G Preston you wrote on 10-21-12: "Eternal life is not received until AFTER death. The act of suicide is before death. See St.Luke 9-62....et al. This applies as well to the question of..."once saved always saved". We must not confuse preparation/qualifying/eligibility for eternal life with receiving eternal life." end of post dated 10-21-12 I must disagree with your understanding of the scriptures. The bible teaches that at the moment one believes in Christ they HAVE eternal life, and yes, in this life time. John 5:24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, HAS eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life." Read carefully what is written "..he..who believes...HAS eternal life.." it does not say "will have" as suggesting some future time. I think you're confusing the definition of eternal life as if it were connected with time. This then begs the question, "what is the definition of eternal life?" John 17:3 This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. Eternal life is a relationship with the God of the universe beginning at conversion...in this life time. Read carefully at what is written, particularly in John 3:36, when I posted previously dated 5-25-12: My heart goes out to your friend. In reading your posts you ask earlier if a child of God (saved individual) commits suicide, would he/she go to heaven (my paraphrase of your question) . Consider the following three verses: John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life..." NASB Notice - A believer has "eternal life" Romans 3:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus" Notice - eternal life is a "gift of God" Romans 11:29 "for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." Notice - the gifts...of God are "irrevocable" Conclusion: Once a person has eternal life nothing can reverse that gift, a christian committing suicide will still have still have eternal life with God. I hope this helps? end of previous post dated 5-28-12 My conclusion remains: Eternal life begins at the moment of conversion. Please, though, understand my disagreement with you is given in a spirit of love. Mikep |

I believe the real question is, "Can a Christian commit suicide?" As defined suicide is an act of hopelessness. Can one that truly believes in Christ be without hope? If so where did their hope go, Jesus promised never to leave us nor forsake us. |

Edp, Remember the Bible says we will not be be confronted with more than we can handle. It doesn't say Christians will not be challenged...in fact it says the opposite. Witness.... Job. G-d did not forsake Job. G-d allowed Job to be tribulated. A change in mental capacity producing suicide and it's effect on ones eternal salvation is G-ds to know. But, common sense tells me that G-d would not allow a mental condition...involuntarly induced...causing suicide...to impair eternal salvation. |

G Preston I don't believe Christians will not be challenged and I believe like Job we will have hard choices to make whether to lose all hope and give up or to serve God. Remember even job's wife suggested that Job curse God and die. I think this is talking of suicide. Look at Joseph, who had more reason to commit suicide, his very life threatened by his brothers, who then sold him into slavery, then he was lied about and thrown in prison, after a time he was given a glimmer of hope by the wine server and baker who forgot about him. Suffering 15 years of hopeless imprisonment all for something he never did. The point I'm making is if we have made Jesus Lord of our life we have hope. Jesus promised never to leave us, so if we find ourselves without hope that means that Jesus was never truly and fully Lord of our lives. Our "salvation" was nothing more than lip service that we hoped would buy us a ticket to heaven. We never fully yielded our will and being to Jesus. Scripture says we must die to the flesh and become new creations. What many want to do is to be able to call on Jesus in times of need but determine their own course on everything else. They never really had the hope that comes from making Jesus totally and fully Lord of their lives |
