661 | Please explain Isaiah 60 verse 1 | Is 60:1 | Rowdy | 115949
I'm afraid I'm at a loss for words for once. I can't think of a thing to add. I would suggest sticking to the traditional handling of God's Word as it appears whenever possible. But I still wish for God's blessings on your continued study. I'll be interested in seeing what other Forum participants think about this.
662 | What is Love?? | Matt 22:37 | Rowdy | 115946
Now that we understand what you're looking for: To a seven year old child, I would think a good example for him to understand would be for him to be willing to share a single scoop of his favorite ice cream with his new friend whom he just met. It might be emphasized that true love would have to come from within him and not at the direction of his parent or guardian. You could possibly substitute the ice cream with his favorite toy or maybe his favorite posession. Let us know what you finally end up using. God bless you in trying to be a role model for this young one. |

663 | cups? | Luke 22:17 | Rowdy | 115908
In the ancient world (NT age), the ritual of passing around a cup of wine didn't present all the problems with which we deal in this modern world. There really shouldn't be anything wrong with a congregation of the Lord's family partaking from the same cup as is done in some groups. But it does come with some small risks as visitors and strangers come into the midst and might partake BUT they may leave something behind like tobacco juice or some form of disease or bacteria. So the modern practice of dividing the fruit of the vine into a multitude of cups is just a practical matter, just like "church buildings" and song books, the practice of Sunday School for Bible study, which are also not in the Bible. I hope this clears up the controversy, at least a little bit. God bless. |

664 | Please explain Isaiah 60 verse 1 | Is 60:1 | Rowdy | 115907
You have to remember Isaiah was written much in the same way as Daniel and Revelation with a great deal of figurative language. Thus, it is difficult to interpret which portions are to be taken literally and which is figurative. In this case, it looks mostly figurative and I think he's talking about the coming of the Lord's Kingdom in this dispensation after Christianity is established in Jerusalem. But that's my perspective and I'm sure you'll get others. What do you think of this chapter? God bless. |

665 | Were Cornelius and the others saved? | Acts 10:47 | Rowdy | 115898
I can only respond by referring you to my earlier posts numbered 113578 and 115169. You punch them into the QuickSearch, upper right hand corner of your screen to retrieve them. I'm sure you'll get many other replies but remember it's always best to err on the side of caution when it concerns your soul in eternity. God bless. |

666 | What is Love?? | Matt 22:37 | Rowdy | 115897
I have to agree. It's practically impossible to do justice to the definition of love in a Biblical discussion. We could discuss the many different ways Americans abuse love: "I love my pizza and ice cream" and then turn to the most precious person in the world to us and say "I love you too!!" How much more of a dichotomy do we need? Then we could discuss the 3 different words in the Koine Greek language of the Bible for love, each with its own very distinct definition. So I guess the ball is in your court. What particular kind of love are you wishing to discuss? Man's or God's? His is described pretty well, as mentioned in 1 Cor 13. Ours pales in contrast. God bless. PS: The search function to the right of your screen will bring up everything you could possibly want to know about this subject as this has been discussed many times before. |

667 | instuctions on christian living | 1 Cor 4:16 | Rowdy | 115893
I think it's best that you read the entire NT for the most authoritative answer but I think Paul puts it pretty concisely in: 1 Cor 4:14 I am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you, as my dear children. 15Even though you have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. 16Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 17For this reason I am sending to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church. I personally don't think you'll be able to match Paul in his lifestyle but IF by chance you think you're getting close, I'm afraid you'd just have to shoot higher and imitate Christ Himself. God bless. |

668 | what is the meaning of james1:12? | James 1:12 | Rowdy | 115885
Seems pretty straight forward to me. The only portion I can possibly imagine that could be subject to some small controversy would be exactly when do we get God's approval. I would have to say that happens on Judgment Day itself because up until that day, we can always go back and wipe out the good we've done by sinning and not repenting or some other infraction of God's law in the NT. This is made plain in 2 Pet 2:21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22Of them the proverbs are true: "A dog returns to its vomit," and, "A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud." and again by Paul in 1 Cor 9:25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. In both of the passages, the Apostles make it very clear that yes indeed salvation CAN MOST certainly be lost after initial acceptance from our Lord. What do you think this verse means to you and everyone else? God bless. |

669 | who benefits most from prayer? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 115857
I have to agree with EdB. I think we can gain a lot from our example in the Apostle Paul as cited in the following: 2 Cor 12:6 Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say. 7To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. With all the tremendous good things Paul did AND the tremendous sacrifices he made to be a christian, I would think he above all other humans on this planet since his lifetime would have deserved some relief but the Lord didn't see fit to give it to him. Whenever I read these words I shrink with embarrassment at my feeble attempts to be a christian. Also I tend to complain about the tiny "thorns" in my life just like everyone else in the world. ALL of us should feel ashamed. We should be just thankful to be alive and well in such a country as this with all the freedoms and blessings we enjoy. I hope this gives you comfort and God bless. |

670 | Why do we sin? | Rom 7:15 | Rowdy | 115832
In addition to Emmanus good response, I'd add these verses from: James 1:12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. After reading and analyzing all of these and those as quoted by Emmanus, we have to assume that the average person chooses to sin because they have determined to go ahead and take a chance that they will have time to repent and get forgiveness before dying or meeting Jeseus in Judgment. What would be your thoughts on the matter? God bless. |

671 | Rom. 12:1-3 | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 115829
In my mind, the only real way we can renew ourselves every day is to spend more and more of our time in God's Word. In this way, God will help us transform our thinking and our priorities into His thoughts and priorities. And of course, we'll be better prepared to fend off the temptations to sin. What do you think? And God bless.
672 | Just brainstorming. Any lightning? | 1 Cor 2:2 | Rowdy | 115823
I'm not there yet but I understand it's a wonderful feeling when we can say like Paul, "to die is gain but to live is Christ." My father talks like that now. He's lived a full life, most of it in the Kingdom and is looking forward to going Home to his maker.
673 | birth of the antichrists | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 115788
Following is every verse in the Bible on the subject: 1 John 2:18 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. 1 John 2:22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 1 John 4:3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world. 2 John 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. I must admit, even after studying the context of each verse, it's still difficult to conjure up a reason. The only one I can possibly propose would be that this is merely another form of the devil and his clever schemes to deceive humans into his kingdom of unbelievers instead of God's Kingdom. This constant contrast is one of the major themes throughout the Bible and portrays the wonderful majesty and patience of our God in Heaven. It is interesting to note that the Apostle John thought the coming of the antichrist was VERY quickly approaching vs. his later arrival (sometime in our future) as theorized by so many. What reason can you propose? God bless. |

674 | Searching for the truth | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 115786
It matters most of all to the person who perpatrated the wrong. Please notice that Saul (later Apostle Paul) honestly thought he was doing correctly in persecuting and killing christians but the Lord Himself had to set him straight. Makes you wonder about some of the sincere conclusions we all come to in our minds. That's one reason why I love this Forum. Even the best minds like those with as much education as Saul need an ocassional humbling. If you don't get an occasional humbling from either God or His children, I'd have to say you're not active enough in His Kingdom. It's the human way of survival of the fittest in the animal kingdom. But back to your question. If one of God's children doesn't repent to the one whom he has wronged, he faces Judgment Day in dire straits. Also, I would like to think the relationship can be healed and the bond between the two can be increased and made even better after repentance and forgiveness is exchanged. But in the final analysis, like you've alluded to, we all must adopt an attitude of forgiveness and go on about our lives of shining God's light through our lives here on earth. God bless you for seeing this higher priority with our Father. |

675 | What is the "reward" ? | Mark 9:41 | Rowdy | 115763
I have to agree with you as I have spent several years overseas, 4 in Athens, Greece and another 4 in Okinawa, Japan with my family. When you spend that much time in one country, one really "soaks up" a lot more culture. We have sooo much to be thankful for in this country and the worst tragedy is we're letting it slip away from us, right before our eyes. I worry about what we're leaving to the next several generations of Americans. This is one of the reasons I encourage especially the young people in my world to think about joining the military and see the world, then come home to American and re-appreciate what we have here. I do think the devil is incredibly clever and comes up with the perfect temptations for the different cultures, countries and yes even the different generations. I think he knows the fralities and weaknesses of the us humans and can fine tune his temptations so the only way we can possibly fend off ALL of them is with God's help. The bottom line in response to your comment: Most Americans (including me) don't have a clue what the majority of the world outside the US goes through to gain just a small portion of Godliness or Christianity. I do know most of those folks do put their lives in EXTREME jeporady when they do pursue such a lifestyle. Again, I'll thank God in a public way for my being an American as well as my family. God bless. |

676 | is consulting medium allowed allowed? | 1 Samuel | Rowdy | 115757
I'd like to add another note that just came to me. I thought of this in re-reading the discussions/posts from Kalos on this subject. I think the comparison between OT and the NT can be compared to a dead body vs. a live body. We all know the OT was nailed to the cross with Jesus as made clear in the following: Col 2:13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. This doesn't mean Christ destroyed the Law of Moses or any other part of the OT. It merely means He took with him its authority to rule our lives as God's children. But just as a dead man is available for autopsy for medical purposes, etc, the OT can be taken out of its tomb and examined for our benefit. It shows us how the world got here and how God dealt with the world, especially His beloved Israelite nation. It's a wonderfully made document and should be treated as such but it can't take the place of the NT as Jesus provides a whole new law, one with vast liberties and completely perfect freedom from our sins. As such the authority in the NT is complete because Jesus has been given "all authority" as cited in Matt 28 and He delegated that authority to His official representatives, the Apostles. This is made plain in: Matt 18:18 "I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, back to the dead man/live man contrast. Now we have a living, vibrant, active and powerful covenant (body of laws) with the most powerful force in the entire universe. If we abide by His Words and live our lives accordingly to the best of our ability AND put our faith in His Son's blood and grace, we'll see Heaven upon Judgment Day, just as He's promised. Hope this clears up some ambiguities in my earlier posts. God bless. |

677 | Word Study ... done away - cease | 1 Cor 13:8 | Rowdy | 115752
Sorry, I wasn't clear with my statement. In that post I was referring to whole package of empowerment received by the Apostles from the Holy Spirit upon the first day the church was established. I realize there's a wide debate about whether these powers exist in today's world. To me, this verse is very clear about the Bible being completely perfect and no need for miraculous powers in this present world. My main goal was to see if we could some kind of consensus on the Forum as to just what is a mircle? What does it mean to prophecy? And speaking in tongues? I would suggest that we stick with the Bible definitions for these activities. What do you think? God bless. |

679 | is consulting medium allowed allowed? | 1 Samuel | Rowdy | 115748
I can only quote from the Bible as follows: 1 Sam 15:21 The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal." 22 But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD ? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD , he has rejected you as king." Regardless if a person is a king of a country or the lowliest servant in the land, when he/she thinks about deverting from God's guidance and chooses his own path, it always ends up this way. You see our ways as humans are not God's way as cited in... Prov 14:11 The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish. 12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. You can never go wrong by following God's Word, especially if you give special emphasis/preference for the NT as the authority for the OT was nailed to the cross with Jesus. God bless. |

680 | Money - the answer for everything? | Ecclesiastes | Rowdy | 115655
Certain portions of this book should be read as being sarcastic. Solomon was a great man and had great wisdom but I'm afraid he let his lifestyle get in his way, between himself and his God. Sometimes he wrote verses from the standpoint of the common man and the way they would like to run the world...wouldn't we all? But alas we come back to reality as does Solomon in the final chapter.
