Dead EdB, Thanks for your reply. Jesus told Mary that He has not "YET" ascended to heaven. Can it mean Jesus went to Hell first to defeat satan which was one of His primary missions in earth. kindly can you comment on it. Can you please tell me the passage where Abraham's bosom is mentioned in The Bible. Sorry for asking you questions becuase it is out of my curiosity. |

As far as I know this is the only place in the Bible Luke 16:22 "Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23 "In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. Apparently, the Jews thought of this phrase, "Abraham's bosom" as being their idea of Heaven or the ideal place after life on earth. Jesus saw how much emphasis they placed on Abraham. By the way I found this quite easily by inserting those two words into the Word Search at the right of your screen. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

Rowdy I explained this to foursquare but in case you don't see it I will repeat it here. the picture Jesus paints in Luke 16:19-31 of Hades and the hot dry place and Abraham Bosom was the exact concept of death and Hades the Jews already believed. It is not certain where this concept was developed but from Jewish writing and literature. If you asked any Jew where he would go upon death his answer would be to Abraham bosom to await the Messiah if he considered himself righteous and of the unrighteous he would say to the a hot dry place awaiting judgement. Remember the Jew believed in the resurrection in judgement before Jesus. Here in Luke we see Jesus telling this story and repeats the Jewish concept of the afterlife. For Jesus to do this one of two things have to be true. It is falsehood and Jesus was deceiving His listener’s. Or the concept is correct and by using it Jesus was taking something familiar and explaining it further to His listeners. I think we will both agree the later seems more plausible than the former. We know Jesus descended into hell and he know he lead captivity captive Eph 4:8. In Peter it tells us Jesus preached to those in Hell. 1 Peter 3:19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, What took place is those in Abraham’s bosom were the saints that died looking for their redemption by the Messiah. Jesus upon his death went there (also known as paradise) and preached the “Good News” He then lead his followers to heaven. Today when we died in Christ we are told to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. 2 Cor. 5:8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. Therefore the story of Luke 16 is no mystery to the listener’s it was as they had been taught and Jesus was using this truth to convey the need for righteous living and as a prophecy as to what was going to happen very shortly in the future. I have to agree with almost everything you've said here, all but the point about Jesus' visit to Hell/Hades. Although Peter is pretty clear about Jesus' going there, it's not quite so clear what exactly He preached to them or the end result therefrom. Cited for reference: 1 Pet 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, 19by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. Thanks be to God, this is not a point that's critical for agreement to be pleasing to God, thus we can agree to disagree. There's so many good scholars on this Forum, I feel dwarfed. God bless you, dear friend. --Rowdy |
