1 | Book of Life "will never be altered." | Rev 3:5 | kalos | 6975 | ||
God's pencil has no eraser. Rev 3:5 "Book of Life." A divine journal records the names of all those whom God has chosen to save and who, therefore, are to possess eternal life ( Rev 13:8; 17:8; 20:12, 15; 21:27,: 22:19; compare Dan 12:1; Luke 10:20). Under no circumstances will He erase those names . . . , as city officials often did of undesirable people on their roles. (MacArthur Study Bible, p. 1996) Phil 4:3. "Book of Life." In eternity past, God registered all the names of His elect in that book which identifies those inheritors of eternal life . . . (MacArthur Study Bible, p. 1828). When were our names written in the book of life? "From the foundation of the world." Before the first man was ever born, the names of the elect were written in the book of life. Rev 17:8 NASB "The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss and go to destruction. And those who dwell on the earth, whose name has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will wonder when they see the beast, that he was and is not and will come." Rev 13:8 (NASB) All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. "Lamb slain". The Lord Jesus who died to purchase the salvation of those whom God had chosen was fulfilling an eternal plan. "from the foundation of the world". According to God's eternal, electing purpose before creation, the death of Christ seals the redemption of the elect forever (compare Acts 2:23; 4:27, 28). Antichrist can never take away the salvation of the elect. The eternal registry of the elect will never be altered, nor will the saved in the Antichrist's day worship him. Greetings Kalos, the way I see Rev. 13:8 is in agreement with your view and that being that only the names of believers; however as to when they were written in the book may leave much dispute depending on the translation used. Rev. 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Rev. 13:8 And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. Someone made reference to ones name being omitted in Rev. 22:19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book. There again it doesn’t actually say name but his part, which could tie in with another verse. 1 Cor. 3:15 If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire. In essence what it is conveying to me is that the individual in question will be saved, he just won’t have anything to go along with it. Kind of like everybody standing around in nice white robes and he will be standing there in his B.V.D.s (God shall take away his part) This wouldn’t even be necessary if he wasn’t there in the first place. What got him there, as with all, was believing in Jesus Christ, God’s Son, not something he did with reference to God’s written Word, by changing or omitting. Just because the thesis is true in a verse does not necessarily mean that the antithesis is true as well. Rev. 3:5 'He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels. |

Greetings CDBJ! You made a very interesting point about Rev. 13:8. I hadn't noticed that before. I found out that either translation is grammatically possible, but I would cast my vote with your first selection and say that 'from the foundation' refers to the death of Christ. Here is why: First of all, the clause literally reads as follows: "He who not has been written the name of him in the book of the life of the Lamb who has been slain from foundation of world." While the phrase 'from foundation of world' could grammatically be associated with 'has been written', it is closer to another verbal idea - 'who has been slain'. Wait, can I change my mind? The phrase may go better with 'has been written'. Here's why! 1) Rev. 17:8 uses the phrase 'written from the foundation of the world'. If it had not been for Rev. 17:8, I would have said that the phrase 'from the foundation of the world' refered to Christ's death. After all, it is used in this sense in 1 Peter 1:20. However, the phrase is also used of believers in Eph. 1:4. And, Rev. 17:8 definitely indicates that the names are written or not from the foundation of the world. Whether or not they can be removed is a different question! :-) But, I'm not going to go there! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim, smart move on your part, Whether or not they can be removed is a different question! :-(But, I'm not going to go there! :-), Once bitten, twice shy. Here are the different translations that I have on the same verse, take your pick. Rev. 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Rev. 13:8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world. Rev. 13:8 And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. Rev. 13:8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. Rev. 13:8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Rev. 13:8 And all the people who belong to this world worshiped the beast. They are the ones whose names were not written in the Book of Life, which belongs to the Lamb who was killed before the world was made. Rev. 13:8 Everyone living on earth will worship it, everyone whose name is not written in the Book of Life. That book belongs to the lamb who was slaughtered before the creation of the world. Rev. 13:8 And all that dwell on the earth shall worship him, every one whose name hath not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that hath been slain. Rev. 13:8 and all that dwell on the earth shall do it homage, [every one] whose name had not been written from [the] founding of [the] world in the book of life of the slain Lamb. Rev. 13:8 And bow before it shall all who are dwelling upon the land, whose names have not been written in the scroll of the life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world; Even a little for the Spanish-speaking brother and sisters. Rev. 13:8 Y la adorarán todos los que moran en la tierra, cuyos nombres no han sido escritos, desde la fundación del mundo, en el libro de la vida del Cordero que fue inmolado. It is probably a mute point seeing as how the main concern is being in there in the first place and those that aren’t wouldn’t have a clue about what we are talking about anyway. CDBJ |
