Well g3ills since you have had time to do some research has any of your views of what the Bible is changed? Why do Jews call the Bible the TaNaK? Hint:(What do Torah, Neviim and Kethuvim mean?) What is the JEDP theory? What is the Septuagint and what does it have to do with Christians dividing the Old Testament into 4 types of writings? Though Protestants and Catholics divide the Old Testament the same way Protestants accept the same books as the Jews. What do Protestants call these books (and portions) they reject from the canon and what do Roman Catholics call these books (a portions) that they include? Could any of the Old Testament books be reclassified as some type of mashal? What is the classification for the first three Gospels that John does not fall into? What is the classification for the writings that were written first? Who is accepted as the author of the only Historical book in the New Testament? Name a book that was not accepted into the New Testament? Could any of the New Testament books be reclassified as plays? |

No Drake, nothing can change my view of the Bible, but I cannot answer alot of questions concerning scriptures as I would like. I have copied the questions that you asked, that I may find the answers and expand my understanding. (which is not all that great, I am learning). The only question that I can answer is the classification for the first three Gospels that John does not fall into...which would be the synoptic gospels, which means "to see the whole together", so called because of their simularity. This is my reason for trying to learn how to research. When I look at the answers of quite a few of you on the forum, I no doubt fit in at the bottom of the pole. But I want to learn, that is why I appreciate you seasoned saints. I will get back with you on the answers of the other questions. G.

g3ills - The questions you didn't know the answer to are academic, pedantic, donnish. Don't worry if you don't know the answer to but one of them -- or to none of them for that matter. You can easily live a godly life and study God's word from now till the day you go to glory without knowing the answers to these questions and be none the worse for it. ....... I'll illustrate my view of the truly important thing in the Christian's life by telling you a little story. ..... A country church hired a new pastor fresh out of seminary and on the occasion of his first sermon, an old farmer was selected to give his testimony, which preceded the new pastor's sermon. The old farmer faced the congregation and tried to quote the 23rd Psalm from memory, but he got it all mixed up, forgot a few words and mispronounced others. He finally gave up and, in his own words, gave a humble testimony of what the Lord had done in his life. After he sat down, the new pastor came to the pulpit and announced, "Now I want to recite the 23rd Psalm the way it should be recited," and proceeded to give a flawless performance. After the service the retiring pastor whose pulpit the new pastor was assuming, approached him and said, "Young man, that was as splendid a recitation of the 23rd Psalm as I've ever heard in my life. It certainly shows you know the Psalm. But, you see, the old farmer, well, he showed that he knows the Shepherd." --Hank

Hank - He did say it was a class question and he was doing research. If he is writing a research paper then the questions seem appropriate.

Michael Draves - The original question was, "What type of book is the Bible, and how do I go about researching this question out?" ...... I said your questions to this user were academic, pedantic, donnish -- and they are. I never addressed the appropriateness of the questions, Michael. They may be appropriate for a student in seminary, if that's what g3ill is. Perhaps the user would be willing to enlighten both of us. I do trust that you see no real need to defend your questions. People of inquiring minds may find them fascinating. And you don't expect me to follow up that statement by admitting I don't. :-) --Hank

No, I am not in seminary or nothing like that. I am a 46 year old man that is not very well educated. I was 38 years old before I realized that I was not dumb. So now I am trying to learn without the help of the grades 1-12. So I missed alot. I take classes like precept on precept (Kay Author ministries) with a local bible teacher. I am a person who still longs for what I missed growing up from my dad, but I realize that it will never happen because grown people think that something is wrong with an man my age trying to follow too closely to learn Christ. So this is my way to run with the horses, and learn. I do not call myself chalenging anyone's view, rather I welcome them. I do however stand on the scriptures as the only living book, my love letter from God. G

Have you ever heard the story of John Brown of Haddington? He was an orphan in the 1700s who taught himself Greek. http://faculty.bbc.edu/RDecker/roberts9.htm |
