1 | Does 1 Tim 5 v 23 contradict this? | 1 Tim 3:2 | Diomede | 159086
I believe the word temperate is from the Greek word nephalios, which means abstaining from alcohol. I had taken this to mean that overseers were not to drink alcohol at all. However in 1 Timothy 5 v 23 Paul tells Timothy to drink a little wine for health reasons. Is this contradictory?

'While alcoholism and drunkenness are surely wrong, drinking a glass of wine is not forbidden... 'For those matters which are liberties, the one who is truly spiritual will be willing to forego them if exercising his liberty is at the expense of another. The knowledge which informs us of a liberty must be subject to the love which puts the interests of our brother before our own. 'I think it is safe to say that many, if not most of us, are of the intellectual Christian stripe, while there are many others who are the “loving Christian” type. We know that our Lord does not want knowledge without love (see Revelation 2:1-7). We know as well that He does not want us to love apart from knowledge (Philippians 1:9; 1 Timothy 1:5). Let us seek to “know God” and to “love Him.” Let us not divorce love and truth. Both are essential, and each contributes to the other.' ____________________ To read more go to: www.bible.org/page.asp?page_idequals795 (In the above web address, in the place where you see the word equals, delete equals and replace it with the equal sign on your computer keyboard.) |

There is a difference between being an alcoholic and a drunkard. You can be an alcoholic and never touch alcohol. And you can be a drunkard (that is a habitual drunk) without having a physical dependence on the substance. So to say that aloholism is wrong is not true. God willingly accepts the worship of alocholics. But he rejects those who have a practice of getting drunk. (1 Cor 6:9, 10) The fact that there is nothing wrong with drinking alcohol in moderation is seen in the fact that Jesus himself turned water into wine during a festival. (John 2:3-9). |
