1 | Why did Jesus Go to Hell | 1 Pet 3:19 | Emmaus | 109400
Spikebogwan, I hope this is of some help in answering your question "Christ Descended into Hell The frequent New Testament affirmations that Jesus was "raised from the dead" presuppose that the crucified one sojourned in the realm of the dead prior to his resurrection.[477] This was the first meaning given in the apostolic preaching to Christ's descent into hell: that Jesus, like all men, experienced death and in his soul joined the others in the realm of the dead. But he descended there as Saviour, proclaiming the Good News to the spirits imprisoned there.[478] Scripture calls the abode of the dead, to which the dead Christ went down, "hell" - Sheol in Hebrew or Hades in Greek - because those who are there are deprived of the vision of God.[479] Such is the case for all the dead, whether evil or righteous, while they await the Redeemer: which does not mean that their lot is identical, as Jesus shows through the parable of the poor man Lazarus who was received into "Abraham's bosom":[480] "It is precisely these holy souls, who awaited their Saviour in Abraham's bosom, whom Christ the Lord delivered when he descended into hell."[481] Jesus did not descend into hell to deliver the damned, nor to destroy the hell of damnation, but to free the just who had gone before him.[482] "The gospel was preached even to the dead."[483] The descent into hell brings the Gospel message of salvation to complete fulfilment. This is the last phase of Jesus' messianic mission, a phase which is condensed in time but vast in its real significance: the spread of Christ's redemptive work to all men of all times and all places, for all who are saved have been made sharers in the redemption. Christ went down into the depths of death so that "the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live."[484] Jesus, "the Author of life", by dying destroyed "him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and [delivered] all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage."[485] Henceforth the risen Christ holds "the keys of Death and Hades", so that "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth."[486] Today a great silence reigns on earth, a great silence and a great stillness. A great silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. . . He has gone to search for Adam, our first father, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow Adam in his bonds and Eve, captive with him - He who is both their God and the son of Eve. . . "I am your God, who for your sake have become your son. . . I order you, O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be a prisoner in hell. Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead."[487] IN BRIEF By the expression "He descended into hell", the Apostles' Creed confesses that Jesus did really die and through his death for us conquered death and the devil "who has the power of death" (Heb 2:14). In his human soul united to his divine person, the dead Christ went down to the realm of the dead. He opened heaven's gates for the just who had gone before him." notes 477 Acts 3:15; Rom 8:11; I Cor 15:20; cf. Heb 13:20. 478 Cf. I Pt 3:18-19. 479 Cf. 2 | Why did Jesus Go to Hell | 1 Pet 3:19 | Searcher56 | 109418
Emmaus what do you do with Luke 23:46 ... His Spirit went to His Father.
3 | Why did Jesus Go to Hell | 1 Pet 3:19 | Emmaus | 109419
Searcher, First I note that Luke 23:46 says "Into your our hands I commit my spirit." It does not say "He went to heaven.", nor does it say exactly where his spirit went. Is not God omnipresent? How do you deal with all the other passages cited and with the ones below? Ps 16:10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. Ps 18:5 The cords of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. Ps 30:3 O LORD, You have brought up my soul from Sheol; You have kept me alive, that I would not go down to the pit. Ps 31:17 Let me not be put to shame, O LORD, for I call upon You; Let the wicked be put to shame, let them be silent in Sheol. Ps 49:14 As sheep they are appointed for Sheol; Death shall be their shepherd; And the upright shall rule over them in the morning, And their form shall be for Sheol to consume So that they have no habitation. Ps 49:15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, For He will receive me. Selah. Ps 55:15 Let death come deceitfully upon them; Let them go down alive to Sheol, For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst. Ps 86:13 For Your lovingkindness toward me is great, And You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol. Ps 88:3 For my soul has had enough troubles, And my life has drawn near to Sheol. Ps 89:48 What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah. Ps 116:3 The cords of death encompassed me And the terrors of Sheol came upon me; I found distress and sorrow. Ps 139:8 If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. Emmaus |

Matt 5:16, 48; 6:1, 9; 7:11, 21; 10:32-33; Mark 11:25 ... Where is the Father? Is not God omnipresent ... cite Scripure. Do the verses you cited say it is Christ? |

5 | Why did Jesus Go to Hell | 1 Pet 3:19 | Emmaus | 109461
Searcher, "Where is the Father?" I presume you want the answer "Our Father who art in Heaven." But Acts 17:28 also says "In him we live and move and have our being." And Psalm 139:8 says "If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there." "Is not God omnipresent ... cite Scritpure." See above citations." "Do the verses you cited say it is Christ?" Acts 2:25-27; 13:34 cites Psalm 16:9-10 in reference to Jesus and even says that it refers to Jesus, not David. Of course if you do not accept "sleep" as a euphemism for death as it is often used and if you do not believe that being raised from the dead is the same as being raised from among the dead but merely means being raised from the tomb, then we should end our discussion now having agreed to disagree.
