I've met a man in an on-line debate who says he rejects the bible because according to the bible the earth is flat. He claims there are no references in the bible to the earth's shape as being that of a sphere, but only a circle. For instance, Isaiha 40:22 reads "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in." Anyone? I've exhausted my resources on my own. Has anyone here run into this argument with atheists before? There are many readers looking for my answer. If anyone's got one, please let me know asap. Thanks! RoS |

Hi, RoS! Remember when gay meant happy? Remember when scientist thought that the universe was so old that it was folding upon itself? Remember the claim of certain scientist about the sun dying out in x millions of years? Remember the proverbial chicken--egg (ditto for the hundreds of thousands of species on earth)? There are many people that will question your faith. Do not get caught up in the excitement of the moment--simply arguing to make a point on earthly terms will get you nowhere! God Bless! |

Thanks JCrighton. I appreciate your point and agree that men aren't won into the kingdom by arguments. But I am confident that the Word of God is perfect and defendable. I have met a forum full of people who don't believe that it is; they believe instead that the bible is full of holes, and that they'd be foolish to trust it. And therefore, that they'd be foolish to trust its author. I've met its Author and He is not foolish, nor does He make mistakes. (Men who translate it have, however) And I think these people have every right to question its authority before they trust it. If the authority of the bible is in doubt, and they require its soundness before making a decision for Christ, then I feel it is our duty to defend it. If I see the discussion going nowhere, though, as they sometimes will... then it is a waste of time and I retreat. For now, they seem to have geniune questions. And I am grateful to find men of God on this web site who have studied to find biblical answers for them. I thank you for them all. God bless you, RoS |

Hi, RoS! You are correct in being assertive about engaging debates on the Word. We are called to be ready to answer about our belief in Christ Jesus. You make an excellent point about the translators choosing in error the wrong word, or putting emphasis on the wrong meaning. We must also understand that the Bible is not a historical book, full of dates, names, and chronicles. Also, we must take into consideration the people (customs and languages) and the period for which the various books were written (as direct recipients). Sadly, most of the non-believers, as well as some who profess to believe, think that they can deminish the Truth be applying mothern logic and rhetoric to what they perceive to be errors or gaps in the Bible. This is not to say that we should live in a vacuum: How then are they to call on him if they have not come to believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard of him? And how will they hear of him unless there is a preacher for them? And how will there be preachers if they are not sent? As scripture says: How beautiful are the feet of the messenger of good news. (Romans 10:14-15) God Bless! |
