1 | What To Shut Your Mind Against | 2 Tim 2:23 | Morant61 | 169864 | ||
Greetings Kalos! Each of the passages you cited concern false teachers and the appropriate response to them. For instance, Titus 3:9-11 says, " But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. 10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. 11 You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned. " None of these passages indicate that it is inappropriate to engage in studies of doctrine or to engage in detailed discussions about a Bible passage. If it is, then what is the forum here for anyway? ;-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim: I agree with you that: "None of these passages indicate that it is inappropriate to engage in studies of doctrine or to engage in detailed discussions about a Bible passage." As long as they don't go beyond mere studies and discussions. As long as they don't degenerate into something else. Indeed, what is the forum here for? Sometimes I wonder. Discussion (such as we are having now) is one thing. Quarreling is another thing altogether. Answering questions is one thing. Long drawn-out debates -- which OFTEN result in quarrels, verbal abuse, ad hominem attacks, and insults -- is another thing entirely. So is it OK to have "stupid and foolish controversies...and dissensions and wrangling" among ourselves, as long as we don't have them with false teachers? Among ourselves is it OK to engage in "trifling (ill-informed, unedifying, stupid) controversies over ignorant questionings," even though we "know that they foster strife and breed quarrels"? Is there no problem if those in the body of Christ have "a morbid fondness for controversy and disputes and strife about words, which result in (produce) envy and jealousy, quarrels and dissension, abuse and insults and slander, and base suspicions"? Such things are A-OK (they edify, and inspire) as long as we keep them all in the family? Grace to you, Kalos |

We are commanded to study, to rightly divide, and to teach God's word. None of these activies are prohibited by these passages. That is all I am saying my friend! I have been a part of this forum for a long time now (almost as long as you, but not quite). It seems to me that every time a good discussion starts, it is condemned as too long, or too controversial, or too something else. Where is the study? Are we to forever be limited to only generic answers to generic questions? How many times can we or must we answer "who was cain's wife"? ;-) I long to be challenged and to grow in my understanding of God's word. Study is hard work and it will not take place in only one or two posts. But, perhaps this forum is simply not the place that I would like it to be. :-( Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim, It occurs to me that some of the historical theological studies have advanced themselves over the course of decades, if not centuries! Why should we grumble over a couple of dozen posts in a row? I do wonder, though, what this forum would be like without any sarcasm, derision, condemnation, ulterior motives and agendas, criticism, and insults. What if every answer was Biblically based, and every subsequent comment was again, Biblically based? What if each of us had as our primary motivation the well-being of each other (including mental and emotional state)? What if the defining characteristic of every post were the sense of love you got from reading it? I wonder that perhaps we could discuss the deepest and most sensitive Biblical matters until reaching a conclusion, without degenerating into the destructive patterns we've seen time and again. And I would like to just put this thought out there, which is the best way to achieve this? By requiring it of others, or by modeling it yourself? Tim, I want you to know I appreciate your posts very much, and I think that you are a very good example that we can all benefit from emulating. And as soon as I have the time to do my preliminary work on Romans 7, I look forward to taking up that discussion with you! (-: Yet more ramblings from, Mark |

Greetings Mark! Thanks for the kind words! I too appreciate your posts and those of many others. Some on this forum have become (at least in my mind) old friends as I have had the opportunity to interact with them over a period of years now. I would list some of them, but I am afraid I would forget someone. :-) I think the answer to being able to discuss things is too not take them personally. The tuth that we are discussing is God's truth, not ours. If we 'know' something and someone else just doesn't seem to get it, simply let God take care of it. ;-) I look forward to doing some 'study' with you in the future my friend, on any topic. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
