961 | What is an apostate? | 2 Thess 2:3 | New Creature | 167035
In a Christian sense, and apostate One who has abandoned one's religious faith Apostasy; Apostate apostasiìa, “a standing away from”): I.e. a falling away, a withdrawal, a defection. Not found in the English Versions of the Bible, but used twice in the New Testament, in the Greek original, to express abandonment of the faith. Paul was falsely accused of teaching the Jews apostasy from Moses (Acts 21:21); he predicted the great apostasy from Christianity, foretold by Jesus (Mat 24:10-12) which would precede “the day of the Lord” (2Th 2:2). Apostasy, not in name but in fact, meets scathing rebuke in the Epistle of Jude, e.g. the apostasy of angels (Jude 1:6). Foretold, with warnings, as sure to abound in the latter days (1Ti 4:1-3; 2Th 2:3; 2Pe 3:17). Causes of: persecution (Mat 24:9, Mat 24:10); false teachers (Mat 24:11); temptation (Luk 8:13); worldliness (2Ti 4:4); defective knowledge of Christ (1Jo 2:19); moral lapse (Heb 6:4-6); forsaking worship and spiritual living (Heb_10:25-31); unbelief (Heb 3:12). Biblical examples: Saul (1Sa 15:11); Amaziah (2Ch 25:14, 2Ch 25:27); many disciples (Joh 6:66); Hymeneus and Alexander (1Ti 1:19, 1Ti 1:20); Demas (2Ti 4:10). For further illustration see Deu 13:13; Zep 1:4-6; Gal 5:4; 2Pe 2:20, 2Pe 2:21. “Forsaking Yahweh” was the characteristic and oft-recurring sin of the chosen people, especially in their contact with idolatrous nations. It constituted their supreme national peril. The tendency appeared in their earliest history, as abundantly seen in the warnings and prohibitions of the laws of Moses (Exo_20:3, Exo_20:4, Exo_20:23; Deu_6:14; Deu_11:16). The fearful consequences of religious and moral apostasy appear in the curses pronounced against this sin, on Mount Ebal, by the representatives of six of the tribes of Israel, elected by Moses (Deu_27:13-26; 28:15-68). So wayward was the heart of Israel, even in the years immediately following the national emancipation, in the wilderness, that Joshua found it necessary to re-pledge the entire nation to a new fidelity to Yahweh and to their original covenant before they were permitted to enter the Promised Land (Josh 24:1-28). Infidelity to this covenant blighted the nation's prospects and growth during the time of the Judges (Jdg_2:11-15; Jdg_10:6, Jdg_10:10, Jdg_10:13; 1Sa_12:10). It was the cause of prolific and ever-increasing evil, civic and moral, from Solomon's day to the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities. Many of the kings of the divided kingdom apostatized, leading the people, as in the case of Rehoboam, into the grossest forms of idolatry and immorality (1Ki_14:22-24; 2Ch_12:1). Conspicuous examples of such royal apostasy are Jeroboam (1Ki_12:28-32); Ahab (1Ki_16:30-33); Ahaziah (1Ki_22:51-53); Jehoram (2Ch_21:6, 2Ch_21:10, 2Ch_21:12-15); Ahaz (2Ch_28:1-4); Manasseh (2Ch_33:1-9); Amen (2Ch_33:22). See IDOLATRY. Prophecy originated as a Divine and imperative protest against this historic tendency to defection from the religion of Yahweh. In classical Greek, apostasy signified revolt from a military commander. In the roman catholic church it denotes abandonment of religious orders; renunciation of ecclesiastical authority; defection from the faith. The persecutions of the early Christian centuries forced many to deny Christian discipleship and to signify their apostasy by offering incense to a heathen deity or blaspheming the name of Christ. The emperor Julian, who probably never vitally embraced the Christian faith, is known in history as “the Apostate,” having renounced Christianity for paganism soon after his accession to the throne. An apostate's defection from the faith may be intellectual, as in the case of Ernst Haeckel, who, because of his materialistic philosophy, publicly and formally renounced Christianity and the church; or it may be moral and spiritual, as with Judas, who for filthy lucre's sake basely betrayed his Lord. See exhaustive articles on “Apostasy” in the Jewish Encyclopedia. (ISBE) |

Ezek. 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Hi cuddle 2 Thess 2:7 For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way. Until the restrainer be taken away. The "he" of this verse refers to the restrainer. katecho Thayer Definition: 1) to hold back, detain, retain 1b1) that which hinders, Antichrist from making his appearance He that hinders the Antichrist from making his appearance could not be referring to anyone else but the Holy Spirit under my current understanding of this verse. 966 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | New Creature | 180981
Hi Cuddle Let me ask you a question: If the "restrainer" mentioned in 2 Thess. 2:7 isn't referring to the Holy Spirit, then who else could this be referring to? vrese 7 says this restrainer, restrains lawlessness, and verse 8 mentions the revealing of the "lawless one" whom the Lord Jesus shall slay with the breath of his mouth. I personally don't see anyone else besides the Holy Spirit who could possibly restrain this lawless one, also called the man of sin in verse 3, whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, verse 9. No one but God has that sort of power to retrain this man of sin. Blessings NC |

Hi Cuddle I read the post you directed me to which was composed by Pastor John Moran. I agree with that post from him. here is something he stated in his post which I believe is important: 1) "The nature of the restraint must be supernatural." and"Both of these facts indicate that the restrainer could not be a human being." Like me, John Moran believes in the supernatural, non-human nature of the "restrainer" The only force I believe is powerful enough to restrain such lawlessness is the Holy Spirit. By the way, I don't believe John 14:6 relates to 2 Thess. 2:7 in any way. Blessings NC |

969 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | New Creature | 181024
Cuddle What if the rapture were to come today, and all those believers in whom the Holy Spirit currently indwells were taken out of this world? Would not the restraint of evil be removed from this world at the same time. In that sense the Holy Spirit truly is with us forever. He is with us, but not with the world in such a instance. 2 Thess 2:7 For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way. John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, THAT HE MAY BE WITH YOU FOR EVER, Who does "you" refer to? Believers Right? 2 Th 2:7 For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way. The above verse doesn't say the Holy Spirit will not remain with believers forever. 2 Th 2:7, if it refers to the Holy Spirit, is merely saying that he, the "restrainer" who holds back evil will be taken out of the way of holding back evil. It doesn't say he will be taken away or removed from those who believe. Once again, I don't see what John 14:16 has to do with 2 Th 2:7 Here is another translations wording of 2 Th 2:7 For the secret of this lawlessness is already at work, but only until the person now holding it back gets out of the way. 974 | How to correct ungodly co-workers? | 1 Tim 1:9 | New Creature | 59258
TP I use to have tracts on my work desk. The name of the tract was - "God's last name is not damn" When people would come over to talk to me, they would notice the tract on my desk, and then be more sensitive around me about taking the Lord's name in vain. It worked for me, without having to say a word to them. Who knows. It might work for you. Look in your local Christian book-stores, tract section and see if this tract is available. If you don't find it, ask the owners if they could locate them for you. |

976 | Predestination question? | 1 Tim 2:4 | New Creature | 84484
It truly is God's desire that all men be saved. That statement expresses God's desire or will God has given men a will and a desire to either accept the free offer of salvation provided for by Christ Jesus and His sacrifical death, and atonement. I think Scripture states that people are predestined or are the elect according to the foreknowledge of God who knows what will take place before it actually happens. In other words, God knows beforehand who will and who will not receive the free offer of salvation. It is God's will that none perish, but man's will is not always in line with God's desired will. God's grace and Holy Spirit can be resisted. 1 Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. God is Sovereign, but in His Sovereignty He chooses not to violate man's free will to accept or reject Him. Though He knows the choice before we make it. |

977 | Reconciling 1 Tim 2:4 with Rom 8:29 | 1 Tim 2:4 | New Creature | 96625
1 Tim 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. Branes notes on this verse Who will have all men to be saved. That is, it is in accordance with his nature, his feelings, his desires. The word will cannot be taken here in the absolute sense, denoting a decree like that by which he willed the creation of the world, for then it would certainly be done. But the word is often used to denote a desire, wish, or what is in accordance with the nature of any one. Thus it may be said of God that he "wills" that his creatures may be happy--because it is in accordance with his nature, and because he has made abundant provision for their happiness--though it is not true that he wills it in the sense that he exerts his absolute power to make them happy. God wills that sickness should be relieved, and sorrow mitigated, and that the oppressed should go free, because it is agreeable to his nature; though it is not true that he wills it in the sense that he exerts his absolute power to produce it. A parent wills the welfare of his child. It is in accordance with his nature, his feelings, his desires; and he makes every needful arrangement for it. If the child is not virtuous and happy, it is his own fault. So God wills that all men should be saved. It would be in accordance with his benevolent nature. He has made ample provision for it. He uses all proper means to secure their salvation. He uses no positive means to prevent it, and if they are not saved it will be their own fault. For places in the New Testament where the word here translated "will" (\yelw\) means to desire or wish, Luke 8:20; 23:8; John 16:19; Galatians 4:20; Mark 7:24; 1 Corinthians 7:7; 11:3; 14:5; Matthew 15:28. This passage cannot mean, as many have supposed, that God wills that all kinds of men should be saved, or that some sinners of every rank and class may be saved, because (1.) the natural and obvious interpretation of the language is opposed to such a sense. The language expresses the desire that "all men" should be saved, and we should not depart from the obvious sense of a passage unless necessity requires it. (2.) Prayer and thanksgiving 1 Timothy 2:1 are directed to be offered, not for some of all ranks and conditions, but for all mankind. No exception is made, and no direction is given that we should exclude any of the race from the expressions of our sympathy, and from an interest in our supplications. The reason given here for that prayer is, that God desires that all men should be saved. But how could this be a reason for praying for all, if it means that God desired only the salvation of some of all ranks? (3.) In 1 Timothy 2:5,6, the apostle gives reasons showing that God wished the salvation of all men, and those reasons are such as to prove that the language here is to be taken in the most unlimited sense. Those reasons are, (a) that there is one God over all, and one Mediator between God and men--showing that God is the Father of all, and has the same interest in all; and (b) that Christ gave himself a ransom for all--showing that God desired their salvation. This verse proves (1.) that salvation is provided for all --for if God wished all men to be saved, he would undoubtedly make provision for their salvation; and if he had not made such provision, it could not be said that he desired their salvation, since no one can doubt that he has power to provide for the salvation of all; (2.) that salvation should be offered to all men--for if God desires it, it is right for his ministers to announce that desire, and if he desires it, it is not proper for them to announce anything contrary to this; (3.) that men are to blame if they are not saved. If God did not wish their salvation, and if he had made no provision for it, they could not be to blame if they rejected the gospel. If God wishes it, and has made provision for it, and they are not saved, the sin must be their own--and it is a great sin, for there is no greater crime which a man can commit than to destroy his own soul, and to make himself the eternal enemy of his Maker. And to come unto the knowledge of the truth. The truth which God has revealed: the "truth as it is in Jesus." See Barnes "Ephesians 4:21". (b) "Who will have" John 3:15,16; 2 Peter 3:9 God Bless you NC |

978 | Who are these removed branches? | 1 Tim 3:6 | New Creature | 92588
Dear justme; You asked - "In John 15 verses 2 and 6, is Jesus refering to nonchristians or Christians?" I think the answer to that can be found in John 15:5 where it says - "ye are the branches" the pronoun "ye" is referring to believers John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. John 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. John 15:3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. John 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. John 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. ----------------------------------------------- Below is the comments on John 15:6 from Adam Clarkes Abridged Commentary on the Bible. "Our Lord in the plainest manner intimates that a person may as truly be united to Him as the branch is to the tree that produces it, and yet be afterwards cut off and cast into the fire, because he has not brought forth fruit to the glory of His God. No man can cut off a branch from a tree to which that branch was never united; it is absurd, and contrary to the letter and spirit of the metaphor, to talk of being "seemingly" in Christ - because this means nothing. If there was only a seeming union there could be only a seeming excision. So the matter is just where it began; nothing is done on either side, and nothing said to any purpose. He is cast forth. Observe that person who abides not in Christ in a believing, loving, obedient spirit, (1) is cut off from Jesus, having no longer any right or title to Him or to His salvation. (2) He is withered - deprived of all the influences of God's grace and Spirit. (3) He is gathered - becomes (through the judgment of God) again united with backsliders like himself and other workers of iniquity. And being abandoned to his own heart and Satan, he (4) is cast into the fire - separated from God's people, from God himself, and from the glory of His power. And (5) he is burned - is eternally tormented with the devil and his angels, and with all those who have lived and died in their iniquity. ------------------------------------- If any one abide not in me - By living faith; not by Church communion only. He may thus abide in Christ, and be withered all the time, and cast into the fire at last. He is cast out - Of the vineyard, the invisible Church. Therefore he was in it once. Greetings Ken "The Bible is a supernatural book and can be understood only by supernatural aid." A.W. Tozer The Holy Spirit is the best aid one can rely upon when doing any Bible study. To prayerfully ask for the Holy Spirit to guide and lead us in our personal time spent with God in His word is of utmost importance. The word does not say; “no man knows the things of God except the man who studies the Bible.” It does say; that no man knows the things of God except by the Holy Ghost. John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things. Any attempt to properly interpret Scripture without reliance upon the Holy Spirit's leading is bound to produce faulty interpretations. Trusting in the Holy Spirit is better than any method we could posibly produce Shalom New creature |
