621 | But do we have to sin? | Job 1:21 | Rowdy | 117638
I appreciate your comment. Mine was headed in that direction and I think I was really thinking of your scripture for it seems to be a little more directed to the question at hand. The whole book of Romans is really a fine work of art by the Apostle Paul. But it does get a little deep in some places. Bless you dear friend. Like I say, I appreciate your backing me up with a better, more applicable scripture.
622 | But do we have to sin? | Job 1:21 | Rowdy | 117624
Paul deals with this kind of thinking as follows Rom 3:5 But if our unrighteousness brings out God's righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) 6Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? 7Someone might argue, "If my falsehood enhances God's truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?" 8Why not say--as we are being slanderously reported as saying and as some claim that we say--"Let us do evil that good may result"? Their condemnation is deserved. Let no one be deceived. God is not mocked. We will most definitely pay for our sins in this world and reap the full consequences UNLESS we've got the blood of Jesus to cover our sins AND we're sincerely trying our best to live a christian life every day. God bless. --Rowdy |

623 | problem with cause and allow | Job 1:21 | Rowdy | 117617
But you seem to miss my point: we are the children to God and in spite of His Words of warning about sin, we continue commit sins and leave undone those acts of good and kindness we should be doing. Yes indeed, God allows sin and evil, the devil and all the other bad stuff to exist in the world because it shows off His glory all the more. Just like you can't have and wouldn't enjoy sunshine without rain, you and I really wouldn't enjoy an eternal home here on earth without this knowledge of flesh, the physical, the finite. Our physical world is totally incompatible with God's spiritual world outside of His one exception: the temporary combination of our human body with the soul He's given to each of us. Remember as far as my son was concerned I was responsible because I could have prevented the injury. But I knew he could handle it and I wanted him to grow and realize he must handle an ocassional pain in this world. But most important, I knew he needed to learn how to avoid these kind of pains. For the same reason, we took him and his brother to worship with us so he could develop his own relationship with God. You might also remember God doesn't have any grandchildren. Only His own beloved children will graduate to His Home we have waiting for us. God bless. --Rowdy |

624 | Elder meetings? Open or clsed? Prf txt? | Acts 20:17 | Rowdy | 117616
I don't think there is any specific guidance as to how the elders should conduct their meetings so their style of meetings apparently has been established over the centuries. The only scripture I can possibly think might apply would be the one about the golden rule. So, the elders would wisely choose to have an open meeting with the whole congregation to discuss those topics that apply to the whole and those private matters need to be discussed in private with only the parties actually involved. At least, that's the way it's done where we're members. What do you think? God bless. |

625 | Bible version can become an idol? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 117615
My only response would be to refer to the same ole analogy about the way we handle a person's Last Will and Testament. As you know, when a person dies and leaves such a document for the execuator to execute, he MUST do so in accordance with those terms and conditions in the will. When the recipient complies and meets those requirements he FULFILLS those terms and conditions. Now of course this has always been discussed from our perspective in our compliance and receiving the gift of salvation to mankind. But another in scenario 2,000 years ago, Christ FULFILLED His Father's Will. And just like in this world of ours, after a person fulfills the will in question, the will is done, thus Christ's Words "It is finished." God's first dispensation was done, it was fulfilled. His Son had met His Father's requirement of one human being living the perfect and sinless life AND became the perfect sacrifice for all mankind AND became the perfect example for mankind to model after and imitate. But my main point here is: The OT was fulfilled and thus has no authority in governing our lives. IF it did we would all still be required to offer up sacrifices of animals at least every week. We would all be required to have all christians circumcised and we all know what Paul says about that subject. No, my friend the burdensome rules, regulations and ordinances of the OT have no place in our spiritual relationship with God because it been FULFILLED by His Son as the perfect sacrifice. Remember fulfillment of a will puts a wrap on it and it's tucked away in some dusty bin in some court appointed drawer somewhere. Its authority is no more. BUT it can be extracted now and again for study or analysis. The best thing about all this is the better covenant we have with better promises and a much better High Priest, Christ Himself. Another wonderful side benefit, Christ sees Himself as our senior Brother. He's willing to cover our sins and vouch for us when we get to Heaven IF we've been faithful. I hope this clears up the full meaning of this controversy for you and God bless. --Rowdy |

626 | Bible version can become an idol? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 117614
I can only quote back to you the scriptures I've referring to all along and those are Heb 8 and Col 2:13-15. I realize the verses you're referring to above speak to the whole Bible but you haven't responded to these verses I've just cited so how do YOU reconcile these positions especially since they came from the same author, writer of these epistles? I would also cite John 12:47 And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him--the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 49For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. and Matt 28:18. Like I've mentioned before, the best parts of the OT is repeated in the NT, but notice there are significant and large portions of the OT left out because they don't apply, i.e. Sabbath day and the generous handling of divorce to men from the OT. I'm also hoping to see your response to the rest of my post no 117575. I'd like to see what other Forum participants think about these subjects. God bless. --Rowdy |

628 | Bible version can become an idol? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 117588
This response is submitted to both you and Kalos. For some reason you and he seem to think that I'm advocating literally deleting the OT from the Bible. I could no more do that than I could cut off my right arm. I appreciate so very much the tremendous value of the OT. It gives us the background to better understand the NT. Without the OT, the NT would be almost useless except for merely meeting the terms and condition of salvation. Without the OT, we wouldn't know and appreciate the tremendous amount of pain, suffering and planning our Father put into his mystery, His Plan of Salvation, the main theme throughout the OT. Without the OT, we wouldn't know and appreciate all of what God's family of Jews went through in their long journey, from the wonderful followership of Joshua's and Kavid's lead to plumb the very depths of disobedience with a multitude of badly chosen kings. You see, the most wonderful thing we humans are to learn from the OT is that God will love us forever, even when we're at our worst...yes even when we follow the lead of our Jewish ancestors. Our God in the form of His Son went to Hell itself to save you and me. So, please believe me as I've said before the OT is incredibly valuable to us as christians BUT it has no authority in our lives. It's a dead body of laws which is a wonderful item for our study and reference. We must keeep the OT in perspective. We'll be judged by the words of the NT as comissioned by the Lord and His official representatives. Again, the OT is a wonderful source for confirmation of the NT BUT when the OT shows an inferior standard in contrast, the NT MUST be adhered to. This is NOT a contradiction. This IS what God intended to happen. He was educating all of mankind with the OT and its 600 plus ordinances. Now He wants us all to graduate and learn to prefer His spiritual world instead of this physical one. He wants us to figure most of the details of this modern dispensation by using our minds and infer when we need to from His Word. Just like we prefer our kids to grow up and learn to mature and figure out their world without specifying each little step to reach their own goals. I do hope this is clear. God bless. |

You bring up a very good point which makes my point a little clearer. One of the 10 commandments was to make the Sabbath holy which goes in direct opposition to the NT command by example of worship assembly on the "first day of the week." This is just one of the contrasts as was mentioned earlier in my previous post. In contrast to the command Not to Murder, we are to adhere to a higher standard and forgive our enemies, even when the enemy doesn't ask for forgiveness. Like I mentioned before, God wants us as His children to graduate from the 600 plus ordinances of the OT and move on to the Law of Liberty with Christ as the High Priest. Again, I must ask: Do you have specific scriputures directly opposing the scriptures I used to support my previous posts. Please be sure they specifically counter the main point of each scripture. God bless. |

630 | Gods view of David vs. Saul | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 117575
Hank, I must admit you really do give a whole new depth to the expression "trying the patience of Job." I've issued some really fine challenges, well supported with scriptures and you ignore them. I've explained in great detail why I respond to these kind of questions asking "why" and yet you insist on scriptures when it should be obvious to any really serious Bible student there ISN'T any. So, once again I issue yet another challenge. The human side is peaking out in me but I must ask do you have the courage and love for people's souls to give up your pride? My challenge: 1) How about if you come up with specific scriptures in direct opposition with the points I've made on this thread? 2) How about if you come up with an opposing position showing "God's view of David vs. Saul" with scriptures to support your statement? Finally 3) Take another look at the previous challenges mentioned earlier, the ones I issued with supportive scriptures and respond with your opposing position(s) with scriptures to support them. I do want to try to do right by you and my fellow Forum members and issue these challenges in a spirit of love and devotion to God. And the best thing is that God gets the glory. So what do you say? Regardless of you response, I still pray for God to bless you. |

631 | Job 1:21 why does he refer to God here w | Job 1:21 | Rowdy | 117556
You might say that Job knew instinctively what was going on just as we do when we sit and think about all the evil, pain and suffering in the world. All that bad stuff is in the world as a result of our sinful nature but it's true like Job says. The Lord does give and He does take away just like it is with a small child in our homes as parents. In that home a small 2 or 3 year old child explores his/her world and is facinated with all the many fun things to do like touch a hot stove and stick one's finger in an electrical socket. The child experiences pain and as far as they are concerned, we the parent are responsible for indeed we are. After being a parent and rearing our two sons, I can share my experiences. One time when my son was 4 years old, I was mowing the lawn in the back where our metal swing set was and he was playing. I continued my circle around the yard while he continued to run at the swing and push it in front of him to have it fall behind him. Yes, I knew what would happen but my wife and I agreed to "allow him to experience the lesson if he could endure the little bit of pain." Yes, the swing eventually hit him in the back of the head. He came to me crying at which I held him until he stopped crying. Being a carbon copy of his old man, he went back to doing the same thing with the same swing. Yeah, we're both pretty stubborn but that day he taught me something. Our God created us to be tough enough to withstand the pain and suffering of this world, hoping that we'll realize that He's got something far better for us at His House. But we've got to give up our addiction for this finite, physical world and learn to prefer His World of the infinite and spiritual. God wants us to read ALL of His Words, including Job and graduate to His World of the spiritual, heavenly things. One more small point: we MUST let God choose when we get to move on from this world to the next. Good question and God bless. |

Your analogy is cute but it's not quite right. You see in football, the QB and the WR are integral parts throughout the game. A more appropriate contrast is the playoffs vs. the superbowl. God laid the groundwork during the OT era or dispensation whereas he transferred the whole ballgame to His Son and let Him take over the ruling, terms and conditions of the superbowl, this timeframe and dispensation. Thus instead of a levitical priesthood with imperfect sacrifices, we have the Perfect High Priest with whom we can approach His Father directly. (We couldn't do that before Christ's coming.) Now during this dispensation, we have elders and deacons taking over the actual government of the church here and now on earth. All people, including us Gentiles as well as Jews can now be christians. I appreciate your reference to Hebrews for indeed this is all made very plain in Heb 8:1 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man. 3For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. 4For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; 5who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, "See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain." 6But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. Again, let me say the OT is an absolutely VITAL part of the Bible and God's Word but whereas God put mankind through school and taught him what it is to sin, now he expects us to grow up and graduate and tackle the tougher topics without the specific dos and don'ts of the OT. He's expecting us to figure out the parts left unsaid in His Son's Last Will and Testament (NT). Do you have specific scriptures in the NT to counter those specific scriptures I've used in these two posts? God bless you in your study. |

633 | Bible version can become an idol? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 117549
Study the whole Bible and you should clearly see that God has given this dispensation of Godliness over to His Son. I agree with Kalos in that God's Word most certainly DOES NOT contradict itself but He does expect us to "graduate" from the Law of Moses and the OT as shown in Col 2:13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Matt 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. 17When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. The main theme throughout the Book of Hebrews is the superiority of this Law of Liberty as provided in the NT compared to that in the OT. This contrast is discussed briefly by Jesus in Mark 10:1 Then He arose from there and came to the region of Judea by the other side of the Jordan. And multitudes gathered to Him again, and as He was accustomed, He taught them again. 2The Pharisees came and asked Him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" testing Him. 3And He answered and said to them, "What did Moses command you?" 4They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss her." 5And Jesus answered and said to them, "Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. 6But from the beginning of the creation, God "made them male and female.' 7"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8and the two shall become one flesh'; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." 10In the house His disciples also asked Him again about the same matter. 11So He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." We all know about the contrast about vengence with "eye for an eye and tooth for tooth" in the OT, but Jesus says forgive your neighbor and bless them that curse you. Kalos or anyone else...how do you reconcile these scriptures with your insistance that the OT is still applicable to us today?? There's just no way this position can be defended IF you consider the WHOLE Bible on this subject. I do hope and pray you'll reconsider but I also pray God will bless you with an open mind. |

634 | Gods view of David vs. Saul | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 117539
Personally, I think it was because David's heart was more in tune with God's heart. Whereas Saul showed himself to be very shallow and not very committed. Probably his height and good looks got him what he wanted through his life, whereas David was humble, both in statue and with a "ruddy complexion." Whatever the reasons, we need to follow David's example and keep our heart and attitude humble and submissive to God.
635 | Purpose in Ecclesiastes and Jeremiah | Eccl 3:1 | Rowdy | 117528
I like to think of all the lives that live on this planet now, as well as the past and present as God's mosaic. Each one of us has a very specific purpose in this mosaic. Our lives might be rather quiet and reserve or they might be loud and haughty. We might not have a relationship with God at all or hopefully we allow God's light to shine through our lives, our words and our ever action. It's all up to us just as in our Lord's parable about men with various talents. We all have great potential and can be whatever we choose to be. To benefit most from this perspective, we must allow the Lord be the Potter and we the clay. We should study His Word every day and be in a constant state of mind given to prayer. All we do must be seen to hold up our small portion of that mosaic and all the worries and burdens of the world should be given over to Him instead of our "obsessing" with them. Thank God for His Grace and love...He's even anxious to forgive if we'll just ask. Good question and God bless. |

636 | Bible version can become an idol? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 117520
There is some tendancy for some folks to "fall in love" with a particular version like you're seeing in these posts. And there's nothing wrong with that idea as long as it's a simple preference for a particular version as Hank mentions. However, there is a potential danger as has been mentioned also. ALL current versions of the Bible have come to us as translations prepared by men and should be treated as such. All men are human and make an ocassional mistake when translating. Most of these errors are minor and have to do with the grammatical changes when translating from one language to another. I do think it's significant enough to emphasize that the Lord did protect the overall message of His Word BUT He didn't see fit to protect an indestructible copy of the original "autograph" version of each book of the Bible. If He had it would undoubtedly have turned into an idol as your question suggests. That's exactly the kind of thinking our Lord wants us to avoid. He wants us to internalize His Words into our hearts and minds so we live our lives as living monuments to His glory. But in order to come to a common understanding of just what does His Word have for us in specific guidance, we must go back to the translations we have. The three you've cited in your question is a good start for all christian's libraries but I would suggest adding the NKJV. Most all modern translations are fairly good but they all must be approached with some caution as they are prepared by men, usually several dozen men coming from a wide variety of faiths and denominations. The bottom line is to keep an open mind, study constantly with the resolve to see what all God's Word has to say on any one topic. One more caution: we must maintain perspective with the issue of the Old Testament and the New Testament. When we see an obvious conflict like marriage and divorce contrasted by the two, we must allow the NT to "outrank" the OT, as Jesus took the OT to the cross with him because He fulfilled it. The Law of Moses and the OT has no authority to guide us in our spiritual relationship. HOWEVER, the OT is an incredibly valuable document for study and understanding the NT. God bless. |

637 | Holy man disobeying God | 1 Samuel | Rowdy | 117517
Eli's sons, Nadab and Abihu are the ones for which you're looking. If you'll put the their names in the search engine to the right of your screen, you'll get several different verses. The sum total story tells all their sins which were many and grievous to the Lord. He was being quite gracious and patient with them but they just went too far. God bless.
638 | why does god require sacrafices | Rom 6:23 | Rowdy | 117473
You've gotten several good comments from several good Bible students but I'd just like to add my two cents' worth. Our God created you, me and the rest of the world for the purpose of our being a glory to Him, as the Creator. But He only gets this glory IF we actually make that choice since He gives us the freedom to turn Him down. Our God desparately craves the love and devotion of His creation but He graciously gives us that freedom to submit to Him or rebel and follow our own way. This simple choice between His way or our way has been one of the main themes throughout His Word, our Bible. With reference to the "hardening of Pharoah's heart," that has been a tough subject for many Bible students. In my opinion, God was using the Pharoah's condition to make a world-class showdown between Himself and the most powerful nation then known in the world. Pharoah had already shown he would never repent regardless of ANY gesture from God. So God used the 10 plagues in a very specific way, every one of them in a direct put-down to the various gods of Egypt. This showdown by the Lord needed the Pharoah to be very hard-hearted and not submit to Moses' demands. Again, I should mention there was no hope for Pharoah. He was headed for one single place but God used him just as He uses all the rest of His creation to get His message love AND majesty to us as His children. Good question and God bless. |

639 | The Church's response to Active Sin | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 116356
In the scripture above, homosexuality just happened to be the sin being dealt with at the moment. A christian should NEVER feel comfortable commiting a habit of sin time and time again without any real intention of repenting and turning away from that sin. With that FACT in mind, we should always feel free to "be our brother's (or our sister's) keeper" and approach them about the sin in their life in private. We find this is the procedure to follow in Matt 18:15-17. Of course, this MUST be done with love and genuine concern for the soul of the sinner. This is absolutely paramount, so important that if you can't do it, you MUST pray about it long and hard and God will help you through it. But if you love this individual enough and want to take him/her to Heaven with you, you will find a way. A wonderful side benefit is the bond between you will increase exponentially if you're successful. And you'll be known as a peacemaker AND bringing back a sinner to God "cover a multitude of sins" in accordance with James 5:20. God bless you for caring enough to ask. I pray that you'll follow through and restore your dear friend. |
