Hi 561joshua01 Just an addition to bbskypilot, since he posted his while I was writing mine, (thanks, bb) I come up with the following: To start in context of Scripture, I will quote chapter and verse, Beginning in Rev 3:14, "To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God, says this: (15)'I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. (16)'So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth. (17) 'Because you say, "I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing," and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, (18) I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. (19) 'Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent. I read this as Jesus, seeing that although we think we are "all that and a bag of chips", He is trying to help us to see that we are faulty in our vision, because we do not know that by the standards of God's Kingdom, we truly are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. (speaking in spiritual terms). Yet he loves us and wants to give us an exit from our sin. Therefore we are to come to our senses and quit trying to be "fence sitters" who are neither willing to get on one side or the other. Joyful Blessings, John |

John- good addition brother, thanks. Let's keep going. Jesus does want to give us an exit from our sin and Scripture promises that God will always provide an escape from temptation (1Cor. 10:13). The luke-warm person might be better understood in light of Matthew 6:24, Luke 16:13. One foot in, one foot out. Doing the hockey pockey and turning oneself about in the pursuit of wealth, prestige and self-sufficiency while going through the motions of playing church. God bless, Jeff |

Hi Jeff and thanks, your compliment meant a lot to me. Sorry for this late post, but I stumbled across this site with commentary from John F. Walvoord (entered eternal grace in 2002), a long-time president of Dallas Theological Seminary. Here is a portion: It is apparent that there is something about the intermediate state of being lukewarm that is utterly obnoxious to God. Far more hopeful is the state of one who has been untouched by the gospel and makes no pretense of putting his trust in Christ than the one who makes some profession but by his life illustrates that he has not really honored the Christ whose gospel he has heard and professed. There is no one farther from the truth in Christ than die one who makes an idle profession without real faith. The church at Laodicea constitutes a sad picture of much of the professing church in the world throughout the history of the Christian era and serves as an illustration of those who participate in the outer religious worship without the inner reality. How many have outwardly conformed to requirements of the church without a true state of being born again into the family of God? How many church members are far from God yet by their membership in the professing church have satisfied their own hearts and have been lulled into a sense of false security? The above can be found here: http://www.walvoord.com/page.php?page_id(EQUAL SIGN)261 Joyful Blessings, John |
