas name is listed as one of them. If he would of indeed ran off and hung himself after he threw the pieces of silver back he could not of been with the 12 in the upper room. I can't remember where I read it but if I remember right hanging wasn't a form of suicide at that time. Judas died by throwing himself off a cliff on his own land which is why it was named Field of Blood. prayon |

948 | what did he do to be replaced ? | Acts 1:23 | prayon | 125416
John 20:19-24 talks about the first visit Jesus made to the apostles in the upper room. Mark 16:14 also talks about the first visit Jesus made to the apostles in the upper room. John says that Thomas was not there. Mark says that he appeared to the 11. Therefore at that one visit the only one missing of the 12 was Thomas therefore Judas was there. Granted it does not say that he jumped off a cliff but he had to of fallen a good distance for his belly to burst open and his insides come out. When one falls a short distance that does not happen ---- Thank God! prayon |

949 | what did he do to be replaced ? | Acts 1:23 | prayon | 125481
Greetings - Both passages are talking about the day that Christ rose. And when Jesus had risen early the first day of the Sabbath, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons (Mar 16:9). After that He appeared in another form to two of them, walking and going into the country (Mar 16:12) and Afterward He appeared to the Eleven as they recline (Mar 16:14) In the John passage it tals about Mary finding the empty tomb and then it says Then the same day at evening, being the first of the sabbaths(Joh 20:19). So both passages talk about the first visit of Jesus to the upper room. If they both didn't refer to the "first of the sabbaths" then it might be quite possible that Mark was talking about a later event. prayon |

951 | Y did they think to fill Judas position? | Acts 1:26 | prayon | 73034
Greetings Creation, The position was filled through the casting of lots. Casting of lots was a way of making of decisions in Bible times. The word “lots” occurs 70 times in the Old Testament and seven in the New Testament. Most of the occurrences were in the early period when little of the Bible was available and when God approved of this means for determining His will (Prov. 16:33). For example, the high priest separated the Scapegoat from the one he sacrificed by casting the lot (Lev. 16:8–10). Various offices and functions in the Temple were also determined by lot (1 Chr. 24:5, 31; 25:8–9; 26:13–14). The sailors on Jonah’s ship (Jon. 1:7) also cast lots to determine who had brought God’s wrath upon their ship. Only once in the New Testament did the casting of lots happen with God’s approval. This occurred in the selection of Matthias to fill the spot vacated by Judas among the apostles (Acts 1:26). After the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2), the casting of lots gradually fell into disfavor because more direct access became available to God’s people in and through the ministry of the Holy Spirit in their lives. In spite of the many references to casting lots in the Old Testament, nothing is known about the actual lots themselves. They could have been sticks of various lengths, flat stones like coins, or some kind of dice. (Nelson’s illustrated Bible dictionary). prayon |

952 | Tongues,where scriptures | Acts 2:1 | prayon | 1369
On the day of Pentecost,as Jesus stated, He sent the Holy Spirit to the disciples. "Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them and rested on each of them. They were at this time filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in tongues. In 1 Cor 14 Paul teaches about the gift of tongues. He states that those who speak in tongues do not talk to others but to God and nobody understands them. (v.2) and that the speech is unintelligible (v.9). In 1Cor.13:1 Paul speaks of talking with the tongues of men and angels which indicates that languages other than the human language may be inspired by the Holy Spirit. Paul also lists tongues as one of the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit (1Cor 12:10). In Mark 16:17, Mark tells us that Jesus gave us a promise - "and those who believe; by using my name will speak in tongues". In Eph 6:18 Paul tells us to pray in the Spirit in every prayer and supplication. In Romans 8:26 - 27 Paul states that "the Spirit helps us in our time of weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we should" and that very Spirit intercedes for the saints with sighs too deep for words." God understands what we don't. In Isaiah 28:11 Isaiah prophesies concerning tongues. He tell us that "He will speak with an alien tongue". |

953 | When was the Holy Spirit first given? | Acts 2:1 | prayon | 2110
It is my understanding that in John 20:21-22 that Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit upon His disciples so that they could carry on His work. At Pentecost the Holy Spirit desended upon ALL bellievers in the form of "divided tongues, as of fire" to fulfill what John the Baptist said about baptizing with fire (Luke 3:16) and what Joel had prophesied in Joel 2:28-29 about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. |
||||||
954 | When was the Holy Spirit first given? | Acts 2:1 | prayon | 2124
Excellent point. Perhaps He needed to give them a taste of the Holy Spirit so they could carry on His work after He ascended into Heaven until the proper time came. To fulfill the prophecy of John the Baptist He still needed to baptize with fire which He did at Pentecost. I tend to agree with your opinion that their empowerment was not complete.
955 | What does the "SPEAKING IN TONGUES MEAN" | Acts 2:4 | prayon | 147863
Greetings Nomi, Speaking in tounges means that you allow the Holy Spirit which lives inside you to speak or pray. You speak in a language which is foreign to you since it is not you that is doing the praying but at the may not be foreign to someone else. Please feel free to ask additonal questions. prayon |

956 | what is the importance of tongues? | Acts 2:4 | prayon | 148122
Greetings, "1Co 14:2 When a person speaks in another language, he doesn't speak to people but to God. No one understands him. His spirit is speaking mysteries. 1Co 14:4a When a person speaks in another language, he helps himself grow. Here are 10 reasons why it is important for every believer should speak in tongues: 1) Tongues is the initial sign of being filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 4) 2) Tongues for Spiritual edification (1Cor 14:4) 3) Tongues reminds us of the Spirit's Indwelling (John 14:16,17) 4) Tonues will keep our prayers in line with God's will (Rom 8:26) 5) Praying in Tongues stimulates faith (Jude 20) 6) Praying in tongues keeps us free from worldly contamination (1Cor 14:28) 7) Praying in tongues enables us to pray for the unknown. (Rom 8:26) 8) Praying in tongues gives us spiritual refreshing (Is 28:11,12) 9) Tongues for giving thanks (1Cor 14:15-17) 10) Speaking in tongues brings the tongue under submission (James 3:8) Hope this helps. I think that the main importance is it draws us into a deeper relationship with God. We let God have a greater control over us when we allow Him to control our tongues. When we pray in tongues we put "us" aside and let "Him". prayon |

957 | what is the importance of tongues? | Acts 2:4 | prayon | 148198
Greetings Kalois, on the first point (Acts 4) you are entirely right. It should of read Acts 2:4... my bad... Jud 1:20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, - Praying in the Holy Ghost (or in the Spirit) is praying in tongues. John 14:16,17 - Is debatable but this is the context I am coming from: Continuing to pray and worship in tongues helps us to be ever conscious of His indwelling presence. If I can be conscious of the indwelling Holy Spirit - as praying in tongues does - it is boind to affect the way I live. Romans 8:26 - At the same time the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we don't know how to pray for what we need. But the Spirit intercedes along with our groans that cannot be expressed in words. P. C. Nelson said that the here literally reads,"The Holy Ghost makes intercession for us in groaning that can not be uttered in articulate speech." Articulate speech means our regular kind of speech. James 3:8 Yielding your tongue to the Holy Spirit to speak with other tongues is a giant step forward fully yielding all of yourself to God, because if you can yield this most unruly part of your body you can yield any part. I hope that makes where I am coming from a little clearer kalos, prayon |

959 | Being filled w/ the Spirit mean tongues? | Acts 2:4 | prayon | 148541
Greetings Searcher, Acts 8:18 it says that Simon "saw" that these people received the Spirit. What did he see that proved to Him that these people received the Spirit? Also there is no Luke 1:41 or 67 - what scripture did you mean? prayon |
||||||
960 | Being filled w/ the Spirit mean tongues? | Acts 2:4 | prayon | 148592
The bible says Simon "saw". We know that the Holy Spirit can not be seen with the physical eye since He is a Spirit. But he "saw" or witnessed the power of speaking in tongues If we look at Acts 19:6. (And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied)and Acts 22:4 (And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance) we know that with the laying on of hands and the receiving of the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost) that they spoke in tongues. So what Simon "saw" was the evidence of the Holy Spirit which is speaking in tongues. prayon ps I agree it would of been much easier if he would of used the word heard instead of saw.... |
